A new iron curtain in Europe? Finland bolsters border with Russia • FRANCE 24 English

The war in Ukraine has placed new emphasis on the security of nations bordering Russia, not least Finland, who has fought wars against its giant eastern neighbour in the past. Now, Finland is constructing a vast barbed-wire fence along the border, which Helsinki says is necessary to protect itself and monitor those crossing from Russia. France 24's Julien Sauvaget and Clovis Casali sent this report on what may be a new iron curtain forming in eastern Europe.

"A new iron curtain?" "A new Berlin wall?" Oh, it is so often forgotten, whenever the ominous "Berlin wall" is used to make comparisons to contemporary borders, that that was built to keep people in, not to keep people out, as in "we have to fence our people in to prevent them from running away". If this wall was built by Russia to prevent Russians from running, then it would be the same as the iron curtain.

✅ I gotta give it to Finland, it’s the 3rd best country in the world when it comes to quality of life. One of the crucial factors is your beneficial stance since WW2, like a bridge connecting West and East. But why did you decide to flush your 80 years neutrality down the toilet and join NATO like there’s no tomorrow? As far as I’m concerned, nobody in their right mind would like higher prices and taxes, increased tensions along the borders, Iskander missiles, hypersonic missiles and warships with nuclear weapons literally at arm's length from their own home. But Finland did, after 80 perfect years of neutrality. America and its NATO hawks seem to have thrown Finland straight to the front line. Well, as they say, "the worst is yet to come." ✅ Finland hasn’t been in NATO for 78 years and you had zero problems with the USSR post-WW2 or Russia since 1991 thanks to ‘finlandization’ which made it possible for you to become a capitalist country and have close ties with the West and neutral relationship with the USSR. Finland was very smart, realistic, determined and forward-looking back then, when it decided to stay neutral and root out anti-Soviet sentiment. It was a genius move. ✅ This quality’s gone to waste, unfortunately. The neutrality since WW2 was key to your successful relations with a big next door neighbour in the east. The consequences of your life-changing decision are gonna haunt you for the rest of your life. I hope you understand that.

One point that stood out for me was the man's recommendation that in 1940 he voted against the Moscow Peace treaty, obviously not trusting the Soviets. Yet he maintained peaceful relations with the Russians during his long period of governing. As in all things, an individual(as well as a Nation) may be viewed over time as experiencing a process of change. That Kekkonen was a unique individual is without doubt.

We have similar fences for deer and moose near crossing areas in our highways for pretty much the same reason, to direct the movement to designated areas so everything can be handled efficiently. The border is 1350km. No point for walls or fences militarily, we have been digging the fortifications into the bedrock for 80 years. The fortifications are already there. But following our example might be a good idea in other areas. Especially education, which is one of the cornerstones of a functioning society.
