I'm speechless. There is one of these groups about an hour's drive from my home. My family has eaten in their restaurant (it's one of our favorites) and shopped at their natural food store multiple times. We had no idea. We thought they were akin to Mennonites or Amish or hippies. If we had known all this was going on we would have never gone. I'm sad, but grateful to know the truth now.

It's probably important for the children of the cult to see free people who participate in open society. I know that definitely helped me to get out of the cult I grew up in. As a child who has never seen anything different, it's amazing to see people who are free-minded and in control of their own lives. It helps keep me from getting love-bombed back INTO the cult, knowing that humans are meant to live freely and think for themselves. We are not healthy when we live trapped (even mentally and emotionally) in cult thinking and systems.

@@dramatriangle Have you considered writing a book about your experience, and what is like to see another side after a lifetime of only knowing what you did? Or is it still a shock, add an ongoing acclimation? If you were maltreated I'm so sorry and sick for you. No child deserves to live under that kind of oppression. It is a source of amazement to me when I hear people talk about having the freedom to choose what they want to be and how they want to live, but don't give their own children that option later. Hypocritical of then don't you think? I'm so glad you commented here, it's not every day you come across an ex cult member, though I hesitate to refer to you as such since it wasn't even your choice. Hugs to you.

Hi Andrew - Thank you so much for this interview. My husband and I can totally relate. It wasn’t this group, but a similar one that got our daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. They were befriended by our son-in-law’s boss and ended up going to that “church “. Very slowly, we could see what was happening to them. Because we didn’t go to that church, they were told not to have anything to do with us, and subsequently we couldn’t see the grandchildren. So I started going there just to see what the kids were up against. It was horrific. They were told to buy and use the wooden paddle to discipline the kids. Our granddaughter was only 5 at the time and they had to use the paddle on her and follow the book that the “pastor” wrote on disciplining children. There was a school attached to the “church” and you could only go to the school if you went to that “church” and if you went to that “church”, your kids had to go to that school. If the kids didn’t sit still in school, their legs were tied to the chairs. In each service, they collected money 3 times and were told to give everything they had. We didn’t get caught up in it - but could see what was happening. And we kept hearing that they weren’t a cult! After a lot of prayer on our part, they finally got out. Now there is an ongoing investigation regarding sexual abuse and physical abuse in the school from years ago. The leader/pastor has disappeared and a lot of the leadership from back then are being charged. We’re in a small city in Saskatchewan, Canada 🇨🇦 and no one at the time really knew what was happening. I’m sorry if this sounds disjointed - but whenever I think back on it, I am so thankful that our family is now doing great. There was so much more that happened as well - but I think this is enough for now!! Thanks for letting me tell part of our story.

I think it was very brave of you to keep on going to this "church" in order to not lose your grandchildren (and daughter/son in law). We can tell whne we read this post how much you have gone through. I hope you are emerging from the trauma. You are wonderful parents. I hope everybody is well or getting there now. xxx

@@annepoitrineau5650 Anne - Thanks for your concern. It was very hard for us to go through it - but we made it. I cried a lot of tears for all of them. When they were thinking of leaving there, they told us afterwards that they couldn’t say anything to anyone for fear it would get back to the leadership. But my granddaughter, when she was 7, said to me “Grandma, I saw my new school today and I have a real desk!” Then I knew they were out of that place! I’m glad they left before terrible things happened to the grandkids at school. Former students are now talking in the news about what happened to them - the physical and sexual abuse from the staff. And there are other horror stories as well. I can truly feel for parents whose kids are caught up in something like this. But it happens so easily and quietly. Like Andrew said in the video - they get lovebombed and then are hooked.

Sometimes I feel like the whole world is a cult. I mean politicians want to tell people what they can and can’t eat, what vitamins they can and cannot take, and collect taxes for everything from water to food to living on your own property, telling people what they can do and put on their own property, telling people how to raise their kids including you have to indoctrinate your kids in schools to believe they can choose their own gender and they must follow their government’s moral doctrine not the family’s and so on. If people don’t follow what the government dictates then they are thrown in jail. We are all living in a cult whether we like it or not .

