Here is my craziest theory: Sauron took on the form of a Dwarf and presented the rings as gifts from Aule, saying that he was a Maia of Aule, which in fact was true. This way he could go directly to every Dwarf Kingdom and get access and present the gifts to the ruling Kings. This way, the Dwarves would never suspect anything bad of the Rings and would use them as if they were gifts from Aule and continue using them as they actually worked and increased their wealth and craftsmanship. I don't think they knew those rings were Sauron's and meant for evil purposes until after they were directly confronted by him much later.

Dramatically, the Dwarves-Dragon connection was set up as a vicious cycle perpetuated by Sauron through his influence on the rings the Dwarves had. Sauron-Greed-Hordes of Shinies-Dragons. I read this as Sauron making the best of salvaging his plan of dominance. He couldn’t dominate the dwarves, but he could guarantee their destruction by using the dragons, but not directly. He just used the natural proclivities of dragons. To that end, it would be inevitable that, if dragon fire could destroy rings of power (but not the one ring as it was further protected by Sauron’s essence), then some rings would be destroyed by the imprecise instrument of destruction that is a dragon.

I agree. You're completely on-fire at the moment with producing your amazing videos. And at a time when other Tolkien channels are struggling to find unique content, you're giving us in-depth and fascinating content which we don't find anywhere else. If I had a medal to give to one creator in this space, I wouldn't hesitate a second before presenting it to you. It's almost a scandal that your videos don't get 10x more views. But I am sure that's only a matter of time.

Yes always loved to include some map stuff and I'm very lucky to have a nice person in my community that made First Age and Third Age maps with some correction out of the map Amazon published (I think John howe made the original design of it). Pretty nice to use that one (I think all channels use it, but not all channels have a version with a Beleriand map 😄).

Yes the little red arrow is a classic on my channel. You even find it in videos from 2017. I at some point added the black line for place names and use the arrow to highlight spaces or movements. And recently I also added the dotted line, but it's a bit more work intensive to implement. If possible I also try to highlight areas, like Eriador or Angmar in this video, but sometimes it's really hard to find out where the borders of those areas are 😅

We are told by Tolkien that the majority of of the surviving dwarves of Belegost and Nogrod migrated to Khazad-dum early in the Second Age, so it seems likely that three of the Dwarf-rings were located in Khazad-dum up to the time that the dwarves were driven out by Durin's Bane. The Broadbeams and Firebeards might have established mansions in the Grey Mountains and those Rings might have been two of those destroyed by dragons.

Good point, a migration is possible too (I think I also red the quote from Unfinished Tales), but ofc the migration happens far before the Rings were created. I guess their new realms should have been established by that time or these Dwarves became lords under e.g. Durin and did not found a new realm. I guess then the descriptions Dwarf-kings would be misleading though. If they founded new realms and became kings of those, this must have been in the east I guess, they question is: are there enough mountains for 6 Dwarf-kings without bothering each other? But ofc e.g. the Grey Mountains are big and this might be a decent explanation for 2 Rings being destroyed by dragons, but we still would need 2 more of them being destroyed.

@@ThePhilosophersGames Yes, most of the dwarves from the Blue Mountains relocated to Khazad-dum in year 40 of the Second Age. It might be that the ruling kings of three Houses of the Dwarves were located in Moria at the same time. My assumption is that they remained there until the Balrog of Moria was awakened. Some may have returned to the Ered Luin while others might have established settlements in the Grey Mountains. I assume that dragons also attacked dwarven mansions in the Mountains of the East (the Orocarni). That might account for the destruction of the other two Rings.

@@HerrrLuna At least some members of those clans must have fallen into Sauron's control. We do learn that all of the Dwarf-clans were united in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs following the death of Thorin's grandfather Thror.

Just rewatched this video (it's still great), and remembered something regarding 13:00 and the source of information: The best explanation, and the one suggested in LotR, is that it's Gimli who surely knows his people's history. From the first paragraph of Appendix A: The section A III, Durin’s Folk , was probably derived from Gimli the Dwarf, who maintained his friendship with Peregrin and Meriadoc and met them again many times in Gondor and Rohan.

He would be a very reliable source, though a very late one (my thought goes a bit in the direction of this event being in the past for so long, so that no "contemporary" source can exist). Fantastic video. Always with passion and knowledge. Since there is a lot of unknown regarding these Dwarven rings, it leaves a lot of possibilities for the upcoming Amazon series. Since we know the Dragons took some of the Dwarven rings, maybe we will see a Dragon or two in the Rings of power series...

