We went to the North Korea-Russia border. What could go wrong? w/

Video on Drew's channel: • How I Got DETAINED Sne...
Hello everyone! I'm so glad to share this story with you. As you know, I am originally from Primorsky Krai, eastern Russia. I love my region but I never had the opportunity to explore it much. So in January, I got a message from ‪@drewbinsky‬, he told me that he wanted to visit Khasan, the village on China-North Korea-Russia tripoint, and Drew invited me to join him. I was worried, but agreed to take part in this adventure. Well, actually we didn’t get to Khasan because we were detained by the borders guards... but we still had a great time, exploring the Slavyanka town, old ships and North Korean boats!

I was coming back on foot from Mexico to The U.S. at the Tijuana / San Diego border. My friend who was Japanese got searched for half an hour. They took one look at me and waived me through customs, without needing to show my ID and Passport. This was because I'm a Tall / White / Blond Hair Guy. I couldn't believe this as they checked hundreds of peoples documents both i n front of me & behind me.

Great video Natasha and Drew. Brings back memories of visiting East Berlin and the new Czech republic only a few months after the Berlin wall came down. A strange time where we (me and two Spanish friends) were at the East German/Czech border. It was like being in a cold war movie. I miss those adventures.

The border between Spain and Gibraltar is the most interesting one I've experienced. There's an airport that has a runway that intersects the only road so it has to close when a plane lands like a railway crossing.

It’s in Norway nowadays, but I was told by my grandmother that it has been part of Sweden at times over the centuries as well. It’s just a small fishing village. Hope to visit there someday! 🇨🇦🙏🍻

As a German citizen I tried this too, in 2016. Back then we just ignored the blue warning sign (this thing should be red, not blue) and did even make it to the town. Soon after however, a border guard in a civil car showed up and asked us for our permissions to be there. Since we didn't have one we had to follow him to exactly the same building as in your video where we got instructed that what we did was unlawful. Luckily though, one guy of our group was a Russian police officer who managed to talk us out of this situation and so we didn't even have to pay any fine and could just continue driving back to Vladivostok. Quite of an adventure and I did manage to see the North Korean watch tower across the border.

It sure wasn't like that in the old days in Germany! Germany and Europe learned. I remember my amazement when, on a train from Berlin to Prague, our train crossed the Czech border and the only indication that we had crossed was that the railroad signs were now in another language. And this was the exact border whose dispute in 1938 (followed by the infamous Munich Pact between Germany, Italy, France and Britain) was really the starting point of World War II.

I left you a comment a year or two ago, telling you that you should be proud to be from such a unique and interesting place like Primorsky Krai. Vladivostock is truly one of the most interesting cities in the world, with its mountains, bridges and beautiful bays. Now that you have seen some more of it and its unique beauty, rejoice! Now you have to go to Sakhalin Island. There are amazing geysers there and the white Siberian tigers.

I live in the border city of Buffalo, NY, USA so I can be in Canada in a few minutes from my home. We have a choice of two bridges to cross over. Many tourists come here since we are 20 minutes from Niagara Falls. I look forward to your future adventures!

I absolutely loved this video. You have an very curious and warm-hearted way of composing videos, Natasha. About how you crop videos, how you emphasize things, how you narrate. I really want to go there once, you motivated alot! Drew, thanks for your philosophy on this one. I've travelled in Europe alot, far from any of your travel experiences, but I always had the same feeling as you: Being spontanous makes days richer and pays off. Also, that the world is alot more safer, than people often think. I love your attitude, man.

I like what Drew said though about the world being safer than we think. We get a lot of scaremongering from our own media which does the opposite of building connections and understanding between different peoples of the world who fundamentally are the same.

Back in 1986 I spent a day in China, travelling from Hong Kong via Macau. Coming from the UK it was something of a culture shock. On entry we had to pass through security manned by Red Guards who didn't seem very friendly. We were accompanied by a guide who watched our every move. Everything we saw seemed very old fashioned to us, it reminded me of life back in the forties and fifties. However looking back it was an experience I wouldn't have wanted to miss. I really enjoy your videos Natasha, and wish you well.

China was once like that. Nowadays foreigners can move there about freely and interact with the Chinese without having to be attended to by government minders. North Korea is still a Stalinist state trapped in a time warp in the 1950s.

There won't be any 'Red Guards' in 1986. The guide had to keep close watch because you are a stranger. If you were to do something improper, the guide would be in serious trouble. How would they know your real purpose there? Where general mistrusts is high, you will get proper borders.

@@kaiyuzheng7663 I travelled from Bejing to Hongkong within a group of a dozen mostly French tourists. Our "guide" as they call him, was very friendly and professional, spoke fluent French, even told us his first name was Bernard (a common French first name), told us he was in France with Chinese tourists. Entering the country was not a problem, usual passport/visa check by bored agents, but every time checking in a hotel, our passports were kept at the reception desk until we left the hotel. Rather unpleasant. My guess is that every data was checked and forwarded to some mysterious authority.

"Just go", I like that. It's true, when I go out in the desert I plan as far as bringing food, water, and keeping my vehicle in good repair. Beyond that, not over-planning is a good thing. If I don't find the landmark I'm looking for, there's always something else interesting that I find out there that makes the trip worth it.

I am at only 93 countries and i agree with Drew's slogan 'Just Go'. Great video about another adventure. Too bad you didn't get to the border that would have been interesting. I havent crossed many borders by car or train so i dont have many 'border' stories. I just have airport customs stories and fun landings stories. I landed at McMurdo Station, Antarctica to test a new ski system for a C-130 that was very exciting and amazingly cold.

I almost took an IT job with GHG to go to McMurdo, if I hadn't received a competing offer with substantially more pay, I would have gone just to say I did it; haha.
