Hiker Dies After Collapsing in Grand Canyon National Park
A Texas man died in the Grand Canyon after being overcome in the heat during a hike. Writer Kevin Fedarko and photographer Pete McBride, know all about hiking in the Grand Canyon. They walked its entire length, a grueling 750-mile trek that took 14 months. The men tell Inside Edition they faced near-disaster many times. Fedarko's book about their exploits, "A Walk in the Park," is now a bestseller.

The best time to hike the grand canyon is in the early spring. The only weight in your backpack is water and food. A small tube of toothpaste will feel like a 100 pounds while hiking up to the rim.

People don't do their homework, they don't prepare and they don't tell people. And part of the homework is learning when to hike a trail.
How insensitive to report on a man’s tragic death and then in the same breath feature a book by self-promoting survivors of the same perilous terrain.

People really need to learn to not go hiking in the Grand canyon during the summer time. Even the rangers don't recommend it go during the fall or early spring
People still do not learn not to venture out in this extreme heat. You won’t know your own limitations until it’s too late.
Aint no way i can feel sorry for people who die over something they choose to not avoid
There is also another book called, “Death in the Grand Canyon.” I’ve backpacked in the Grand Canyon 3 times early November, March, and April. You can always layer up when it’s cold but you can’t avoid heat stroke in the warm months. Sad. He must of suffered tremendously. My sincere condolences.
I like learning my lessons the easy way. After reading the book ‘Death in Big Bend’ (TX), I knew I would never push my luck by hiking in an environment that’s trying to kill me.
Ah, i see! So this is a promo for the book

OK, I was just in Vegas and the temp soared to 117, guess what? I wasn’t stupid enough to go walking the strip! Hell, I’d rather be inside and not die!
Never underestimate the weather
At a certain age common sense should be present. It appears as time goes by, society has needed more warnings from not eating Tide pods to now having to warn those 18 years old and above to not hike in dangerous weather temperatures.
HINT: WHY didnt the neice refuse to take her uncle on that hike? I wd have refused to go and adamantly told him not to go, that it was dangerous etc. old people can b stubborn and refuse to recognize the danger.
Just turning 61 I’ve always just pushed through the pain but learning to back off pace myself listen to your body & be prepared it’s hard to admit you can’t go at everything like you were 30 😎🍻
Tragedy to book promotion. Didn’t see that coming
Why hike in this boiling temperature. Go hike during spring or fall.
My heart goes out to the people who loss their loved ones in the Grand Canyon. To be honest, it should be visited during the winter months
My condolences to all of the families. 💔💔
I am very sorry for the loss of your uncle. I am also very sorry this story somehow became a book promotion.

A 100 degrees on the Rim means 110+ at the river. A friend of mine is currently doing a 7 day catered rafting trip in the Canyon. I gave him a hard time for choosing to go in the Summer. I suggested that he get a spare pair of sunglasses. We'll see in a few days how it was.