Andrew I was married to a strict fundamentalist Evangelical, his first step was to try to destroy my self confidence. As for ‘informing’ on me to the pastors, that was done to have people pray for ‘my sins’. The underhanded things that he did to destroy me, break me down so that he was the only person who loved me & I could trust. It was horrible. The PTSD from that relationship and the triggers still happen. BTW the Bible calls for submission NOT subjection.

It's obvious that men wrote the Bible as they are so pathetically weak they have fooled women into thinking that we need to submit to them, using God. Interesting that women were supposed to do this no matter how bad, cruel or foolish they and their decisions were. We're supposed to go along with whatever they say.

I spent 8 years in a cult. There was many of the things that Allen described, child abuse, sexual assault and the working of 15-hour days for a meager salary. We were encouraged to inform on each other and that this is what God would want us to do (protecting our brothers and sisters from the wrong path). When I left, I was told I would be raped, get cancer and die terribly. Threatening calls came to the house and the sense of doom was around me all the time. What got me thru was my philosophy, if this was supposed to be heaven then I would rather go to hell. Thank you for your videos.

Wow! That was a very strong and appropriate comment. If this cult is heaven, then I'd rather be in hell. I believe humans create hell on earth. I fail to see how anything could be worse than what we create here on planet earth. Humans are horrible to each other on so many different levels. Humans destroy planet earth and each other, all in the name of religion and greed.

I used to attend work meetings at their cafe in New South Wales. This is just before I found out who they were. The cafe staff had that remote look on their faces. I never saw them engaging in talk with the patrons or each other.

That's interesting! I went to the Yellow Deli in Boulder, Colorado, one of their businesses. The staff talked with patrons a fair bit. I took some of their literature because I was curious to learn more about their beliefs. My waitress saw this and got very excited. She told me to come back and talk with them if I had questions about what I read. And she said I could visit them where they live to ask questions as well.

Being curious, I googled and found an excellent article from a Winnipeg, Manitoba reporter Michael Welch who infiltrated the cult for 6 weeks and his story was picked up by CBC, our Canadian national equivalent to the BBC. His perspective is similar to Tim’s. perhaps you might want to interview him as well? people need to be aware of these organizations so they can make reasoned decisions.

Yup. They're also thought to be responsible for starting the Marshall fire last year in near Boulder, which destroyed thousands of homes.

I know a guy whose family was in one of the worst cults . The trauma is heartbreaking. How is it? Some of the biggest sins are done in these places, and they hide behind religion - and are left alone?

I saw this group at The Winter Festival in Katoomba (NSW Australia) a few years ago. They came across as really hippy and lovey dovey. They were definitely recruiting!!

Just finishing up with my morning Bible time, and began watching this video. As Im listening, a flash thought of memory got me thinking of a pamplet that was given to me when I was at a little park in Spokane,WA traveling through. I looked in my Bible case full of notes and such, sure enough, it is a 12Tribe booklet!! I remember when they gave it to me, and as I thumbed through it, almost every word written in it seemed to be Scripture and or based on The Word, giving me a 'false sense' of it being God directing me to what I had been needing and wanting....to be a part of something good and right, accepted, and belonging to a family. I kindly said, Thank you, I will spend time in prayer about this, and contined my walk. Thank God for the power of prayer!!! I didn't join. Now as I am listening to both you Gentlemen, I think back and see that they seemingly did 'pick me out of the crowd' and zoned in on the obvious 'orphan' expression I carried at that time. Oooh the schemes of the devil!! I truly thank my Lord Jesus for Him equipping His Saints, as like you, to 'shed Light' on this darkness. May The Lord Bless and Keep you, and make His Face shine upon you, and your families, and make your path straight and Greatly Blessed with His Favor!! Shalom Beloved Family of God Most High!!

And that’s not even counting the families in mainstream Christian churches who form cults within their churches. Anyone who is extreme in their religious or political beliefs or who are pushy or even subtle about getting others to jump on board with them are red flags for me. I flatline as I listen to them talk and observe their lifestyle.

I think one big reason why people get sucked in, is if they are going through that searching phase in life. When you are questioning your faith, or having bad self esteem and having someone telling you how amazing they are, all the time. Just a few reasons I can think of.

