A DKOldies Rejected PS2: Unsticking a stuck disc drive

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

On this video we are kicking off the DKOldies series with this 39001 PS2. As shown in the unboxing video, this PS2 had an issue with the disc drive being stuck. Not wanting to put the time on fixing this, it was kicked to the curb for me to purchase and repair. Come along as I show how easy it is to recondition the drive and make a sticky disc drive not sticky anymore!

I got a "junk" ps2 from dkoldies that sounded like it had a marble rattling around in it. It was the fuse. Popped it back in and worked fine.

The lot I'm featuring now about half worked. The others are just lasers. Nothing major. I bought another lot from them a couple weeks ago. Let's just say that lot should make good content 😁 They also threw in 3 PS2 slims for free.

From my experience, a stuck disc drive is usually from it being dirty. Sometimes the tray comes off it's track or very rarely, a piece of the tray breaks off. It's more common for the 50001 disc drives to break as Sony went extra cheap with the plastic.

I've found that too. I did a disc drive (I think I have a video of it) where the track was completely destroyed. Needless to say I replaced it lol. I forget what model that was though.

Thank you for the video, was wondering how to get the drive belt cover off and this helped. Also F YOU Sony for putting that screw on the underside and moving the CMOS battery to the motherboard instead of the side holder.

my favorite is a 30001 as well. a big, fat, made in japan 30001. i didn't get a ps2 until the 39001, and i still have that very 39001 packed away in it original box. but i daily a thrifted 30001. 3.99 for the unit, with the network adapter. probably a controller too. these things were stacked up at thrifts in 2010 era.

It's a shame those days are gone. I didn't get into thrifting and console repair until the pandemic so I kind of missed the boat there lol.

@@titanrepairs it was a very fun time. records, cds, blank cassettes, old games, old consoles, old hi-fi, any flavour of crt tv you wanted... for stupid cheap prices.

@@mark902 Sometimes I see hi-fi and such come through for a cheap price. I got a whole Zip drive kit recently for only a few bucks (the drive, cables, documentation and a few blank discs in the original box! No use for it but I do want to hook it up and play around on and old computer). I also got a 5.1 surround sound receiver a few months ago for 25 bucks. And what worked out is someone in my complex threw out Samsung speakers. My wife isn't happy with the boom booms especially when I play Helldivers :D But yeah, good deals are harder to come by than when I started thrifting in 2020. Games at my local Goodwill are still only a few bucks and I've gotten some absolute gems that have value, but they've been throwing the good stuff online lately which sucks.

@@titanrepairs it does suck in comparison, but you can still get some gems. i quit going for a while because i was just so fed up with the extreme prices. but recently i've felt compelled. last week i found a radeon x600 pro and a cd maxi single. both for four bucks. that was a treat. a boxed zip drive would be tempting, if only for the fact that i never experienced them. i think now might be the golden age for old pc components. shhhh!

Hello, I have a question about the Video do I have to do all the following to fix the disc driver, because my hands are very hard on the specific parts and afraid to break it. Can’t I just work on the disc directly without going through all the procedures?

I take it you have a stuck disc drive? The method I do in my videos is just the way I do it that I found works best through trial and error and experimentation through the many disc drives I've worked on (not just PS2 drives). I find the best way is to do a full teardown, clean and rebuild. But you have to work in your own comfort level. When I first started out I didn't do full teardowns until I got comfortable. I would say if you are afraid of breaking something, try boiling the belt and cleaning the gears. If that doesn't work then try lubricating the disc tray. I've fixed a few drives early on that way (and a lot of people in the retro gaming community do that) but I personally advise against it just because dirt can get stuck over time. But short term it can get you where you need to go 🙂

I will when I come across one with a broken port! But it'll also be a quick video lol. Literally unscrewing the two screws, unplugging it and plugging in the new one. Super simple 🙂

From my experience it sounds like your laser is on its way out. Aside from stuck disc drives, lasers are the other top repair I do on PS2s. Especially 30000 and 39000 series models. Good news is it's not too hard to do and the lasers are cheap and easy to find. But my personal PS2 had this happen many many years ago. It started with long load times, then disc read errors on one type of game disc (for me it was blue back discs) then the other disc type. I replaced my laser about 4 years ago and it's been great ever since.

@@jessejones1783Unfortunately a lot of game stores just do preliminary testing and cleaning to make sure it works but that's about it. I was at my local retro store a few months ago and the consoles they had out didn't even look like they got wiped down. Which was weird because they clean all game discs that go on the shelf. If you bought it from a retro game store, maybe you can talk to them say that it's taking a long time to load. Any retro store that cares about their reputation will exchange it for you. If not, I have a video where I replaced the laser if you want to take on the task. It's not hard. You'll need a soldering iron though but you don't need a fancy one. A 5 dollar one from Harbor Freight should be good. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4elxLCIftaTkaQ.htmlsi=DAlWy6U1zsNd29V4&t=1914 I'm sorry. I'm not taking online repairs just yet. Only local at the moment. I am working on it though so a lot is happening on the back end here. Just not far along enough yet where I've made any announcements. I'll make announcements about taking online repairs when I have a more definite timeline :)
