Jacob, A great improvement from his ancestor who sets the bride price to just steal a jewel from the devil, but otherwise does not requires anything else. Also an improvement from his other ancestor who basically arrange the marriage with the father of the groom because he thought the father of the groom is his son.

It’s like when Thingol told Beren to get a Silmaril off Morgoth’s crown in exchange for Luthien’s hand. That’s one hell of a dowry.

Unfortunately, due to his immortality, Elrond would go insane and lead the forces of Hydra in ww2 after a botched super soldier experiment. His whereabouts are unknown, but it's speculated that he was spotted leading people to a treasure he could not possess.

Many years after his spectral days at Vormir, he once again appeared as a powerful programming, an agent of the system and, like other Agents, had the role to police and maintain the Matrix by eliminating potential threats to the stability of the system, which were mostly seen to be Redpills and defunct programs. Elrond exemplifies everything it is to be an elf - he lost his father, mother, brother and daughter. Never to see them again and yet he endured. After Finrod, he has been the greatest Elven teacher to men. He fought, and he healed. He submitted to Gil-Galad's reign despite being a descendant of a Maiar. And when he created his own 'realm', it was not one of strength and fortitude but of peace and hospitality.

His parents are at least in Valinor, most likely. If not, then they'd be in the Halls of Mandos, where he could still potentially see them again. They're not completely beyond possibility for him to see again. Arwen and Elros, however, are truly beyond the possibility of him ever seeing again, at least before the end of the world. And aside from Luthien (and *maybe* Elladan and Elrohir, who Tolkien never specified their choices), they're the only two Elf/Half-Elf souls to depart Arda. Even the end of the world (where the world is made anew and Men take part of the second Song with Eru and the Valar) isnt a guarantee, since (iirc) Tolkien never actually settled on whether Elves are part of the Second Song/new Arda or not

Though he ironically is very different from the elves as he has a far more easy going nature and is far more open minded.

I love Elrond. He's that rare Elf who understood and lived with the weight of love and sacrifice. Every choice he made honored his family and his kin. I've always imagined that like his father, he eventually meets Manwe. And that Manwe would embrace him and say, "My son, you have done well. You make us proud!"

Detach from this world and the distractions/pleasures in it.This world and the things in it are temporary, spend your time doing something that will matter in the long run. Do as much as you can to help other people while you are here so that you are ready to face Jesus on judgement day. The last 3000+ years of human history have been a testimony in favor of God's word. Contemplate how the Roman Empire fulfilled the role of the beast from the sea in Revelation 13. Revelation 17 confirms that it is in fact Rome. From this we can conclude that A) Jesus is the son of God and can tell the future or make it happen B) The world leaders/governments/nations etc have been conspiring together to accomplish this roadmap set in place by the Israelites or C) History as we know it is fake despite the archaeological evidence. You don't really need to speculate though because you can start a relationship with God and have proof. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life - Revelation 3:20. The world is rapidly passing away and eventually you will have to stand before God on judgement day and explain to Him what you have done with your life. Make sure you are making every effort to help others while you can

I find it so beautiful how Elrond was raised by someone who wasn't biologically related to him and later on raised someone who wasn't biologically related to him.

Yes, let us ignore that Elrond and Elros' twin uncles were abandoned to die alone after their foster father betrayed and murdered their grandfather, Díor. Let's also forget that Elrond and Elros were taken from their homes after they were destroyed by the greed and pride of the House of Fëanor, and that it was because of them that Elrond and Elros never saw their mother again. None of this is wholesome

Yes it was beautiful how ‘Middle Earth adoption’ worked in these stories… Things could have been much worse. It started with greed and murder and could have very well ended with more greed and murder. Elrond and his brother could have been killed off, Aragorn could have been thrown into the wilderness to die. As children, they wouldn’t have survived without protection. It’s nice that there were characters like the merciful uncle and Elrond to add some good into the tragic storyline. We choose what we want to focus on. Only the negative stuff or the positive redeeming things. It would have been nice to have seen a Dwarf get taken in by the Elves but that would have been asking for too much, lol.