Personally if I met anyone who was continually telling me I was great I would try to get away from them and avoid them as much as possible afterwards. I’d just find it rather strange and creepy. Then again I find people who repeatedly use your name when they’re speaking to you creepy and fake.

I’m glad Tim’s podcast is making a difference in that the NSW Police searched the Cult’s property and found the bones. Podcasts have made a difference to a couple of other cases I’ve heard of too. They get tips in and public interest which then pushes the police into action. Thanks Andrew for doing this interview with Tim. I’d never heard of this group before. If Tim writes for the Sydney Morning Herald, that would be why. I’m in Queensland and we have different papers. Online the SMH wants a paid subscription. Here’s hoping the Coronial Inquest recommends some arrests and further investigations.

I subscribe to the SMH Online and I don't recall seeing any articles about this group, apart from a recent one about them selling off millions of dollars worth of property. Unfortunately it is legal in NSW for parents or those with parental authority to beat children, so I don't think they can be held to account for that. Religious groups in this state seem to get away with a lot of things that in normal society would violate labour, anti-discrimination or child protection laws.

@@pollyparrot9447 It’s always a state thing. Qld Police recently charged 12 members of a small religious sect for the murder of a young girl. I think she was about 9yrs old and a Type 1 diabetic. Her parents and the group, who don’t believe in medicine either, withheld her insulin injections while they prayed and sang songs over this poor little girl until she died. So at least all the adults there have been charged with her murder. I think the cops having to deal with a senseless, drawn out and religious death of a defenceless child, though stuff you, we’ll take you all down. I hate that these cults can have millions of dollars off the backs of enslaved and indoctrinated members. Let’s hope the word gets out more and people don’t support their businesses. Maybe the cops can get them the American way - tax evasion?

@Jo Jo Wynne it's great they charged them with her murder. Sadly, in America, there are several states which have laws protecting people from murder charges if it was religious beliefs that caused the person's death.

I remember this group from Grateful Dead shows in the eighties, creepy and predatory; obviously a cult. There were many scary stories about them from people who lived near them Vermont.

I saw a piece about them hanging out at music festivals and " helping" people who are too high.

I knew people from that cult, I knew they were weird and they put my hairs up , but they still run an organic plant nursery with a great cafe. A very successful business. I stopped going there after I had interactions with some of them at work and boycotted the nursery and cafe. Now I know what is happening there it explains a lot of the interactions I had with them and why everything felt so off.

It’s easy for a business to be successful when it’s supplied with endless free labor. Paying wages to employees really cuts into profit margins.

Really interesting. I thought they were a German thing because I've heard about them here. They got arrested (at least briefly) because they refused to send their children to school. Germany doesn't really allow homeschooling, there are denominational schools, international schools, Montessori schools etc but you have to send your kid to a state-approved school of some sort and not just keep them at home and teach them whatever to give them a reasonable start in life.

As for getting a new name, i was shocked that the Lutheran’s do this here in Japan. A lutheran missionary I was talking to was all excited about upcoming baptisms her church was having and as the pastor’s wife she was going to get to pick all the new names for the people. I was like “that’s not biblical and i would never join a religion if i had to dishonor my parents by rejecting the name they gifted me with to be renamed by a virtual stranger “. She had to be diplomatic and said nothing so I asked what sort of names was she giving the people and she was selecting western names of “saints “ and people from the Bible. I said even the Bible names are not biblical, the Bible names are really in Hebrew that were changed to English names. This is Japan! English names for a Japanese is as weird as a Japanese name for an Englishman. And in a group society where you can be shunned for being different I feel it is very wrong to take away one’s Japanese name and replace it with an English one. What does that say about the religion? It says God is English and the English are superior to the Japanese. I think the moslims also change people’s names to arabic names. I’m not changing my name for anyone. And I think the God of the Bible represents ALL people not just the English. The irony is the English are not even in the Bible so how twisted is that. I don’t know where the Lutheran’s got this mixed up theology. They are the only Christian group i have heard of that requires a name change to be a Christian.

That is weird! Definitely not a general 'Lutheran' feature. The Lutherans here (Germany) are of the happy-clappy, anything goes variety, pretty much like the church of England, trying to be modern, very hands off.