I hiked Camel Back last summer and being a Texan I’m thinking I can endure then heat better. However accounting for being over weight and getting a late start in the day with temperatures reaching 116, I nearly died coming back down. Luckily a man named Scott who is called the Water Angel, was there that day and assisted me on my descent. Truly grateful for him and forever humbled by nature.
The thumbnail made it sound like it was the woman who died
as someone who has hiked the Rim to Rim to Rim hike in the Grand Canyon--I did not attempt to do this hike until literally the end of October. It was below freezing when we started at the top and it was still stinking hot in the canyon. I regularly go on 20+mile, 5K+ EG hikes and I am extremely careful about weather conditions ALWAYS.
98° at the rim gets to 122° at the river.
Where did they get water?
I really don’t understand why people go places like that with extremely dangerous weather.
I just can not imagine ever wanting to put myself through that.
Condolences for tragic loss… The heat at Grand Canyon is unforgiving…it’s easy to underestimate its wrath… Even a young person can go into heat exhaustion and stroke easily… A hike as simple as the hike to horse shoe bend can be harsh in the wrong time of the day…
When I workout outside and it in the high 90s or low 100s I split my workout up into two parts if working outside that way my body can rest and cool down.
I need to go and hike at death valley right now…🤔
Here in Surprise, AZ, I can barely make it out on errands on these 117 degree days!! Many people have already died in this state over this Summer, 2024...Sadness:(
0:52 uh Death Valley?
I'm older, granted, and in poor shape weight wise....when I go down to my garden its several steps down and across the lawn. and water my plants, which takes about an hour, I am exhausted and sometimes feel faint....we've had temps over 100 and very dry.....I can imagine what those hikers went thru.
Why on earth do people still proceed to hike in the Grand Canyon, after it's killed so many people??
Hiking in extremely dangerous heat, swimming with sharks, swimming with alligators… the list goes on! When will the 🐖 ever learn?
It’s also based on the TV show, I shouldn’t be alive
Who the heck goes into the desert on the hottest days of summer
They walked in the desert for 14 months straight no food no re-stock 👀🙆♂️😮💀How? How many battery for the camera did they take? Unless it was solar & what did they eat?
Hike smart and be in shape.
But he rest in peace in a place he loves to hike. May his spirit live free and forever to a beautiful place.
Video ends at 0:33. After that it's just auxiliary/secondary story, then it turns to a book ad
They've come close to death a few days into their hike, then it shows them walking on ledges inches from death??? You have the option to walk many feet away from the ledge, why risk it???
ok but imagine walking from LA to NY by walking alone, that would be alot of pain to struggle
I never went to the canyon but with the extreme heat in the summer, shouldn't people go during cooler months ?
I’ll never understand the mentality to hike in such heat! You take your chances period. Sadly a lot don’t come home.
Well I didn't even think you need to carry a lot to go to the Grand Canyon😮
You mean to tell me that a older looking man that looks like maybe he's 60,70 pounds overweight caught a heart attack trying to hike the Grand canyon? I'm shocked and shagrinned.
I'm not blaming the man who lost his life. BUT why didn't anyone in his family tell him not to go hiking in the heat? He's 69 and didn't look like he's in the best of shape.
Hiked it many times in the heat. Almost lost my life. Never again.
Keep the book.
Please don't hike in this type of weather, be safe and hydrated. Rest in peace.❤️🌹🛐🙏
That was a different hike. They hiked the length off trail. The Grand canyon trail is well marked. Most people think its easy because it a backwards trail. Start by hiking down & when people start hiking up then they realize how difficult it is. Majority of that trail was made for the Mules with Giant Steps
If you’re not capable of working in heat, don’t go hiking!!!
Never underestimate mother nature she will teach you harsh lessons in the blink of an eye.

Knowledge is a powerful tool.
He intentionally entered there. No one forced him in there. He knew the heat was intense at this time. Next story please.
Where did they think they were going?
A Texas man died due to willful ignorance (oops, I meant) heat stroke!
Why in the world would that dad have gone out there and taken his daughter with him. Come on, common sense folks.
Not sure if the Canyon had anything to do with it. I visited the Grand Canyon South Rim…3 years ago this time of the year. We drove from Phoenix..there the temperature was 110+ but once you drive north going towards the canyon..the altitude change. Long story short we were shorts and sneakers. Once we got to the canyon we needed a coat because it was 40-50 degrees and windy. I remember feeling so stupid to not have done my homework regarding the huge temperature drop. I believe he was not in shape for that type of terrain for sure.
Your own life is more precious than challenging the nature.
You're asking for it hiking in that desert in the extreme heat. Don't expect someone to come save you. That's your own mess to clean up
Smart niece
I will never understand how people can be so ignorant as to go hiking the Grand Canyon in severe heat! It just doesn't make sense, especially if you're a senior. People...where's your common sense? Please...PLEASE heed temp warnings and use common sense. My condolences to the family.
Why do hikers ignore heat?

I'm 70, live in Arizona and still go desert backpacking for days at a time. I completed the Arizona Trail (820 miles) in 2021. A couple of months ago I did a 20 mile 2 day hike up and over a 9000 foot peak along the Mexican Border. Age has little to do with getting outside. It's about 1)Being prepared 2) Using your wits 3)Paying attention (to everything).
thats so trgi im so sorry for His familly and theyre loss
People don't do their homework. Don't prepare. Don't keep people informed. People praise Aron Ralston as being a great outdoorsman. But the laundry list of rookie mistakes he made is shocking.