Thank you :) Yes I really hope we see more Dwarves in the series. And having dragons would also be interesting, though I think we don't have many records of dragon attacks from the Second Age. And even in teh third Age we only know about 3 incidents with dragons (Scatha, "War of Dwarves and Dragons" and Smaug at least that is what I can think off out of my head)

@@ThePhilosophersGames They said in a statement from Amazon that they will ell the story of all the rings, and I am curious how the Dwarven rings will fit into this story. I think it is possible to include Dragons in the series even if it is not mentioned specifically, and as you pointed out in the video Tolkien has not gone into depth regarding all the houses of the Dwarfes. So there is room for creativety here without going againts the Tolkien canon.

I've come to love this channel. How did the dwarves recover rings from Sauron ? Fighting toe to toe.

I think it is possible that the Broadbeams and Firebeards who migrated to Khazad-Dûm had their lineage still represented by a king, who may have been a vassall of the Longbeard king. That would make three obvious candidates to receive a ring of power from Sauron. However, it seems questionable whether any of them would accept such a gift, since they were hostile towards Sauron (though he may have attempted to conceal his involvement in the distribution) and possibly knew from the Elves that Sauron betrayed them with said rings. And in that case, Durin III may have kept his ring because he indeed received it from Celebrimbor. Why do you assume that Sauron would know about Durin holding a ring at that point? Celebrimbor did not reveal the location of the Three, he could have just as well been silent on his gift to the Longbeards. As you suggested, this would mean that 6 of the 7 landed in the Far East. It is not a very satisfying answer but one that works, and I guess Tolkien did not know the answer himself as he wrote Gandalf's lines. I like to think that the distribution of the 6 caused a division in at least two Dwarven kingdoms (e.g. two ambitious sons of the king receive a ring each), so that new kingdoms were founded in secession and founded on the greed fuelled by the ring. In Nature of Middle-Earth as I recall it is mentioned that the Eastern Dwarves had their fair share of trouble with dragons, so that works with the claim that 4 rings were consumed by fire. Love your analysis on a classic hardcore lore question :-)

Absolutely sure that you will go down in you tube and Tolkien lore history as the most thoughtful and thorough contributor. There are many who’s contributions are invaluable and will place near your star but just as stars in the sky can look very, very close, we know the are a gazillion miles apart. I think you should do a video of how you got interested, and what inspired you to go this far. I would like to know the back story of all Lore content providers. Maybe that’s a podcast topic. As far as the notifications, if the come with a reminder, that reminder is nearly inaudible. I have looked for a way to increase the notification tones and I am unsuccessful in adjusting this setting …if such a setting exists. So if anyone got this far and you have iPhone savvy, please advise. Thanks For all you do!

The pronunciation has one pilot so far, but I could make many more. And I already did one more general on Tolkien's languages, that also considers Appendix E and F. So so far there are two videos (it's also a topic here and there in other videos).

A reasoning behind the different versions of the lore could be explained by knowing from who or by who the parts of the stories and lore is seen as a perspective of. We know most humans tell their stories with biases from their opinions, the inconsistencies of their own memories, and the way they perceived and experienced the events from their perspective. An orc would not tell a story of an event the same way an elf would. Nor would any individual man or woman generally tell the exact same story but a story based upon their personal experience of that same event. For some there were lies - others saw truths, and so on. We could divide Tolkien lore into the perspectives of the characters doing the re-telling. This would also increase the richness of the complexity of all the behavior, emotions, and political machinations behind the scenes. If one character tells a story differently - we must ask ourselves why. It makes for good stories in itself.

Thanks for this exhaustive look into the Dwarven Rings. One thing I'd like to know is were those Rings made by Sauron for the purpose of subjugating the Dwarves, or were all the Rings of Power only meant for the Elves? Sauron was a Maia of Aule, who created the race of Dwarves. I can't understand why the children of Eru himself were susceptible to the One Ring's power, but the Dwarves weren't. The common factor seems to be Aule.

