swapped my 35v 33uF cap with a 50v 100uF cap and it started putting out 12v at the rails again. Thanks for the video!

Funny, my (currently) non-working PS2 has the same model-number power supply, and I had the exact same two caps fail on mine as well. Have some replacements coming in the mail. Great video, cheers!

Thanks! And yeah, I've had quite a few power supplies and literally the same capacitors. It seems I always get bad power supplies on the 39001 model.

Thank youuuu so soo much for this video I couldn't tell the caps were bad because off the board they still showed good on MF but I didn't have a esr reader like you . Because of this video I used 2 bad psu to make 1 good 1 and bring a dead ps2 back to life to go to a new home 🎉

That's awesome! I'm glad it helped! In my experience with caps, there usually aren't obvious signs of failure. Especially with smaller ones. That ESR meter I use was recommended by a viewer. It was about 60 bucks on Amazon and has been a lifesaver!

Thanks for the kind words 🙏 it's funny. Growing up and even to a degree in my adulthood I've been self conscious about my voice. Even though I had a college professor say I had a radio voice I never thought it was good for video and whatnot. So thanks for the boost to my ego a bit today 😁 And you got this! Welcome to the hobby! I'm glad the video helped 🙂 I order mine through digikey.com but I've used mouser.com too. Both are great suppliers. I usually only buy the ones made by Nichicon, Rubycon or Panasonic. When it comes to capacitors you don't want to buy no branded ones as I've read from others experience on forums they don't last. For this project you'll want through hole electrolytic capacitors but you'll want to match the values (voltage and capacitance in farads). If you ever have issues finding the correct voltage on a capacitor, you can always go up on voltage but the capacitance value must match (for example if the original is 15v 2000uf but it isn't available you can use like a 19v 2000uf). Sorry I don't have a specific list for you. I generally don't in my videos as sometimes depending on revisions the values may or may not be different. I basically try to force anyone following along at home to confirm what they need before placing an order 😊

You can use kim wipes on top of the parts on the pc board that you want to clean ,then brush it with alcohol.The flux will be absorb by the kim wipes and you'll be happy with the results..I soldered alot per NASA spec during my younger days...

I had the same issue. One day the red light was on, the next day it was off. So, being lazy, I bought a new power board and still have no luck at powering it on. I don't have any meters to use to diagnose. I'm not sure what else I can do at this point.

Great video! I have a PS2 fat that won't power on. Went through all your steps and tested the switch and the power board with a multimeter. Both have power and appear to be good. What's the next thing to check? Appreciate any advice on next steps!

Next thing I would check are fuses on the motherboard. The one on the circuit with the power button has a tendency to blow. That's the other common thing I've run into before with a no power situation. You can find guides online on where they're located for your motherboard. They generally start with PS on the board. I want to say there's something like 15 I think that need to be tested for continuity? I wish I had a video of this because it's another common thing. But luck would have it I haven't run into it since I got more serious about KZread 😐

It's a soldering/desoldering station. It has a desoldering gun and a soldering iron in one. It makes things much easier but it isn't perfect. Sometimes I do still have solder left behind which takes time to get out. But the majority of the time it works well. I like it but I did have to recently replace the soldering iron of it. Which it wasn't bad to replace. I can't compare it to a higher end desoldering gun since I have no experience but I'm overall happy with it and think it's a good hobbyist machine considering the price to performance. The model is the Aoyue 701A++. I got it on Amazon but doesn't appear to be available anymore. There's other similar ones for sale from other companies too but can't say if they're good or not or comparable since I don't have experience with them 🙂 I'll have to do a video one day on it when I run slow on projects lol.

Thank you for the video. I am trying to fix my daughters PS2 SCPH-39001 that would not turn on any more. I purchased a new power supply PCB. I tested the output DC voltage as per your video, got 12.6 from both + sockets. Installed pcb, added power. No lights just an electrical squeal noise. Any thoughts what I may need to buy now? This 27uF 35V capacitor is hard to find. Can some alternative capacitance be used?

No. Capacitance must match the old one. You can go higher on the voltage though. So a 27uF 35v can be a 27uF 50v for example.

Can you but any power board on a ps2 or does it have to be specific

You'll have to match it up to the power supply you have. Some PS2s have the connection to the motherboard in a different place. It depends on the model PS2 you have. Also, if your country uses 110v you need a board in that voltage. If your country uses 220v you obviously need that. As for the quality of replacements, I don't know if they're on par with the OEMs. The cheap Chinese ones may not use quality components. I just don't know. It's why I rebuild them. That and it's cheaper to rebuild them 😊

Hello there! The yellow stuff is rosin flux paste. The soldering station I use is called the Aoyue Int701A++. It has a soldering iron and desoldering gun in one unit. I like it. For its price point it's a good value for a hobbyist. When I'm slow on projects I'm planning on doing a video on it. The spray bottles are just isopropyl alcohol. One has 70% and the other has 91%. I generally use the 91% to clean boards because it dries quicker. So nothing fancy 🙂

I charge like a mechanic and do the parts and labor model. Depending on how much the laser is I'd say 50-60 give or take. Unfortunately though I'm not yet set up and ready to take online orders. It is in the pipeline. No timeline yet though when I will be ready. I've just been doing repairs for customers local to me right now.

@@axcc I talked to my dad and the disc issueds might be board level too, which... oof It does play games off HDL fine so at least it's something isolated if that's the case My fear is that it scratches the discs when trying to read them, it obliterated my Persona 3 disc in just a couple months

My PS2 isn't functioning, and despite my limited knowledge, I attempted a fix. I opened and cleaned it, but unfortunately, that didn't solve the issue. After watching some online tutorials, I'm considering purchasing a new power supply to replace it myself. However, I'm uncertain about what steps to take next if that doesn't resolve the problem. What could be another potential reason for the issue?

Somebody else asked this today so I hope my reply to them can be helpful. It could be a fuse on the motherboard. The one on the power switch circuit has a tendency to blow on some models. See the other comment I responded to 🙂 But I'd test the power supply with a multimeter like I did in this video first. You want to find the fault first. Doing the parts cannon just is a waste of money IMO.

Have a 5000 fat model, it has its red light and when power button is pressed the light goes on green for half a second then returns to red without the PS2 starting up ? Anyone have any ideas, im trying to find a faulty fuse right now. Power supply should be good. Could be a motherboard issue.

Faulty fuse would probably not have any lights coming on at all, so I don't think it's the fuse. If you always have lights on, it may not be the power supply at all.

@@brs293 I bridged the fuse with solder and it now powers on. So yes... It was the fuse. But now it's not displaying anything.

I have a Japanese PS2 midnight black, 390001RC, it turns on but only for a second then goes off. I change the on & off switch with another USA PS2 350001. But the same thing happens .

It's likely not the switch. I'd start by checking the fuses on the motherboard with a multimeter. I haven't run into this issue in a while but I've had to replace the fuse on the power switch circuit a few times. But first you'll want to check the ribbon cable from the power switch to the motherboard for damage. If that's all good check the fuses.