@@moscanaveia But Maeglor was always a reluctant follower of his father and brothers. That doesn't excuse him, but nothing can change the fact that he did take the twins to raise, whereas Maedhros would either have abandoned or killed them.

3:34 I always feel a wave of sadness when I see that drawing of the two brothers. One now mortal and soon to die, while the other immortal now to lose his twin forever. Another pain for Elrond to endure as with the passing of his own daughter.

You can't tell me Elrond don't have Abandonment issues. Father often absent cause Earendil was looking for Valinor. Elwing has Sirion to rule. Foster Fathers disappeared, one dead, the other singing until the ends of the world. A brother choosing mortality, Gil Galad burnt inside out, Celebrian tortured and left. Then his daughter chose mortality again. The dude life story is enough to have a series of his own.

Well at least he remained friends with his parents-in-laws until the end of the Third Age. I wonder if Galadriel and Celeborn were ever able to give him some parental affection

7:40 one important detail here was Isildur was going to ask Elrond for council about what to do with the ring on his way back north. After possessing it for awhile and not being able to bend it to his will he knew he had to do something. He could tell the ring was more like to slowly have an effect on him than the other way around. So unlike the movies he came to the right conclusion eventually but never got to see it through.

15:03 Liv Tyler was Peter Jackson's best casting decision. Her Elvish pronunciation was breathtaking, sincere & flawless, her manner noble, and Arwen's face is now deservedly hers. A good example of a minor character that becomes unforgettable. You don't have to be the greatest actor ever to inhabit a role so as to own it.

not saying this as an attempt to be a dick, more for the sake of discussion...but i honestly didn't like Arwen in the movies. she felt over dramatic and like she existed solely to slobber over Aragorn in every scene. it wasn't until the extended editions that she actually gained any modicum of character. (i say this as someone who hasn't read the books)

That picture of old Elros and forever-young Elrond saying goodbye at 3:40 tears my heart out of my chest every time I see it.

Elrond's story is legendary. He was born during the late years of the First Age when Morgoth plagued Middle-Earth. He fought in the War of the Last Alliance and the War of the Ring. His father was Earendil, but he was raised by Maglor from the House of Feanor.

Yeah Elrond’s dad is about the closest Jesus parallel you’ll find in Middle Earth, his brother was a God King for Middle Earth’s Roman Empire equivalent, he’s either related to or held in high regard by every other super important elf. The man is crazy.

​@@delphinazizumbo8674Maglor was a prince and was once King Regent. Fought three battles against Morgoth, committed three kinslayings not to mention a powerful bard and we know singing is basically power. The twins being raised by Maglor would give them an edge though not good on their reputation.

Another noteable thing about Elrond and his family; If you include his fosterage by Maglor and Maedhros as some form of parentage, it makes Arwen (by Elrond's marriage to Celebrian) the first being in Middle Earth to descend from the houses of Beor the old and Hador, and the people of Haleth, as well as all three Noldor houses AND the house of Thingol.

yep I always thought it this way! I am obsessed and in awe with their lineage so much. The bloodlines of Elladan, Elrohir and Arwen are pretty fascinating. Oh also wouldn't Arwen and her brothers have Teleri blood as well through their grandmother Galadriel. She's the daughter of Earwen who's the princess of the Teleri ( Earwen daughter of Olwe, king of the Teleri)

If memory doesn't the God that created elfs and the one who created the Dwarfs are really close, he is the one that sends Radagast the earth mage to middle earth to take care of the animals and plants of Middle earth which is why we don't see him along Saruman and Gandalf.

@@glcsander actually nope, but it's close in some ways. Eru Illúvatar created the elves and men, but the dwarves were created by Aule, Smith of the Valar (while him also being a creation of Illúvatar). Aule created the dwarves because he wanted someone to teach so bad but he couldn't give them independent lives and souls since he was not Eru. Later on, Eru Illúvatar confronts him about his creatures and Aule is ready to destroy the dwarves but Illúvatar has mercy on them and gives them souls. The Vala who sent Radagast/Aiwendil to Middle Earth is not Aule, but actually his wife, Yavanna.