But there are 2-3 different branches of the Lutheran’s . Maybe only one branch does this i don’t know but it was a major turn off to me. I found it rather cultish to do that.

Love bombing is one of the red flags for a coercive, high control malignant narcissist individual or group.

Blimey there are no end of religious cults. You think you've heard them all and you find out there's another one you weren't aware of. It's the children I feel for. 😢

It’s such a common thread with these coercive high control groups, members appear as gentle hippy types living in happy productive communities yet all this horrific abuse is happening behind closed doors. Once again it proves true that old adage, if it appears too good to be true, it probably is. I’m not victim blaming. I’m an idealistic person myself and I can easily see how I could’ve been an easy mark for these bad operators at various points of vulnerability in my life. I admire those who have the courage to escape and share their stories.

No. I have never heard of 12 Tribes until I watched this video. I've just finished viewing it and am heartbroken. Over the years, probably since the horrible events in Jonestown was revealed, I've educated myself on many different religions. Along with this I educated myself with known cults so that I never end up in one. Personally, I've always felt that within and about my own self, that I couldn't/wouldn't ever get sucked into a cult. I thank God for this type of knowledge. Also for Him not allowing people that are basically like these to ever cross my path. For allowing me to never actually have encounters with cult members. I pray for the innocents that have been brainwashed while in dangerous cults. I pray for the children born into these cults that are having to adjust to the real world. It is all so TRAGIC and it never ceases to astound me when I hear about another truly BAD/EVIL cult. Existent ones that have evolved with time and still continue into present day, and the new/newer cults still being started to appeal to anyone that will listen and take a step into the unknown. People that may be unaware that they are possibly searching for something that is missing from their lives.😢So Very Sad.

I fell into a cult - even though I knew better - when I was in a situation where life on one hand was a struggle. I was out of work, in a questionable relationship (it would just become bad), no money, few friends ... on the other hand, I had some big dreams and plans and there was some potential in front of me of what could happen. Fuse this with an innate love of religion and desire to know the truth ..... and away I went! I thought the cult (i.e. the guru, who was Adi Da Samraj) would save me from the troubles, lift me up, and send me on to a good road! There were some warning signs that I ignored, quite deliberately. Once I became formally accepted suddenly I was criticized and chastised and all the cult behaviors came out. I chose to leave. I knew others who had been chastised and I didn't like what they became - effeminate sad men who looked like they were always hiding in a cave with their guru afraid of the world. NO not everybody will fall for these groups: cults, It comes down to people not being able to handle ' life' alone, and having no genuine self faith, And a strong will , no matter the background ; will always see some of us - who have been in other terrible situations where we had to survive, never fall for any of these fruit loop, dangerous groups. I agree 100 percent. I know he says even the strongest person but if you are vulnerable can get sucked in. I'm too strongminded and stubborn and definitely lazy. It's like the people that get scammed. I have stopped a few friends and my husband from getting scammed. I'm not saying I'm smarter than them I'm just more critical and paranoid about everybody and everything. I know I'm not beat for that crap V

Thank you, Andrew and Tim, for talking about this. It's really shocking. I came across them at a festival in 2012, they made some lovely bread and great pancakes. They gave me a leaflet about their organisation and invited me to visit their community. I did not, thankfully 😮. But Tim is right they do come across as peaceful loving Christian type hippies.

I was raised in a Lutheran church, there is no name changing, if a group of Lutheran missionaries are doing this, it is a different "Luther" they are teaching. That seems to be a very frightening thing for the past decades.

I think the feeling of "being better than" comes in many forms. It is more normally attained through academia, advanced degrees, getting public accolades or awards, For those who seek out spiritual groups, it is just measured on a different scale. We are all, hopelessly human, in a confusing world.

I am so glad that you did this one! I heard about them while hiking the Appalachian Trail. They have a spot in VT called the Yellow Deli and they try to recruit thru hikers. So glad to learn more!

There’s a Yellow Deli in a neighboring town that I ate lunch at one day, what are they called? I assumed they’re Amish.

Fascinating and terrifying. I’m now listening to the podcasts. I am a Christian and am deeply concerned how groups like this distort the Word of God and bring genuine Christianity into disrepute.

I live in Aus. and I've never heard of this cult. Thanks for this report.