Originally the Rings of Power were made by the Elves for the Elves, but ofc in theory they could be useful to anyone. Sauron only made the One Ring and touched the 16 Rings of Power. Though all rings are based on his designs. Yes Aulë is an interesting connection though, but they were made to be very resistant against evil powers and are ofc also stubborn like a stone 😄

My guess is that the majority of Dwarf Houses settled in the Red Mountains and Sauron would have been easily able to gift them rings from there being much further east, plus they may not have known about the war to recover the rings yet and Sauron likely came to them in a disguise. Perhaps Celebrimbor did gift a ring to Durin III as Sauron was bearing down on him with his armies as a way to hide it. Maybe Sauron learned of this later and thats what compelled him to gift the 6 other rings to the other dwarf kings.

Yes, Sauron having a lot of influence and power in the East is for sure a good argument for that.

I read that in the aftermath of the War of Wrath and the sinking of Beleriand, most of the surviving Firebeards and Broadbeams left to go to Khazad-dûm. Perhaps, they eventually re-established themselves as independent dwarven clans at other locations farther east.

Yes, that is correct. I red this quote: “There were and always remained some Dwarves on the eastern side of Ered Lindon, where the very ancient mansions of Nogrod and Belegost had been - not far from Nenuial; but they had transferred most of their strength to Khazad-dûm.” You are right I maybe could have explained this a bit further. The problem is we sadly don't know too much what exactly happens with those dwarves and their kings. Maybe they were slain in the war of wrath? Or as you say re-established realms elsewhere in the east. Or they simply became lords among Durin's folk. It really seems though, that they did not stay in the Blue Mountains and as explained that also would make little sense.

That's literally in this video.

I have a couple of head-cannon things about the rings, that I don't think are either proven by the text or contradicted (though if I'm wrong, let me know): First, I think the rings were optimized for different uses, but fundamentally would function the same, kind of like how a web server, which could be very powerful in it's own right, would make a poor gaming PC, though on a conceptual level, they work fundamentally the same. I think that originally the seven were intended for the Eregion, and would have been somehow tweaked to aid in crafting and finding raw materials. It would make sense that these would be gifted to the dwarves, who would value the same things. The nine were probably intended for the other elven lords, and would probably be optimized for magic and leadership, which is how they're implied to be used by the men who eventually got them (and the three elven rings were optimized for protection and preservation). Second, I don't think Sauron just tossed nine random people rings and just gtfo'd. He probably spent some time teaching people the basics of how to use them. My guess is that, at least for the nine, in addition to basic magic and using the rings to dominate, that probably included how to turn invisible or not at will, like with the elven rings, though as their will was dominated by Sauron, they lost the will to turn back, staying invisible all the time. Gandalf or Elrond probably could have taught Bilbo or Frodo how to do it, too, but for Bilbo, Gandalf was too focused on other things and probably didn't really see the point, and for Frodo, anything that would encourage him to use the ring more was seen as way too dangerous.

Yes as you said the Rings were all made for the Elves originally. I like your idea that the rings might have a specific purpose. I think though that's nowhere indicated (except the Elven Rings of Power, which had a different purpose; you could maybe argue that was similar fort the other rings). In regards of 2) I agree that he probably selected specific people. Though I would say he did not have to stay physically with them for a while, because wearing the Rings of Power made them perceive Sauron and his phantoms anyway: "They could walk, if they would, unseen by all eyes in this world beneath the sun, and they could see things in worlds invisible to mortal men; but too often they beheld only the phantoms and delusions of Sauron. And one by one, sooner or later, according to their native strength and to the good or evil of their wills in the beginning, they fell under the thraldom of the ring that they bore and under the domination of the One, which was Sauron's."

@@ThePhilosophersGames I remember that line, and kind of used it as a justification for the fact that the nine who were originally given the rings had the ability to turn invisible and invisible at will. Personally, I could see Sauron coming up to the future Nazgul, and be like, "Hey, I can help you build a great kingdom/bring order/find out all these mysteries, etc", give them a ring that appeared to do all that (and taught them how to use it), only to have extended use of it slowly corrupt them and bring them under Sauron's influence, until they became perfectly loyal servants of him, completely under Sauron's dominion, whatever their original intention. I don't think that Sauron would have needed to spend a long time doing this, but I think he would have at least given away the rings of power directly, instead of, say, delivering them by a messenger. I don't think there's any direct proof he did this, but showing up and offering advice and gifts that initially _seems_ good, only to have the person receiving it fall under his corruption, seems to be a part of Sauron's MO, and kind of where he was the most effective. He did it with the Eregions and he did it with the Numenoreans.