So true. But it’s real in the sense that fake characters represent real emotions, archetypes, experiences, and aspects of humanity. I read somewhere that Tolkien expressed the view that myth represents truth about humanity and its environment far better than the crude factuality of science is able to. It allows people to see in a new light what has become commonplace and drab. Although Elves, for instance, do not "exist" in a scientific sense, they embody the creative skill and immortality of the human spirit, and therefore do exist. As Tolkien put it, the storyteller "makes a Secondary World in which your mind can enter. Inside it, what he relates is "true": it accords with the laws of that world. You therefore believe it, while you are, as it were, inside". He called this process sub-creation: by creating a parallel world, the myth-maker emulates God, the supreme creator.

@@keyboarddancers7751 In what way embedded? I thought schools all over world are teaching the Hellenic Cultures. My high school is teaching the hellenic culture, specially the Trojan War. Though Tolkien based his legendarium in Norse Mythology. Bec in his youth, he wondered why Great Bretain has no mythology on its own. So he made his own.

I always think of Elrond looking up into the night sky and seeing his parents, Eärendil and Elwing, traverse it. It's truly mythic. But I do sometimes forget the tenderness of Maglor, their foster parent. Maglor was possibly the least obviously accomplished of Fëanor's children, but in this act of kindness he may have saved his father's legacy. Through Elrond and his immediate kin, and the eventual lineage of Elros, would the sins of Ñoldor be redeemed.

Least accomplished? Maglor Faenorion, Kanafinwe Makalaure, least accomplished? Oh my... He may have Nerdanel's gentleness but have you forgotten who his father is? Unlike Maedhros, Maglor didn't protest the burning of the ships. He was High King himself for thirty years throughout Maedhros torture. You got to have nerves of steel and diplomatic prowess to give up your brother for dead, rein in the Noldor, one group being Fingolfin's house who crossed the Grinding Ice and basically preventing a civil war to occur. He supported Maedhros and held Maglor's Gap for decades ensuring East Beleriand is safe. When they were betrayed in the Nirnaeth, Maglor personally took care of one of the main betrayers hunting him down throughout the chaos. He participated in all three kinslayings. And not to mention he is a freaking Bard. Songs are basically power in Tolkienverse and he's the greatest bard of all the Noldor. Maglor is loyal to his family and driven to a fault.

I’ve always had the head canon that Elladan and Elrohir stayed behind in Middle Earth for their sister Arwen, and also king Elessar. They already lost their mother to orcs, so it makes sense that they’d want to be there up to the end of her life to protect her. Their close bonds with Aragorn may have also had a deciding factor in having them stay longer

Elrond the one who is part Maiar, Elf, and man! That is one hell of a lineage!

Really cool to think when Thorin’s company goes to Rivendell, 10 year old Aragorn is there.

This was a beautiful and touching review of one of the most important characters in Tolkien’s legendarium. Well done! I particularly liked the way you treated Elrond’s fostering of Aragorn and his influence in his life. It is fascinating to think about the parallels between the union of Aragorn and Arwen and that of their mutual distant (for Aragorn) ancestors, Beren and Luthien. I love how in both stories the father sets an enormous bride price on his daughters hand that involves challenging the Dark Lord on his own throne. The obvious difference was that Luthien’s father was driven by jealousy and greed in his challenge of Beren to bring him one of the Silmarils from Morgoth’s crown. Elrond, on the other hand, is genuinely motivated by love of his brothers people and his heir, Aragorn. His sacrifice plays a major role in driving Aragorn to dedicate his life to the fight against Sauron.

Imagine looking up almost every night for thousands of years, seeing Eärendil/Venus, and being like "Yep, that's my dad up there."

i don‘t get how that works. Is Earendil like literally up there alone? How does his days look?

