Charles Igboeli yes, I do.... I don’t see what that has to do with this though? Parents are there for guidance and discipline. Pure control is not healthy and fails to consider that the child is a human with free will. Control suppresses free will until rebellion occurs. Guidance and discipline shape free will in ways that make the child a valuable member of society. Big difference, in my experience

As someone who was not allowed to date in high school with very strict and controlling parents, you cannot and will not stop your daughter from dating. The more you control, the more they will resent you, and keep secrets from you. All that will happen is that you’ll have a strained relationship with your children. They’ll go behind your back and you’ll be clueless. At the people that are blaming the parents: It was not the parent’s fault and shame on you for thinking so ignorantly. The guy is at fault, period.

What you wrote in your comment Amy- has absolutely nothing to do with this story. Her parents weren't telling her not to date her boyfriend, because they were being too strict. They were telling her not to date him, because they could clearly see, that he had some serious mental issues. He was totally controlling her and would go back and forth with bad words/nice words. Her parents were just trying to protect her, from the unstable boyfriend- now she is dead. I'm sorry that your parents were so strict on you, but I do disagree with what you wrote about. "Girls will just date whoever they want to and parents can't do a darn thing about it". That is so totally uncool- because your parents just may have saved your life. You should heed their advice- rebellion usually leads to something bad!!

I have come acrossed in my romantic live with a long string of fake men who misrepresent themselves as thoughtful and just good men. However, the mask comes off sometimes is quick, or after a while where I have invested myself the true colors come out. I truly have not met a good partner. I don't have expetations because everything its a give and take I am a flawed human being, who is self reflective and self aware of my flaws, shortcomings, just treat me like I treat you. And yes I dont think there are good truthful guys out there. I have been married, divorced and dated plenty but men have not disappointed in how predictable their thin varnish falls apart.

It's not a case of playing games. The abuser (in my case a male, but can be female as well) manipulates the victim, telling them how special and perfect they are then turning around and calling them foul names; belittling the victim. It happens in such a way that the victim doesn't realise just how badly they are being treated. The abuser has a way of charming their way into lives and leaving it damaged. It's extremely difficult to understand why they wouldn't just leave, unless one has been in a relationship like this.

I was in a similar relationship at 20-21. I'm glad I was old enough to recognize the signs, but I stayed longer than I should have. Always upset with me for being out too late, out with certain friends, accusing me of cheating, judging what I wore but asking me to dress inappropriately for certain events, always saying the most awful things when we argued and then returning and saying he loved me and wanted to start a family. I ended it when I told him he was suffocating me and he responded with "You should suffocate yourself. The world would be better off." I feel so bad for the women and young girls who don't know how to get out of those relationships. Men also experience this abuse too. I hope can provide my children with the tools they need to recognize unhealthy relationships and leave them behind.

They are both true. It helps people understand how her parents first allowed them to see each other. But had it been my child and I saw all those red flags, I would have had a formal meeting at the school and have him threatened with expulsion from the football team because usually they have to keep a certain GPA and adhere to a decent code of conduct then I would have gotten a restraining order so he could not go to her work, text message her, call her, or talk with her at school. If necessary I would pull her out of school for online learning, maybe let her go to home room class so she could continue to cheer. But I don't blame the parents at all teenagers are alot of drama and I agree with the mom the more you tell them "no" the more they want to do something. Kate wrote this

They also said Knoxville is "rural" and it's definitely not. It's not some small, rural, hick community. If they want to find a rural area of Tennessee, they could go up the road to Strawberry Plains. Knoxville is a pretty normal area and it's a very popular place for people to move into from other states.

But why comment saying something from the outside looking in?? And as a teenager, if your parents say no you cant date a senior. They are just going to gon behind your back and close off all communication so your method wouldn't of solved anything. The parents are not at fault. His parents are not at fault. The poor girl who was killed is not at fault. He is the only one at fault. He is a psychopath who didnt care.

Got mad at me any time I accidentally mentioned anything relating to my age or being in high school while we were out on dates. Also wouldn’t listen when I told him to stop and would most often perform sexual acts upon me through restraint and force. When you’re in these kinds of relationships, the emotional manipulations can make it very difficult to see clearly and put you in a state of denial. Very sorry for the parents of this girl that they lost her at such a young age. Truly a tragedy.

I finished watching the 20/20. The story is so sad because Emma seemed like the girl who was happy and had a bright future ahead of her. If she was alive today, she would have been a cheerleader at Tennessee or any other university what so ever. I hope Emma's story serves as a wake up call to those who are in a relationship where there is no way out. My heart goes out to her family and friends.

So very sad! I know of 4 different women/girls who have guys acting like this with them. They won't listen to anyone. I fear for them. I can only helplessly watch the train wreck in slow motion. I see the guys isolating them from their friends. It's heartbreaking.

It's really hard to be with someone who have a narcissistic personality because they will be in control with your life. The signs are pretty obvious that she needs to get away from him but sadly she just shrugged it off. Parents should have taken her way from him because their relationship is not healthy at all.

People start as good then start pushing little boundaries and when constantly forgiven they push higher boundaries. Manipulate , make a person feel guilty for shit for things they didn’t even do , made out to be the bad person. So sad.

dating young isn't a bad thing. I had my first boyfriend at 14. I actually learned a lot from it. before that I had a "boyfriend" in 3rd grade. the usual 3rd grade teasing each other and taking each others stuff. It's not like all 14 year olds are having sex, it's just dating. you care about them, talk to them, hug, kiss, and go on little dates.