Well the Rings don't make you invisible and visible at will. The One Ring does that because it pulls the wearer into the wraith world/world of the unseen. It's not indicated that the other Rings ever did this. The 9 Nazgul are invisible because they have lived so long that their physical bodies have faded away, but they haven't died. They have no fleshly bodies to return to. The invisibility is more of a side effect vs an ability.

You forgot to mention that during council in Imladris we learn, that Sauron's messenger was offering three remaining rings to the king of Erebor, but he was rejected.

But it changes many things. For example it proves that giving the six remaining rings to the dwarves after seeing the effect on Durin is actually profitable for Sauron. Even if the rings do not fulfill the purpose of their creation, they possess a great value just in trade or alliance forming. We know by fact that some dwarves were fighting as Sauron's allies during the second age, but none of them were Durin's folk. Sauron might have gifted the rings to the other houses so they will answer when called. If Durin received a ring from elves, then he didn't own such allegiance.

For sure it had value, but also for Sauron himself, because he had not the One Ring in the Third Age, this potentially diminished the value of others having Rings of Power. I don't think Sauron would have kept his promise anyway (giving the rings to the Dwarves would not have helped much in the foreseeable future and Sauron had little time) and the Dwarves maybe learnt that getting those rings is more trouble than use too. In addition Sauron got the Rings back and the Dwarves would not have given them back willingly, which the dwarves probably knew. They were for sure not happy about that too.

Thanks for the video. I have a question about your pronunciation of Thrain and Dain. I know you are very deliberate about pronunciation. How did you come to pronounce these as if they have an “o” in them?

No problem, glad you liked it ^^ The names of all the Dwarves from the Hobbit and some additional names are Old Norse and Tolkien borrowed them from the Poetic Edda (Codex Regius and Hauksbók as sources for it; it includes Norse mythology in poem form, there is also a Prose Edda). In Old Norse á/Á is the long A and in reconstructed Old Norse the á is pronounced more as an "O" sound. You find e.g. in some northern languages these days the letter Å,which based on this (pronunciations vary, but seem also pronounce it as O). There might have been a very early time in the development of Old Norse where the vowel was just a prolonged A as it is the case with the long versions of the other vowels, but linguists assume this change of the long A must have happened early, because it appears in so many northern languages (in some way). After doing a lot of research I decided to go with reconstructed Old Norse with the pronunciation, though in my opinion anglicising is totally fine too. This is an unusual edge case with no right or wrong. happy to hear ^^ Yes Sara Morello's art is really good. I love her interpretation of Galadriel and her granddaughter Arwen.

Another engrossing video. There really just isn't enough Dwarf media out there. Now, if you're a skinny tree-hugging Elf on the other hand ...

@@ThePhilosophersGames 'Galadriel' *sigh, if you have to (jk). At least Galadriel is pretty atypical for an Elf. I recently caught a random video on the topic of an indie, first-person, Dwarf rpg exploring a Moria-style ancestral hall which looks pretty neat. Seems like mainly a proof-of-concept for now but hopefully they can cobble together at least a dungeaon-crawl experience. It's a great idea.

It has to do with the diacritic above the A, in (reconstructed) Old Norse this letter is the long A and it is pronounced more like an O. and A and I don't form a diphthong. So all names with á are o + what follows. in all almost other cases the sound of the normal vowel is simply held longer for the long version, but we know that this must have been different for a and á, because we see it e.g. in modern Icleandic (there it's an "ow" sound like "owl", or "how"). In Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, etc we find the letter Å, which is the long A. Originally it's possible that the long a was just a long a like the others, but it changed at some point and it is believed, because this change of the long a is present in pretty much all Scandinavian languages, that it must have happened quite early on in the history of Old Norse. However that is not the case for the other vowels and their long versions, which why here everything is as to be expected. So Ó is just the long version of O. the sound of the long á might be slightly different. There is also ǫ (O caudata), so they had a lot of O sounds.

Your insights are spot on your information is correct I just can't get over your overpronunciation of words it's distracting and makes me think I'm listening to a different language I'm sorry I just can't get past it so I will not be watching anymore of your videos

That is unfortunate, but I can understand that. I guess it's basically that: different languages invented by Tolkien and the names are ofc part of those languages. In case of the Dwarven names it's even a real world language (Old Norse). It's one detail you can't get right. When I anglicise all names, some complain about not sticking to what Tolkien wrote about pronunciation, when I try to go for the somewhat correct pronunciations, some people find it distracting. I get both sides, but I can't please both. I guess anglicising is the more "mainstream" approach though.