I always wondered why it was Maglor who took pity on Elrond and Elros when it was Maedhros who searched high and low for Elured and Elurin in the previous Kinslaying. I guess both brothers were feeling the weight and hopelessness of the Oath and trying to resist it. I wonder how much that time with an Elf who saw the light of the two trees and lived so much of life and saw so much evil and hardship had an effect on Elrond and his desire to have a homely house of healing...

I think by then, Maedhros and Maglor were probably sick of all the killing and evil-deeds they had gotten associated with and did themselves, and although they regretted it, they felt trapped by an Oath they swore on Eru Iluvatar Himself. Certainly, by the time of the War of Wrath's conclusion, when the two remaining Silmarils in Middle Earth were finally in the possession of the Host of the Valar, there was no realistic hope of getting them back but they felt obliged, sickened though they were, to demand their return from Eonwe who refused them. And, doomed by their Oath, they then felt compelled to attack the guards and steal the Silmarils, and only then realised that it had all - all of it - been in vain as they could no longer even touch them without the jewels burning their hands. They couldn't keep the Silmarils, they had lost their father and brothers as well as a life in Valinor for nothing and that's why both cast their Silmaril to where it could not be retrieved and Maedhros committed suicide, leaving Maglor to wander the shores along singing regretfully until he "faded". At the point of the Kinslaying that resulted in Elrond and Elros' capture, these two were probably most of the way to this point of regret but they felt obligated to see it through for better or for ill. So, having caused potentially the death of the boys' mother (since I assume they did not realise she survived jumping into the sea) and the innocent boys being so very young - 6 years is basically an tiny infant in Elf terms - they probably sought to make amends in as best a way as they could.

@@sweeperboy couldn't have said it better myself. What do you think about the Valar pronouncing the Doom (curse?) On them with such fatal and irredeemable terms? I know the Oath itself doesn't leave a lot of room for backing out, given the nature of oaths and the swearing to Eru himself, but I can't help that the Valar Mishandled the whole Darkening of Valinor and death of Finwe situation. No wonder so many Noldor we're convinced to leave. The Valar didn't exactly come to the rescue and then when they do show up it's to doom them. Very sad stuff. It breaks my heart that Maedhros and Maglor had to find out personally find out they were no longer able to possess the jewels since they'd been hallowed. I bet Maglor would have returned them after all this time in an effort to redeem himself and fulfill the oath.

@@thethirdrichard7787 Its heartbreaking really. The sons of Faenor are among the greatest but also the tragic elves to ever live. Maedhros passing his crown to Fingolfin and establishing Himring, basically a painted target on Morgoth's sight. Maglor holding the Gap, Celegorm and Curufin in the Himlads, Caranthir being a genius and establishing steady trade with men and dwarves, Ambarussa hunting so often. And then we have the Siege of Angband, Bragollach, and Nirnaeth which the Faenorians fought and all brothers surviving just showed their tenacity. They're also diplomatic for the most part, asking for the Silmaril first and withholding their oaths before attacking Doriath and Sirion. The second kinslaying also showed their genius, I mean they had to wait for the girdle to fall. The third was every bit of a tragedy. I think what drove them to kinslayings is the compulsion of the oath and the desire for their family to be saved from the void. The Valar did them dirty and really slapped Maglor and Maedhros in their faces that the kinslayings to retrieve the Silmarils, all those lives, were all in vain. That they're never free from the oath and off to the void they all go. I can't blame Maedhros for jumping in the burning chasm, I would too.

feel bad for elrond when you realized he never meet his twin brother again after 58 2nd Age and see his descendants fall twice in a very major way. still even after that he willingly fostered and support their heirs until Sauron Fall. truly an amazing character in the legendarium

Elros and Elrond both chose their fate aged 90. Only after that Elros took the throne as the First King of Numenor. Obviously they would have met until Elros' death in SA 442.

