The Common Sense Farm

Фильм және анимация

‘The Common Sense Farm’ is a documentary short that brings us into the world of the Twelve Tribes, a communal Judeo-Christian religious group often referred to as a cult. Their insulated way of life has led to a fragile relationship with the outside world, sparking controversies, conflicts and misunderstandings on both sides of the fence.

These people seem so sweet and kind, but ultimately this is a cult. I love two miles from one of their compounds, in another 'planned community' if you will. We've had plenty of people mistake us for 12 tribes and I've heard stories from ex members. They are terrified that the sense of 'community' does not exist in the secular world. Many of them have never had their own money or possessions (lots of second generation members) though they began working before they could remember, and 19 is rather old for these kids to marry. I live in a state where 16 is the age of consent for up to four years age difference. Plenty of 16 year olds marrying 17 year olds in there... because their parents decided their spouse around 12-14 years of age. The beatings do not follow normal spanking. Most of us had to be pretty defiant to get spanked, but the kids only need to ask a question. I am actively trying to get people together to help these people escape on their terms, in my community.

@@martintodd7712 Ironic they give up everything...but the obvious question is...who actually gets the possessions and money? Who makes the decisions on spending that money? That's the rub. They based their cult on the Bible, however the Bible was written - and edited over and over - by aristocracy and rulers, involving forgery and fabrication on a large scale. So this cult may assume it is doing it out of some sense of spirituality, but it is based upon one person's perspective of spirituality in that regard, not the individual. Thie entire worldview is based upon the fallacy of circular logic....'the Bible is true because the Bible claims it is true'. As a religion scholar of over 35 years, I should know. I was once going into seminary myself until I found out the Bible is merely just a compilation of myths and legends, (largely based upn astrotheology, sun worship) and not really based on true events in the sense that people often assume. (For example, there is literally ZERO archeological evidence for the Exodus...one of the biggest supposed events in the Bible, with millions of people in the desert for 40 years. Not a single shred of artifacts or signs of such 'wandering habitation' are found in that region from such an event). Just one example out of thousands that show the Bible and its stories are myths and legends and not based upon actual historical events. The same goes for the character 'Jesus Christ' in the Bible. There is not a shred of evidence for such a person. This should also ultimately be obvious in the fact that no historian of his supposed time ever mentioned a Jesus Christ figure of that time period. Not until almost a 100 years go by before 'Roman Catholic' church related historians bring up the name/title of Jesus Christ.

Tom (Tom and Willadeen) was a host at a guest meal in Boston. He said I needed to repent. I told him I'm not disagreeing with you but why? He didn't answer. Later he said it again. I asked "What is your reason?" (cause I knew his only reason was cause I was not living with them and he had asked me How do you love if you are not living in the community and I answered him what he couldn't gainsay -- "By not reacting to the evil things people do, evil is no longer pushing my buttons and I love people by not hating.") He said "Your reason is your God". I told him "God is peaceable and open to reason and satan is the accuser of the brethren. All you do is accuse me but refuse to give a reason". He kicked me out and told me what he must have heard God tell him -- "You can come back when you repent" but God was saying it for him -- Tom could come back to God when Tom comes back to his senses.

I was baptized there many years earlier and had been away for awhile. They hit on me with the accusations when /I was living there. Joshua Brosseau accused me of being disobedient when he asked me to jar peanut butter and I did. I told Joshua "All lies are from the devil". They were going to kick me out then but I told them that David Woodward/Echad taught that the devil does not fly in magically but comes through a brother or sister. Because I based my action on their teaching they didn't kick me out but it was the beginning of the end for me cause they forgave me when /I didn't do anything and they didn't say anything to Joshua that he should apologize. There was some truth in what Joshua said but he delivered it in a confusing manner. Months earlier Gene Sprigs had told me to stop reading the Bible on my own. After a few weeks I figured he must have meant apart from the Holy Spirit so I started reading it again. He saw me and said "I thought I told you.." I said "I stopped reading it without the Holy Spirit. He must have been pissed and said something to Joshua who resented me or whatever. Actually I did have an experience where God spoke to me and I was disobedient before I went there. I've heard people say stuff like some voice or premonition told them to not get on the plane and the plane crashed and stuff. I had a warning like that I ignored and I suffered greatly in my life for it so I'll give Joshua an honorable mention. They also teach that Adam loved Eve and took the forbidden fruit out of love. What ego-prideful jive. Adam used Eve to justify himself and males are no different with females today. Tom put me out at 10 pm in Boston. I slept in my car and was overjoyed that speaking the truth had set me free from them. I don't like the responsibility of making decisions and isn't that one of the big attractions, feelings of relief from life's pressures in exchange for the protection of the community -- institutionalization mistaken for the Holy Spirit.

