a look at the Schlage Encode WiFi Deadbolt - Can it accept different cylinders?

I don’t go over any of the features really, there seem to be plenty of reviews on it out there. What WE really want to know is can we use different key cylinders in it, for instance if we wanted to use a high security or commercial key. Let’s see!
Also we have done a video on the Connect and switching out key cylinders here (they are practically the same though) • Can the Schlage Connec...

Nice Video. I know my Schlage FE595 cannot swap out cylinders due to oddball (proprietary) tailpiece. This one retails In Canada for CAD$ 349 (USD$ 288) whole the FE595 retails for CAD$ 164 (USD$ 135). So the extra CAD$185 (USD$ 152) gets you the WiFi feature without needing the hub, plus the ability to swap from a 5 pin to a 6 pin core. The FE595 is entry set (lever) and not a deadbolt.

A door lock that does WiFi is going to need more power. WiFi is a power hungry technology. A device that has a hub will likely need far less battery changes but give similar features. A lock that uses BLE(Bluetooth low energy) will likely perform similarly to a lock with a hub when it come to battery life but won't do remote unlock over the internet unless it has a BLE hub. In a power outage most BLE locks will work normally. Put a UPS(Uninterruptible power supply) on your modem and router. The gateway too if you have one to eliminate power outage issues. I like home automation but have not found the perfect connected lock. I will probably build one eventually using commercial access control and DIY parts.

@@selock IMHO The cost of that service should be about $3 per year given the cost of cloud servers. It takes virtually nothing to run that service. There is no reason the service for a hub connected to the cloud would cost significantly more then a lock connected to the cloud. The difference in cost is likely better customer service and marketing dollars.

The $10 a month depends on the hub you are using. Wink is the only one i know of that requires a monthly subscription. The Schlage connect operates on Z-Wave. There are plenty of Z wave options that are free like SmartThings

Schlage Sense - Uses Z-Wave or Zigby (two differing technologies) to integrate with older home automation systems or when your in a building flooded with wifi and you're having performance problems where wifi is practically unusable. Schlage Encode - Schalge seems to have designed this for AirBNB or landords of rentals. It works over wifi, and does initial paring over Bluetooth. No hub needed. No Zigby or Z-Wave. Both take standard KIK/KIL cylinders, you need to swap the tailpiece over which offers high security options like Abus or Abloy. No you can't use it on the old Schlage inch and a half holes you need to bore those out to 2 inch standard holes. I believe the spacer if for people who want Primus thats why they're cast that way. Actually I should call allegion. I've installed 10 in the last few weeks.

The Connect doesn't charge any use fees. Could be the hub side where charges are being applied. Connect has a Zamak rim cylinder that houses a KIK cylinder, similar to the built in one shown in the video. The rim cylinder has grooves at 5 and 11 that match up with small rails in the housing. Using a standard rim cylinder would require adding the grooves on a 1.125" rim cylinder with a mill or a Dremel. 6 pin KIKs seem to work fine if you re-use the tailpiece. It is a bit long, so shortening it is an option. The tailpiece is 5.5mm x 2.0mm. Overall length of the body + tailpiece is about 68.0mm (measured from the front of the bible, not the plug face, which varies as per the video.) If you really want to get picky you can install a 3.0mm spacer made from the body of a cheap ball point pen to take up the gap around the screw. Connect doesn't seem to have the copper spacer on the KIK cylinder, or need it.

The "bump" on the tailpiece seems to be there to hang up in the bolt during install so it doesn't easily fall on the ground. Easy for a novice at installing deadbolts, but it isn't needed for anything else.

@@selock the reason is longevity of zinc in harsh envrionments also price, you can Houdini a Kwikset down thats been near a pool for a decade and it'll work again. Not so with brass. Look into the rationale behind those dogshit terrible swing arm deadbolts from the 90s. It's because Lowe's wanted a $1 cheaper price per unit and thats how Schlage cut corners. Edit: No one lubricates their locks, thats why we're seeing Zinc. Chlorine absolutely kills the natural lubricity of brass.
