Salaryman culture is a unique and iconic aspect of Japanese society. The term "salaryman" refers to white-collar workers, typically men, employed by corporations in Japan. Salarymen are known for their dedication to their jobs, long working hours, and a distinct way of life that revolves around their professional careers.
One area that exemplifies this culture is Yurakucho in Tokyo. Here, you can witness the salaryman culture in full swing. During lunch breaks and after work, the streets are filled with salarymen heading to and from their offices, often stopping at izakayas (Japanese-style pubs) for meals and drinks.
In today’s adventure, Shizuka explores Tokyo’s lively Yurakucho district with a real Japanese salaryman (the only person for the job). Satoru-san gives our host a rundown of salaryman culture; after a long day at the office, salarymen in Yurakucho and other parts of Japan engage "nomikai" or drinking parties. These gatherings provide an opportunity for colleagues to bond, discuss work-related matters, and build camaraderie.
In the spirit of things, Shizuka and Satoru-san begin their “nomikai” at Andy's Shin Hinomoto. Beer, sake, and izakaya foods sprawl over the table as our spirited stars drink and be merry. Satoru-san shares some insider knowledge of Japanese izakayas and their connection to salaryman culture. He explains the interesting origins of the term izakaya, which literally translates to "a place to be with alcohol” in Japanese.
After lining their stomachs, the show must go on! Next stop: Bimi Sennari. Shizuka and Satoru-san share stories over some house highballs and heartwarming corned beef with cheese and potatoes. Cheeks flushed and spirits high, our unstoppable duo ventures onto their third and final destination; an izakaya tucked beneath an underpass. Motsuyaki Fuji is known and loved for their motsu (offal) dishes and grilled skewers. Shizuka and Satoru-san enjoy their final stop of the evening with an ice-cold Asahi beer and motsu nikomi (pork innard and vegetable stew).

Satoru is such a chill guy, I really like how he went into the details of the history, exlaining the early origins of the drinking culture back into the Edo period. It's cool to get a glimpse into this.

My father wasn't a salaryman but an engineer and for about 5 years he was working for an international company and was stationed in Japan (my mother and I were with him 2 of those 5 years). He always tells me there were occasions where they would work on a bridge or mountain pass/tunnel in the more rural parts of Japan. Instead of their normal izakaya after work his Japanese coworkers would bring him along to the nearby hot springs to unwind, drink, and eat their. There was even a point during the snowy seasons that my father's boss and coworkers dragged him along to do his first ever snowboarding and enjoy an outdoor spa bath in the snow afterwards. The way my father described his Japanese boss and some of his coworkers were very similar to Satoru: chill, wise, and fun to be around with. This was a treat of a video to watch and now that I'm working I wish I got to experience the salaryman night life in Japan once like Satoru and my dad.

A "salaryman" is any white collar worker for a medium to large company. So an engineer would be a salaryman. It's actually means a hard working white collar workers - it was mostly men but I would guess today you have female salaryman.

Wife and I are coming to Japan at the end of November for a couple of weeks -- to chill out and enjoy the Tokyo vibe! My first trip was a half-century ago in 1973, when I was lucky to have a summer Navy cruise break while in college. We're staying in Shinbashi this time, so we can walk to these eateries! We may just try out that corned beef/cheese/potato dish, and mention Japan By Food. Love your videos, and enjoyed Satoru's take on salaryman life. A couple of decades ago, I worked for a major Japanese company, and I knew that when I traveled to Japan, I would have to struggle to fight off jet lag -- while out drinking with company staff from the U.S. and Japan first night in Japan. But it was so much fun. Love the country, the people, the culture... and your adorable and oh-so-enjoyable videos (we've watched you for years, now). Dig in!
Satoru is a great guide to izakaya culture. I'd drink with him, any time.

All the salaryman looks tired and depressed, but when you really look closely at each one of them, many of them are fun-loving people who would go out of their way to help others in need (when you ask). I love drinking with salarymen in Japan, especially the Yurakucho and Shimbashi area.

Great video , just came back from three weeks in Japan and can't wait to get back there again Thanks for the insight into understanding the culture a little more. Now I see why there were so many restaurants and bars in Osaka and Kyoto.
Andy's in Yurakucho is such a relaxed place and those gyoza wings were amazing!!! Stopped by there in 2019 during the Rugby World Cup and had a blast talking Rugby with the main man himself Andy.

Ive been to Japan many times and Japan loves to drink after work .. but during work they are the most hardworking people i have seen. They worked long hours and do whatever it takes to complete the job.

This video alone has inspired me to check out hotels near Shimbashi and Yurakucho for my trip in 2024. Looks like good night dining/drinking options walkable from any hotel, plus easy train access to anywhere else in the city.

went Japan recently and discovered a hidden diner in Osaka, it's small and cozy, after about an hour there I can see the appeal of why salaryman likes to hangout at such places after a long day of work to cool down and chill before heading home.