It'd be fine if their authority was actually the bible. They are led by a spirit, but I can't reckon which one, or what's going on, because some teachings are unbiblical. There are things they do that are good and things that are bad. Denying the Diety of Jesus, and also believing if they fail, God will kill himself is not very biblical. In genesis 15 when God walks through the split animals, Abraham is asleep so it's a vow fully contingent on the Lords ability to fulfill not our ability. Their leader doesn't fulfill the standard God gives for a prophet either, and was rather hypocritical by many accounts, if he really believed God was telling him to institute these rules, he'd probably be good to do them. Lastly, they believe in justification by keeping the law. Paul warns of people in latter times falling from the faith believing that kashrut is necessary etc. They are wonderfully sweet people and I've very much dwellt on whether I'm being called to it, but they are basically are bible critics trying to reconstruct what the autographs said without any of documents necessary let alone the expertise so they allow a spirit to guide them in their interpretation which is a recipe for being misled. The bible was promised to be preserved and the recieved text does a fantastic job of that. If they would come under scriptural authority they'd be great, also though they need to rethink other things too because kicking women and children to the street doesn't seem like it would be pleasing to the God of the Widow and the Orphan. There's a woman on youtube called Jillybeenz who experienced essentially that and I met someone who knew of an elderly lady they kicked out after she had given them all the money she had from her deceased husband, she's retirement age and on the street now. I since saw they didn't allow an elderly man to join, just allowed him to stay, so I don't know if they've wised up to that, which is fantastic if so and shows a good heart to learn from previous mistskes on how to not hurt people, but still a big yikes, I've never met her to verify this story btw. All in all they have a lot of work ahead of them and it probably entails admitting Yoneq wasn't a prophet. It's apparently not enough to have something communal and unspotted by the world, they also have to deny everyone elses experiences with regards to a relationship with God. They believe Jesus is the devil, this thesis of theirs deeply troubles me. I don't find it convincing, because I've seen God has helped people, and the scriptures are more than clear of the Sons Diety. John 8:24 is explicit that if you don' believe he's God you will die in your sins. Their whole eschatology is reliant on the bible especially the last book being true, but then doubt the veracity of the previous ones. We have a supernatural God that loves us, and is more than capable of keeping his promise to protect his word and if you look at the history until the KJV that's clearly what happens. It's even promised in psalm 12:6-7 and if Jesus needed scripture to avoid being led astray by the devil it's the height of either conceit or lunacy to think we don't. They are right though Love covers a multitude of sins and submitting yourself to someone else is part of the process of what saves. I'll admit I cannot reconcile their beliefs with the scripture we are promised, yet I feel very compelled to want to join, and there have been many extremely compelling signs and wonders while I was there, and even while I was away. I wish a more honest conversation was something they were interested in. In my heart I believe, but they are going against scripture and Jermiah warns the heart is wicked.

Hi David, I left. I was not brought up there nor beaten. I did not get into drugs or alcohol. I have much self control. I'm not the only one, a rarity or a minority. Many who grew up there and left got into drugs and theft etc to a greater degree than most unbelievers I know. What is your point? Reacting to a rod in fear is not self control. At best it is man disciplining in the best way he knows. When our eternal uncreated father disciplines me I understand why and it doesn't confuse me. When my earthly father disciplined me one time I understood I had gone too far and I understood he loved me and it hurt him to do it. I think many (most or all?) of the parents in the community don't discipline out of love. When someone loses self control and becomes a threat to themselves or others and is locked in an institution it can be a relief for that person to not have to make decisions etc. They can become institutionalized. I believe most people in the community don't know the difference between the relief of responsibility in institutionalization and the Holy Spirit. What you seem to be doing is idolizing community by romanticizing (exaggerating) about it.

I ALSO THINK THE LIE "TWELVE TRIBES" IS EVIL. I DON'T SEE SPRIGS AS EQUAL TO AN APOSTLE LET ALONE MOSES OR JOSHUA OR JESUS AS THE COMMUNITIES CLAIMS MAKE HIM. I THINK HE LIKES TO SHOCK PEOPLE BECAUSE IT GIVES HIM POWER. I DON'T BELIEVE ITS A BIG DEAL BUT THEIR TEACHING ON THE FIRST DEATH IS OBVIOUSLY FALSE. I THINK THE BIG PROBLEM WITH KABBALA, YOGA, ETC IS THE ARE TRYING TO WORK THEIR WAY UP TO GOD AND THE COMMUNITY PART OF THE COMMUNITY IS THE SAME THING. JESUS SAID TO SIMON "BLESSED ARE YOU FOR FLESH AND BLOOD DID NOT REVEAL THIS TO YOU". SPRIGS ONCE SAID 'A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE IS A DANGEROUS THING. WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL CAUSE WE COULD BECOME THE BIGGEST PHARISEES ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH.' AND FOR THE MOST PART THAT'S WHAT THE COMMUNITY IS BUT NOT MUCH BIGGER THAN ANY OTHER WORK OF THE FLESH. ALL THAT ASIDE I SYMPATHIZE WITH YOUR DESIRE TO SHARE YOUR LIFE WITH OTHER LIKE MINDED BRETHREN. I DON'T CALL THE COMMUNITY LIFESTYLE EVIL AND I'M NOT AGAINST THE COMMUNITY FOR THE SAME REASON MOST OF CHURCHIANITY REJECTS THEM BUT IN HEAVEN AS ON EARTH IS SUBTLE PRIDE AND THAT'S WHAT WE ALL NEED TO BE FREE FROM. ARE YOU FREE FROM THAT DAVID? WHAT STATE ARE YOU WORKING OUT OF -- NEW YORK? DO YOU HAVE A COMMUNITY YET?