I once befriended a man from that cult as he was selling mate in the market . I was completely ignorant of that sect at that time and I was just curious as a farmer to learn more about their agricultural practices. also I love talking to mormons, JW or other bible based religions , just because I find it so interesting how different beliefs use the same book. the man invited us to visit them in their ecovillage but we did not have time.

Mormans and JW are not Bible based religions. In both cases, they have books that they've added that completely change the premise of Jesus/God in the Bible.

​@@steph744Joseph Smith was also a fiction writer, and he added text. I think many people in Mormonism don't realize this and they believe that Jesus was real and apparently they do follow him. So it's confusing to me

I am trying to find grace in my heart for people caught up in these situations. I can't, for the life of me, understand staying in a place that expects you to beat your own children, or even worse, to allow other people to lay hands on them.

This is such a crazy story!! I cannot imagine being in such a situation.

I can't imagine anyone having physical intimacy with a pangolin. They are covered in hard sharp scales.

With regard to the wage claim, when I left this cult, they actually sent me income tax paperwork, and I ended up having to PAY the IRS for the work I did in the cult for the years I was there.

@@susan5998 It could have just been the community I was in at the time. I haven't ever heard of any other ex-member having to pay taxes either. I ended up borrowing money from my family to pay the taxes because I didn't want to face the community in court after leaving the group.

Manipulation is a powerful tool! And I know a lot of the Scientologist’s stayed simply because they were too ashamed to leave, when they found out the truth. Then again you hear quite a bit of them saying they really believed they were helping the world. Then the fear of losing your family. There are so many different reason for, who what, and why. It’s incredibly sad. I know being brought up as a Christian. I felt as if, what harm is there? Until I lost my faith. I had read the Bible several tones, but only by book, by book. I had technically read the whole Bible. But when I lost my faith, I decided to pray every morning, so a daily devotional, and read the Bible. I was reading it in 90 days. And I stuck to it. I felt there was no way there wasn’t a God. I was so confused by the time I ended reading the Bible. And the knowledge I had learned along the way. Like that fact that the letter J didn’t even exist during the time of Jesus! So we aren’t even calling him the right name! And if you are technically going to translate his name to English, it’s Joshua…. Anyway, I know I still had experienced some major supernatural type experiences in my life. So I feel there has to be some type of higher power. And I pray I find that soon… To each his own, as long as you are not harming anyone. Do no harm, spread love, and compassion. Just us as individuals.

I heard about some of the nonsense going on around them when it blew up all over the media here in Germany, but they've been around here for a long time before that. They always had an odd vibe around them (more so than a lot of other groups with a similar outward image), though I could never quite explain why - this podcast puts things well into perspective.

This cult was started in my hometown, so glad to see it covered. Their little restaurants seem great, but they cover horrific things! I refuse to support them.

Why does it matter? "Ask not for whom the bell tolls......." what injures any life, injures the whole ethos of the planet.

Finally listened to Tim Elliott's 'Inside the Tribe' podcast and it's very much worth listening to. 17 episodes.. so a lot of detail. Seems to be getting worse/stricter for the members which is what happens in so many cults.

I grew up in Sydney ( now live in Brisbane) and I’ve never heard of them. Just checked with a cousin in Sydney and she was unaware of this cult as well!!!! I’m so ashamed I didn’t know. I’m spreading the word now though.

As soon as someone said not to talk to my family, I’d be gone!

Well I just googled them and they list specific countries, towns they are in and business that they run Thanks for your research and sharing it I had never heard of this group

This group ran a cafe at a festival I was involved with for many years. Their food was excellent, so it's shocking how poor the diet is for the members, As you say, they always came across as good people though their literature showed they had some weird ideas. Superstrong work ethic- I remember when we had a bushfire scare and they came out in force to help create breaks. I'm not surprised at the no wages though, that's pretty typical of cultish groups. I was in one back in the 70s and worked for many years for nothing, and had nothing when I left.

I was surprised for him to say that about their diet too. Maybe it is because they are vegetarians I think so he feels they need more protein but yeah, they raise their own food.

The food they sell is very good, but that food is not for the cult members. They do not get enough to eat, there are a lot of problems with their diet. It is discussed in detail on the guest's podcast.