@@goodputin4324 Maybe true, despite i would love to see Elrond meet Elros in his final moment, this paragraph really bother me a lot. to quote : "There idea description in a late philological essay of the first meeting if the Nunenoreans with the Men of Eriador at that time: "it was six hundred years after the departure of the survivors of the Atani [Edain] over the sea to Numenor that a ship first came again out of the West to Middle-earth and passed up the Gulf of Lhun. Its captain and mariners were welcomed by Gil-galad; and thus was begun the friendship and alliance of Numenor with the Eldar of Lindon." Unfinished Tales, Aldarion and Erendis, Note 3 however there still a small chance that Elrond did sail to numenor thanks to ya boi Cirdan but it still a theory

@@goodputin4324 So they were 6 years old when they were taken in Sirion. And how many years were they fostered by the Feanorians? I always believed the twins were in their 30s or 40s and mayhaps joined with their foster fathers towards the end of the War of Wrath. And it was after the War of Wrath when they were given the choice by Eonwe. The timeline confuses me a little so I could be wrong. (I think I'm wrong. Can't seem to find a proper timeline)

Elrond was pretty much part of almost everything, from the War of Wrath and Melkor to the end of the Third Age. Stories he could tell...

I always smile when I think about Elrond (and Galadriel, for that matter) being reunited with Celebrían. In my mind, they lived happily ever after 😤

Love the video! Elrond is such a timeless and classic character, he definitely led a hard life and lost so many people that he loved dearly. His lineage is just incredibly insane being 56% Elf, 37% Man and 6% Maia was always cool to me. Also just my head cannon which I mentioned in discord about his sons. I think that Elladan and Elrohir stayed behind at least until after Arwen passes and sailed or they wait and sail when Celeborn leaves in F.o.A 171.

Elrond's ancestry is the craziest thing ever. Descended from a Maiar, all three major groups of elves (noldor, Sindar, and Teleri) and 2 great houses of men.

@@NerdoftheRings thanks for the content, re -reading the books (silmarillion - to lord of the rings trilogy) lately and seeing how many things I just don't remember is awesome, but it's so much better when you add so much more to a world I love!

One of my biggest complaints about the LoTR movies is how they handled Elrond. He comes off as cold and untrusting until almost the very end, which is so different from how he came off in the books

If Jackson had made a word for word movie series it would be three ages long 😂. And if I was immortal I would watch them over and over.

Damn, the guy who plays Elrond in the Amazon series really looks nothing like the mighty and wise half elf you described in your video. They didn't even bother to give him the right hair colour, which they could have done easily. I just really hope that they don't butcher the character and story of one of the greatest beings that have ever lived in Middle Earth. They can do what they want to Galadriel and the rest but at least do justice to Elrond.

The case of Tuor is a mistery. In The Silmarillion is stated that "in after days it was sung that Tuor alone of mortal Men was numbered among the elder race, and was joined with the Noldor, whom he loved; and his fate is sundered from the fate of Men". In Letter 153 Tolkien wrote: "Tuor weds Idril the daughter of Turgon King of Gondolin; and 'it is supposed' (not stated) that he as an unique exception receives the Elvish limited 'immortality': an exception either way". Not even the Professor confirmed Tuor was accounted among the Firstborns. Sure, it is something nice to consider, specially after everything he's been through and fought for. But in the end of the day, it's just another legend with no clear answer (or Elvish gossip, as I like to say, 🤭🤭🤭).

Even though Elrond was an incredibly powerful leader, what I've always appreciated about him was how down to earth and accepting he was. His willingness to nurture others helped many of Middle Earth's greatest heroes succeed. His title as a healer extended far beyond just physical injuries.

The Second Age. And this was the Age in which Elrond would truly make a name for himself as one of the key players in the fate of Middle Earth.

This is such an awesome story to be told. Just imagine what Amazon COULD HAVE DONE with show about the histories of Middle Earth. Each season could have been a story arc that covers the lives of characters like Elrond and Galadriel and covered what happened over the courses of their long 1000s of years spent alive. I for one would love to see the tales of Fingolfin so that his battle against Morgoth could be brought to life. That would be one of THE MOST EPIC battles to be portrayed on screen ever if they would just damn do it right. Theres enough material in the tales of the Silmarillion to make episodic shows and even movies based on all the stuff in it for years and years and years.