You could say the same thing about any culture. If a police raids them and traumatize all the children in the process, then forcibly separates the siblings into different families and changes their names in a hope that they will completely forget who they were, does that seem right to you? To be clear, I am very much against physical punishment and I think children should be raised to be independent and free to make their own choices and It is sad and outrageous to see that they put their children through abuse, believing it's a best way to raise them. But I am also disgusted with our unsustainable way of life where everything is geared towards profit and progress to the point where we are literally killing the whole planet, and I had no choice either. Also, people from different families have different life options, leaving many doomed to poverty; many people do not really have an option over their career paths, and so on.

I wonder what it is that makes them finally realize that what is happening to them is wrong or maybe it is simply at that age they are given a little more freedom so they therefore have the ability to run away than when it would have been harder or even impossible at a younger age due to people keeping watch over them.

JL It's just like education -- if you rebel or conform your buttons are still being pushed by the same external pressure. The ones who leave are the rebellious ones and the ones who conform stay. If you raise a child as is best suited for them they will not depart from it. The community does not do that. They suppress the natural inner G'D given sense of wonder and curiosity and cause rebellion or conformity but like compulsive learning, it dumbs you down as much as rebelling and taking drugs.

If you have children hope you don't mind beating them frequently and consistently until they are black and blue or having others do it. Hypnotists get past your critical thinking before they plant the post hypnotic suggestion. After years of suffering one day you hopefully wake up by the great awakener, pain, and see what you have let go for. These are the kind of teachings they don't let you see until you're cemented in -- “Hephzibah is coming to understand that she is living for her father and belongs to him. The other day she was having great difficulty being obedient to his command: not to suck her thumb in bed. Elbert (Yoneq the apostle of all 12 tribes) asked her to stick out her thumb because he was going to cut it off. He took a huge pair of scissors and came toward her. She was terrified, but (after receiving her discipline) she willingly stuck out her thumb to be cut off rather than let it cause her to stumble in her obedience to her father. Elbert didn’t actually cut it off (how kind of him), but he wants Hephzibah to understand that it is better to have your hand cut off now rather than later. He wants her to be saved.” They try to liken Gene/Yoneq terrorizing a little girl by lying to her about cutting off her thumb to Abraham but Isaac was not terrorized because Abraham said to Isaac “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son” Gene Sprigs ("Yoneq") flipped out on Eddie Wiseman for wearing $45 Clark shoes Michael Painter sold him. Gene made Eddie return them. Michael later found 5 pairs of New Balance $179 a pair hiking boots in Bill Hinchliff’s closet that Gene had Bill get for him. Gene/Yoneq flies around the world dressed in nice clothing while his community members wear worn out clothes and often work 16 hours a day. Did you know that Yoneq is not just their apostle but above the 12 apostles equal to Moses, Joshua or Jesus/Yahshua because Yoneq claims to be the founder of all 12 tribes today. The apostles only represented 1 tribe each. The community does not admit to him being in total control of all the teachings but perhaps that changed now since his short term memory is allegedly going.

Most of my comments on top of what I already wrote three years ago below and posted in addition to that I didn't realize then what I realized now is that the Twelve Tribes didn't rightly divide the word of truth as 2 Timothy chapter 2 says, since what Jesus preached was "Only for the lost tribes of Israel" as Mathew 15 verse 24 shows, as well as Christ telling his deciples not to go to the Gentiles in Mathew 10. Currently we are in another dispensation then what Christ preached according to Ephesians chapter 3 verse 1 thur 5 and by the death of the testator (Jesus) in Hebrews 9 verse 15, this other gospel says we will be judged by Pauls gospel in Romans 2, so the danger is when people don't rightly divide the word they end up taking away some things like the Twelve Tribes that Paul taught by just going to the gospel that Jesus taught, for example Christ said that there's "a Cost to follow him in Luke 33 but in Ephesians 2 Pauls shows its a Free Gift now and many other differences of the two separate gospels. The apostle Peter warned about doing this and 2nd Peter chapter 3 verse 15 through 17 that if you wrest away what Paul taught your lost, this has much to do with not Rightly dividing Gods word to be approved in 2 Timothy 2 verse 15. These despenstions are stated in Hebrews 1 verse 1. This i believe is part of the deceptions in the last days as fortold by Paul that in the last days they will depart from sound doctrine so they will put up for themselves teachers according to their own desires. Watch Robert Breaker on Rightly dividing the word on U tube. Respectfully Martin.

I've had many numerous encounters with these people over many years and I can tell you from personal experience they are very kind, transparent and genuinely decent people who are very dedicated to what they believe.... I encourage anyone who is curious about them to find out for themselves

You are right. They are very kind people. The negative comments on here are from those who believe everything they hear without knowing the full truth.