@ST ST they aren't vegetarians actually :) but do have problems with protein. They can only eat what they're allowed, so probably get very little meat since it is expensive. The podcast talked about them eating a lot of millet and whatever vegetables they were given. They would also eat raw brussels sprouts, which depletes protein.

@ST ST they do have farms, but they aren't allowed to eat whatever they raise. They live communally, and will be given a ration of food and that's what they have to eat. It's spoken about in depth in the "into the tribe" podcast. These are ex-members saying these things. The reason I said they aren't vegetarians is because an ex-member said she and her husband had to give up being vegetarians when they joined.

Children of ranchers and farmers put in these hours with their parents everyday. Its called hard work and they love it or choose to go another direction when they become adults. They are proud of accomplishments at a early age. Im not one who goes for cults but some seperations need to be made. I left a cult wasnt easy and they made my life hell for several years.

Thank you for educating people who may not have understood about something like why people can be drawn into bad things when they are vulnerable. What I didn’t like hearing you do was, while making a good general point, dwell on women being victims of men, instead of talking about people abused by their partners. That perpetuates a dangerous stereotype, and plays into to lies, disinformation, and misinformation that are so prevalent in stopping men coming forward about their abuse by female partners, and also both women and men abused by their same-sex partners.

I know this cult almost lost my friend to that horrible belief system and cult... Oooooh it's needing to be exposed ..thank you

I am a 70 year old English gma and very sadly I can see how the world is now FULL, absolutely FULL of people with varying mental health conditions. The bigger problem is that most people are either too naive or lacking the knowledge to understand this. People with mental health conditions are now rife throughout society from politicians, big business people and right throughout society. It’s the the biggest change I can see in society since I was young.🇬🇧🤦🏼‍♀️

L. Ron Hubbert stated, if you want to become rich, create a religion. I remember going to the library as a teenager, and who should talk to me, but a girl who was a Hari Krisna cult member handing me their bible trying to get me to join. I thanked her and moved on. She had this glazed over look in her eyes, like you couldn't have a real person discussion with her. It was sad. I also had a friend who was a Mormon who took me to her church, and I sat there listening to their theology which made no sense, she told me that whatever they say would make no sense to me, so pay no attention. I tend to be a spiritual person, not a religious one. You never had to go to a pope, a priest, a rabbi to find God, you need to go straight to Him. It is about personal relationship, not something a cult guru can do for you. Studying, praying, listening to what God messages you is important, then loving people around you or being empathetic and kind is next. I am just happy that I can still seek the bible. I heard there are plans to outlaw the bible, which is scary. A tyranny government typically does not want people worshiping God, they want a world that is atheist or worse, pagan. I pray that people get right with God.

Countering coercive behaviour with the coercion of law . Interesting, where we are headed. Even outside of cults.

I live just down the street from a Yellow Deli and Rakefet's House (their house in town). They are always mistaking me for a college kid and trying to talk to me about their cult but I just tell them that I'm a Pagan and a registered minister and pull out my credentials and they leave pretty quickly. LOL Our whole family saw a report about their child labor practices on the news and the following Halloween my son dissed them to their face for having a "child farm". ( I think he was feeling petty because they were handing out nasty juice instead of candy) But the look on the 12 tribes members face was pretty priceless.

This is so sad. Parts of this reminds me of my childhood. Work, sleep deprivation, emotional, verbal & physical abuse. Also religious abuse being told you'll go to hell for not honering your parents. She wasn't in this cult, but instead on drugs but wow. Praying for all survivors. Jesus is love, this isn't love.

We have one group here in south west part of Washington state. They are opening a Resturant here. It’s crazy.

God, I hate myself and beat myself up for days when I as much as shouted at one of my kids, or even worse lost temper and showed frustration or aggression on my face. I can never understand how you could hit a child so it hurts. Most evil with a wooden stick. My mother beat me with a belt and cooking spoons until they broke. It effed me up forever. I would never do this to an innocent soul.

I lived in Manitou Springs for several years and the 12 tribes have a presence there. They come across as nice hippies at first but damn those people are messed up once you start paying close attention.