The life of Elrond alone would make a good TV series

Always loved his story and character so much ever since reading Tolkien and watching the movies & I'm such a fan of Robert Aramayo's portrayal of him in the series ❤️

I have been a LOTR's and Hobbit fan for over 20 years, and I never knew about all the other stories of the 1st and 2nd Age or anything else until recently haha! Now I'm seriously addicted to all the lore, and I've watched almost all your video's already. I just ordered 'The Silmarillion' book and I'm excited to read it, but I've heard that it's a challenging read :)

In ancient Greek myth gods often mated with humans and twins were the result. One twin was usually mortal and the other divine. Castor and Pollux (Helen of Troy's brothers) decided to share fates and so are either mortal or divine on alternate days.

I'm not familiar with most Greek Myth twins but at least for Heracles and his twin it was a form of superfecundation. Twins with two different fathers. A mortal and a divine one. It's insanely rare but does happen in real life(minus the divine father).

Truly Lord Elrond is immortal, you can find him up to this day in Australia . He just recently celebrated his 6,200 birthdays🥰.

Man, to think that an elf as young as Elrond could have gone through so much. (Yes, kinda young, at least in comparison to those who'd seen the light of the Trees. Folks like Galadriel and especially Cirdan are practically eldritch in comparison to his 6k plus years, especially if you use the longer length for the Years of the Trees in Valinor. I think Glorfindel is significantly older.)

Yeah it is nice to know that when Elrond left his daughter and sons on Middle-Earth from the Grey Havens, it's good to now know that his wife was waiting for him on the other side in Valinor! This reminds me of Maximus from Gladiator. Although he dies and must leave Lucius and Lucilla, he is then able to rejoin with his wife and son in the afterlife!

One of the reasons people watch live actions despite some of it 'sucking' is to have a reference for their beloved characters.

Man it’s gonna be so cool watching Elrond NOT lead the Elves to war in Rings of Power since Galadriel is doing that now.

It's not just a father putting a near impossible price on his daughters hand which is the most badass point. But deliberately placing it knowing full well that aragorn had the means to deliver them. He showed her immense value to him even when using her to encourage the man who will save the world into doing so. And what's even more badass is he gave up his own personal feelings against losing her to mortality and never sailing west with him, in order to save the world. He didn't even set it as a price for her hand, but for losing her companionship and life, and knew she was the drive and price he'd have to pay to save the world. So in depth it's unreal. Like real people with real dilemmas

I have just subscribed to your channel. I congratulate you on your research, the pictures and portraits, and also your pronunciation of Tolkien's Elvish names. Back in the early 1990s, I was a member of the Oxford Tolkien Society. I have lost much knowledge, and intend to acquire again The Silmarillion, The Book of Lost Tales, Unfinished Tales, and the other publications by Christopher Tolkien, from whence The Hobbit came. I recommend these books, for the depth and breadth that the Internet cannot provide. The best ways of learning do not have an on/off switch. I salute you.

I kinda wish that they would make a show that showed us what it looked like with Aragorn bringing peace to the realm, watching him fight the Corsairs and Easterlings, and dealing with Sauron's lingering influence over them

My fellow nerds! How often do you think Elrond thought of Elros? I’ve known a few pairs of twins very well and they did EVERYTHING together. Imagine that pain and love, especially after Elros’ passing. Do you think Elronds decisions were influenced by his love of his twin, even deep into the third age?

I would have to imagine they were. Identical twins are often two halves of a single whole. I find it curious that Tolkien never really went into detail on WHY the two of them chose separate races, instead of both making the same choice. My guess is that Elros took it to heart that Illuvatar himself referred to mortality not as the doom of men, but as "the gift of men", and trusted that there must be a reason for that. Given everything that Elrond experienced in his life, it may well be that Elros actually chose the easier path.
