A Look Back at JFK Jr.'s Shocking Plane Crash

It's been nearly 25 years since John F. Kennedy, Jr. died in a plane crash. The flight took off from Essex County Airport in New Jersey. Kennedy was piloting the aircraft heading to Martha's Vineyard for a family wedding. He became disoriented mid-flight and lost control, plunging into the Atlantic Ocean. The crash also killed his wife and her sister Lauren. Maureen Callahan, author of "Ask Not: The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed," says the flight was fraught with reckless behavior.

    Everybody always talks about JFK Jr’s death and how tragic it was and it was the loss of hope for the country and I totally get that and understand that completely. But what nobody talks about is the fact that two sisters on that plane as well. I feel bad for the Kennedys for losing JFK Jr of course, but I also feel terrible for mother who lost two daughters in one night. It’s strange how no one seems to talk about or mention that. Personally speaking, I feel that is just as if not more tragic.

    Way beyond his capabilities to fly that plane. Just because you can afford a plane doesn’t mean you’re qualified enough to fly. He didn’t have the ability to fly based on instrumentation. He only had visual flight training. Once it became dark he couldn’t tell up from down because he didn’t have training on instrument flying.

  • @ronaldlindeman6136
    @ronaldlindeman613619 күн бұрын

    Kennedy did not hold an instrument rating and therefore was only certified to fly under visual flight rules (VFR). At the time of the crash, the weather and light conditions were such that all basic landmarks were obscured, making visual flight challenging, although legally still permissible. Someone with an instrument rating volunteered (with pay and to get more hours in) to fly with him to where he wanted to go, but JFK jr declined.

I hate how the media portrayed her as this cold and angry person who never smiled and always wore black. I really feel for the Bessettes. One mother lost two daughters and a sister lost not only her baby sister, but her twin sister too. It’s sad that we don’t know a lot about Lauren. At least the book about Carolyn gives the reader a snapshot of who she was prior to being married to John. May they all continue to RIP.

    I thought Carolyn was so beautiful and classy. She did not deserve the lies and vitriol thrown at her. The gossip rags vilified this woman, and told the most outrageous lies about her. In truth, she was just a woman in love with a very famous man. I felt so bad for her mother losing both of her daughters at the same time. I think what clouded most of the sympathy for their mother were all the lawsuits and the millions of dollars she received after their deaths. No amount of money on earth could ever compensate for losing two daughters in such a tragic, horrific way. And I think of JFK Jr's sister, Caroline, who lost her father and brother in such a tragic way and then her mother. I hope both families have found some form of peace now.

    I've always been a Kennedy fan and during my pilot training before being a certified pilot, I learnt about the misfortune JFK JR had when he flew into IMC and I myself had a few lucky escapes and that's why I did my Instrument Rating and I recall flying in clouds after qualifying and being in a rate one turn to the left and feeling like I was turning right while being upside down and spared a moment to realise how frightened he and the passengers would have felt in that moment.

    It’s not giving much coverage because I believe it 100% on point there’s a better book out there by a New York award-winning author, Mrs. Callahan I believe her name is I don’t remember her first. I just ordered the book and reading it. It’s about all the Kennedy women, it has a great couple chapters on JFK, Junior and Carolyn. it is absolutely worth the read. I believe it’s called ass nut what you can do