They were not only thrown out of Germany - it may be better said that they fled - because them abusing the children, but because homeschooling is illegal in Germany, and they were not wiling to let the children go to an "outsider"-school. After that, some of them went to Autstria, where homeschooling is possible under certain rules. I don't know if they are here still.

I’ve always stayed close to churches that believe and preach that each individual needs a relationship with Jesus Christ to achieve an inner peace. I’ve never worshipped any man or church. But, during the pandemic I became put off by the warning of the tribulation. Coming out of the pulpit. So much so, that one Sunday I questioned why were we passing the basket? If the end of time is upon us?

Sometimes I wonder if people who are very open minded are more susceptible to being sucked into a cult… I’d consider myself very open minded and curious and wanting to meet and get to know and understand all different types of people with different types of beliefs, and I’m also aware that i would need to be careful with things like cults - especially because I’m so intrigued by ‘hippy’ lifestyles - and I wonder if it’s because of that open mindedness that some people are willing to open themselves up to cults unknowingly.

WHY would anyone choose to live like this? Can't even watch this horrific information. GOD!

People don't even known they have been ensnared! Look how many people believe in the Rapture! A doctrine invented by John Nelson Datby in the 1830s, from a misinterpretation in his translation. Mormons plagiarized a novel by Solomon Spaulding and use it as Scripture. The Church of Christ evolved from a camp meeting/revival where people were rolling around barking like dogs. Jehovah's Witnesses have conflated Jesus and Michael and altered their Scripture to fit their doctrines. So many groups that have innovations for which there is no historical or traditional basis. Protestants altering the Bible to conform with Jewish texts of the 800s versus the Septuagint used at the time of Chrsit. As a matter of fact, if you're not some kind of Catholic or Orthodox, he's probably got you too! "My name is Legion."

Andrew, I would love for you to do a piece on Amma the hugging saint of India. I know a woman through I man I dated, who is one of Amma's regional leaders. He was not of that group. I went undercover to one of her hugging events in my city and the things I saw and picked up were disgusting. There has been a lot of scary stories from former members of what goes on in her ashrams in India. Since you have shown no fear in taking on Scientology, it could be a great piece for you.

Yeah we went to a random yellow deli near a gem mine in North Carolina. It just looked cute, they had a cute shop and so we stopped in. The cashier at the shop told us we *must* go try the food at the deli. So we did. We ate the most incredible tasting, simple food like butternut squash soup and grilled cheese with freshly made like fresca type sparkling juice. It was really good. And they told us about how each of their “tribes” have their own farms around the world where they grow all of their own ingredients like the Yerba mate in Argentina and maple syrup in Vermont, etc. each group has its own product they produce or grow for the yellow delis around the world. The people were super nice, almost *too* nice. So anyway, we were going to the gem mine for two days and decided to stop in to the yellow deli for a coffee and breakfast since it was so good the night previous. So this is where it gets weird… they had a little coffee shop upstairs where they serve their homegrown Yerba mate, etc but it wasn’t open yet. However they said oh we’re going to give y’all “special” seating up in the coffee shop even though it’s not open. So they put me and my boyfriend up there and sent a guy to wait on us. Just the two of us. Weird but cool, we guessed. And just to give a little context, we are kind of hippie kids. We dress different, some may say we look homeless at times, but we’re just super chill and like to talk with new people and are just open to a lot. They could tell. So back to the breakfast, he made us really good lattes and we ordered amazing breakfast. But the guy literally stood in front of us *the entire* time we were there. It was a coffee bar so he was literally facing us. And he started giving montana crap about looking at his phone and then pulls out a pamphlet… about how technology is bad. Then come out more pamphlets. Then he starts talking about how lost he was until he found the twelve tribes and yeshua. By this point I was over it and we were trying to humor him because they were so friendly but also we wanted to just enjoy our breakfast. I could tell by now from being there twice, it was mostly men working and the women seemed very oppressed. Like not super happy like the men seemed to be portraying. So he started trying to push us to come to their Friday night gathering. They live on a farm near to the yellow deli. So I had already googled these folks by the time this fellow was getting a little overbearing. Realized it was not as perfect and utopian as they were telling us. By the end of the first visit we were like damn this place seems awesome! We’re in! (Kind of joking, we have a life in our town) By the end of the second visit they managed to freak us right out. Yeah it was clear that this was a cult and we learned a lot online about the child abuse within the tribes. Don’t want any part of that. One of the things I noticed from being in the yellow deli and looking at their website: all of the men basically look the same. So weird. Like I was having a hard time deciphering whether the guy in the restaurant talking to us was the guy in their website at the other yellow deli across the world. Just a little experience I wanted to share. We never went to their Friday night gathering. If you’re ever near a yellow deli I would suggest going for a meal… just don’t get sucked in to the cult! We just have to remember there is child abuse, sexual abuse and murder and crimes that happen in every culture, group around the world. Let’s not act like there aren’t pedos lurking all the way through our government and positions of power around the world… *clears throat* Catholic Church.

