A Prelude to The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings - The Watchful Peace ends - Who is Elrond - Tolkien Lore

We continue with the Third Age of Middle-earth and look into the aftermath of 2nd Sauron's return, which ends the Watchful Peace. It has several consequences, some good, most are bad though. We have the attack on Elrond's wife Celebrían, the War of the Dwarves and Dragons and Gondor under Cirion is almost defeated. But there are also the forces to counter Sauron. The White Council is summoned for the first time by Galadriel and Rohan is founded by Eorl.

    @@ThePhilosophersGames The pacing was fine and text on the screen works well for your meatier topics. Your videos are brilliant because I can *listen* to them while doing chores/walking etc and I know I won’t be missing any “key” information as your visuals always follow and back up whatever your audio is discussing (and NOT vice versa). This makes your videos relaxing and enjoyable as I’m not continually worried about missing an important piece of information simply because I’m not glued to my screen. (Also, I’m rewatching the video and viewing the screen; For the text, you adequately cover it with your narrative so it doesn’t disappear “too quickly” and leave anyone confused or having to rewind)

    Celebrian must've thought she would have seen Arwen again someday when she sailed west, so this fact makes Arwen's decision to be mortal that much harder.

  • @reflectiverambling1148

    Thank you so much for another glorious entry! You know, I'm just now kind of thinking there are echos/ripples Down the line between Melian and Luthien and Galadiel, Celebrían , and Arwen but I'm not quite sure where this trend of thought is going. Something about mothers leaving children/those they've mentored at awkward times because of their own weariness, slight parental failures/seeing the results of your choices, and even between Melian and Elrond in the weight that comes with foresight and caution... This is a rather knotted ramble that I'm honestly not sure what I'm trying to get at. But it was brought on by your mention of not Knowing what Galadriel thought of losing her daughter in a way or Celebrian not knowing if she'd ever see Arwen again, as well as Elrond's attempt to heal. I will say that I've always loved how mental trauma isn't just waived off by this. Also thank you so much for weaving in history, timelines, geography, and clarifying some terms (in this case what Easterling could entail) . Top content as always.

    Thank you as as well (for helping out modding the chat). Happy you enjoyed the video. Yes this one had some intense topics and Tolkien really manages to transport them so well in just very few lines and implications, while treating them very plausible and you feel the weight of the trauma. Bzw. do you use discord? I recently created a Chat Mod Role + special Channel on my Discord server for the few chat mods I have. I can imagine you are more than busy with Robert already 😅 And I rudely just "recruited" you in an hour of need 😂 ( discord.gg/SPW68vh ). I never put two and two together, but it might be a parallel that the both the watchful peace and the siege of Angband before the Battle of Sudden Flame both lasted 400 years. I’m sure someone else has pointed this out before but it was an epiphany for me just now

    Even if it would seem like Saruman invented Uruk-hai in the films, there are Uruks (like in the book) in Cirith Ungol, so it doesn't say werever Saruman did invent them or not in the films.

  • @ThePhilosophersGames

    @ThePhilosophersGames

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes I meant it's more an implied thing. I also showed some shots of Mordor Uruk-hai from the films as well. So they are there, but there is not dedicated dialogue for it to dissolve the potential confusion. I know some people believed they were an invention of Saruman, that's why I mentioned it.

    It is said that every time the One Ring was used, it was like a beacon to Sauron. It is also said that Smeagol as Gollum used the Ring many times to help him catch prey in the caves under the Misty Mountains. Wouldn’t the One Ring flashing a few times in one place allow Sauron to somewhat pinpoint the location of the Ring? Gollum obviously used it enough that it changed him drastically. Is this ever brought up elsewhere that I just haven’t read yet?

  • @ThePhilosophersGames

    @ThePhilosophersGames

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's a difficult topic I think. The films are cut in that way, that it seems like Sauron and the Ringwraiths get alerted and know exactly where the One Ring is, if somebody uses it (and there are some hints for that in the books as well), but imo the books are not too conclusive on that. There are only few situations where this is the case and only under very special circumstances Frodo is detected (e.g. on Amon Hen , which is a very special place and in Mount Doom, when Frodo claims the One Ring for himself).

    I shudder to contemplate the likelihood that the orcs probably gave Celebrían something more than a poisoned wound! What was someone of her noble descent doing travelling in the wild so poorly guarded anyway?

  • @ThePhilosophersGames

    @ThePhilosophersGames

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hard to say if she was poorly guarded. We don't know how many Orcs attacked. We have no real information what happened to her, which I'm kind of happy about. Some people assume that she was raped or something, but that is in my opinion extremely unlikely. Tolkien explained in Laws and Customs that Elves were able in extreme situations to "rejected bodily life" and pass "to Mandos". "But among all these evils there is no record of any among the Elves that took another's spouse by force; for this was wholly against their nature, and one so forced would have rejected bodily life and passed to Mandos."

  • @keyboarddancers7751

    @keyboarddancers7751

    It's a tough call. On the one hand, the likes of Sauron, Morgoth, orcs and other evil doers would undoubtedly be no strangers to the most heinous and cruel acts (e.g. the grotesque torture/murders of Gelmir and of Celebrimbor, the regular use of decapitation as punishment or in battle, the depravity of the Kinslayings, the "engineering" of Turin's incestuous relationship with his sister and the application of slavery) and so it would not be surprising for rape to have been as common an occurrence as in any typical pre-industrial societies. On the other hand, despite the vast scope of his legendarium, I just don't think Tolkien was particularly keen on incorporating depictions of or allusions to sexual violence. I think we can probably all agree to quietly acknowledge the Professor's sensitivities in this matter!