No, they are not. Im sorry you got a bad vibe from him. They truly are good, loving people. I drove 5 hours to visit their michigan farm. Unannounced, i stayed the weekend. I took my husband on a second trip to show him where i, and his wealth, will go when he dies. He approved. Problem is, i am ready to leave my wealth and husband and children and grandchildren now. After 35 years of marriage, im ready to live for God, not myself or family.

@@susan5998 I did get a weird vibe- it was a forced kind of “recruitment” feel. Everyone we talked to seemed genuinely happy and friendly. We even went back twice. I’m telling you after the first visit we were both like damn maybe we need to move here. These people are all so happy and the food is just amazingly delicious. But the second visit was when they really targeted us. I think it was because we are hippie kids and we were genuinely interested in their community. They could tell. It just seems like they are always looking pretty hard for new members. But I can’t ignore the reports I’ve heard of the child abuse. And I think when you join with kids, your kids become “the groups” instead of still yours. I get the idea but why is it required? One thing I also noticed is that it was mostly men working at the deli, some women but less. Anyways, it seems like your pretty “traditional” type community in the sense that the men are in charge and women are subservient and less. That’s something that organized religion has put forth to let the men be in charge and own everything. From what we saw, the yellow deli and the twelve tribes are doing just fine financially. But if that’s what you choose to do with your “wealth” then that’s your choice. Just know that you’re giving your money to a group of people who abuse children and own their women. They’re a lot like the Amish in a lot of ways. Look into it, the women in Amish communities tend to get abused really bad and are basically slaves. I’m just saying if you’re enchanted by the people of the twelve tribes, look into both sides of the story. Open your mind and heart to the fact that it may not be all perfect as they present. Don’t have tunnel vision. I am sorry to hear you are in such a bad way mentally. I would suggest not doing anything rash. As to me you sound a little “over it” if I’m putting it lightly. I don’t know your situation but I lost my mom at a young age and it ruined my life from 12-25 where I was so self destructive because she left me. That may not happen with your family but I’m just saying we should let the universe take its course and take us when it’s time. Putting good thoughts out there for you Susan. Stay well ✌🏻

It's well known if you tell your story to a large enough audience that usually stops the death card because it would be So obvious who did it . This really is an effective way if protecting yourself . It doesn't necessarily stop minor annoyances such as. Slanderous articles hate web site about you or PI but when the focus is you and your abusers the law will look at the abuser .

I can only speak for myself but when I was a teenager I was pretty insecure about my identity and purpose in life so I started to become more devout and double down in the conservative Catholic faith I was raised in, it was by listening to sermons posted by a priest who was suspended by the local bishop for his extremism on this site around 2012 and that’s how I ended up in a high demand (possibly cultish) parish community in my college years, it was basically the Mass still done in Latin and mostly ignoring the changes that came after the 1960’s. I no longer blame my younger self for that as teenagers are notorious for being easily influenced under certain conditions and if it wasn’t that parish I probably would’ve joined some other group as I was attracted to spirituality in general. I’ve been mostly listening to podcasts and videos made by former Mormons as part of my spiritual deconstruction but I’ve started listening to testimonies from people who left the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Scientology and this group and everyday I’m grateful my upbringing wasn’t in any of these cults. If anything I think the Twelve Tribes might be one of the few groups that might be more brutal than Scientology and JWs in my opinion and I didn’t that was possible. They all make my former parish look like a liberal Christian community by comparison.
