Thank you for the video, this help me big time, one of the springs fell out when I was working on the drive, the one with a red line through the screw, appreciate it!
I'm glad it helped! Those springs can definitely be annoying.
Parts of that PSU could be salvaged or replaced, I'm surprised you didn't try to remove and clean with IPA. That would be interesting
I know this is an old video but I was hoping for some expert advice.. I have a 30001R that I've owned since it was new. It was sitting for many years collecting dust and I decided to dig it up for nostalgia sake. Wouldn't turn on, replaced some power supply caps and it fired up today for the first time in 20 years. It is displaying an odd behavior with the disc drive. When you put a disc in, it makes two click sounds...then a pause... then two click sounds....then a pause... all while the disc is still spinning It does this over and over, before the disc stops spinning all together. But here's the weird part: if you leave it alone long enough, the disc will randomly start spinning and the game will start up just fine. The only reason I found out is because I left it running while I was searching google LOL. After the clicks and the disc stops spinning, it takes about 45-60 seconds of waiting and then it starts spinning again and plays the game normally. So far I have cleaned the disc, cleaned the laser lens, and adjusted the pots on the laser. I just ordered a new laser but it's coming from China so it will be awhile. Have you ever experienced anything like this, or have any advice on what would cause such an odd behavior? Subscribed and liked, thanks!
Thanks for the like and subscribe! Good thing right now about me being a smaller creator is I can keep up with comments on old videos :) Your issue how you describe it, no. I've never had it start spinning the disc again. Normally it runs through a cycle of reading the disc and I'll get the infamous "Disc Read Error" or sometimes a red screen that says to insert a PlayStation disc. The general symptoms you describe though, yes. All the time. What those clicks are is the laser lens moving up and down trying to focus on the disc. So the laser I would say based on what you describe is the issue. Especially since it is the 30001R model which I run into laser issues all the time. But the starting back up again has me stumped lol. Though when I get a 30001R in with a laser issue I may try to duplicate your issue. Cleaning the disc and laser are good areas to start. Adjusting the pots I don't do anymore. I've never had it work. To properly do it you need an oscilloscope. And even then with the parts availability and how cheap the lasers are, it's just easier to replace the laser. Here's another thing you can try while waiting for the laser. When you boot up your PS2, on the main screen, hit triangle. You'll see the information about the console (like model number and whatnot). On console, hit triangle again and you'll see an option for "Diagnosis". Turn that on. Then go to the Browser and put the disc in and see what happens. If it works you'll have to do that every time you boot. According to forums back in the day, it makes it focus the laser beam better. Don't know if that's what it actually does. I just remember having mixed success with it on my 30001 20some years ago until it completely gave out :) Hope this all helps!
Funny, my (currently) non-working PS2 has the same model-number power supply, and I had the exact same two caps fail on mine as well. Have some replacements coming in the mail. Great video, cheers!
Thanks! And yeah, I've had quite a few power supplies and literally the same capacitors. It seems I always get bad power supplies on the 39001 model.
la altura del que sujeta el CD spindle pueda estar o muy alta o muy baja o necesita regular mas el potenciometro y por ultimo algun capacitor desvalorizado q manda señal al lector
How do you get the disc tray back in? When i close it the spindle come up and hits the back of the tray.
Been there my first couple times opening a disc drive. It's frustrating. Give this a try. That white plastic piece that moves the laser sled up and down also guides the disc tray in and out (underneath the tray you'll see channels). Push it to the right as you're pushing the tray back in. It should go into the correct groove. Might take a couple attempts to figure it out :)
27:29 saved my disc drive for some reason I was looking and twiddle the but around then pin that but came out this part hugely helped me putting it back the part and trouble shooting my problem 👍👍
Glad it helped! And don't worry, there was quite a bit of staring off camera as well as footage left on the cutting room floor on my end trying to figure out the best way to put it all back together. They're complicated drives that need patience to service for sure. One piece is askew and the whole thing doesn't work.
For that sticking cover release button I use food grade silicone spray. Leaves no residue and does not collect dirt.
Thanks for the tip! I may have to give that a try. I've been getting a lot of cool tips and tricks in the comments so I'd like to start incorporating commenters ideas in my videos 🙂
Hahahha the black in the console and the red on other side
I'm aware of the error. I have a link to an updated video in the description.
What were the initial symptoms? Mine has started to sound like the motor is beginning to strain and the suction is reduced.
you have to warm her up first to get her off
Giggity
Dkoldies wouldn't have rejected that , if they couldn't fix it , they would use it for parts , good click bait though
Except they did. I literally won an auction of a box of consoles from their eBay store. I also did an unboxing video of it and showed the shipping label from them 😉
also you are turning that pot like hell, you should do 1-2 degrees at time, avoid those turning the pot that more than that. Yo can break those Chinese knock off lasers on a whim.
Hmm. Didn't think I turned it that much. Thanks for the tip! I'll do it less next time 😊
did you checked the fuses?
No. Which fuses? I'll check them in the follow up video.
@@titanrepairs check your model and look the schematics, fuses are labeled PS and literally signaled with an arrow. I'm sure the official manual will show them. MAn those lasers are easy to calibrate or broken, chinese copies are terrible (wont las more than 3 months without need to recalibrate...) I don' think an oscilloscope would solve the issue. Keep the console and buy an ODE for it to put the games on micro SDs directly, I think xstation is the name. Also make sure, bellow the board if there are previously installed modchips. I've seen them go bad on their own or the installation messing after decades because of a badly soldered cable and they wont even read official disks
Thanks for the info! Very helpful ☺️ I'll look into the ODE and xstation. Maybe I can mod it and sell it that way.
22:00 watch out when you let the screwdriver slip inside the screwhead, tiny metal shavings are jumping off and they can short circuit chips if they happen to fall just right (ask me how i know this :p )
Thanks for the tip! I didn't even give it any thought. But now I will. Also, good eye! I didn't think the ancient camera I film with picked up details that fine. Or my eye sight is going in my age and didn't notice in editing lol.
my favorite is a 30001 as well. a big, fat, made in japan 30001. i didn't get a ps2 until the 39001, and i still have that very 39001 packed away in it original box. but i daily a thrifted 30001. 3.99 for the unit, with the network adapter. probably a controller too. these things were stacked up at thrifts in 2010 era.
It's a shame those days are gone. I didn't get into thrifting and console repair until the pandemic so I kind of missed the boat there lol.
@@titanrepairs it was a very fun time. records, cds, blank cassettes, old games, old consoles, old hi-fi, any flavour of crt tv you wanted... for stupid cheap prices.
@@mark902 Sometimes I see hi-fi and such come through for a cheap price. I got a whole Zip drive kit recently for only a few bucks (the drive, cables, documentation and a few blank discs in the original box! No use for it but I do want to hook it up and play around on and old computer). I also got a 5.1 surround sound receiver a few months ago for 25 bucks. And what worked out is someone in my complex threw out Samsung speakers. My wife isn't happy with the boom booms especially when I play Helldivers :D But yeah, good deals are harder to come by than when I started thrifting in 2020. Games at my local Goodwill are still only a few bucks and I've gotten some absolute gems that have value, but they've been throwing the good stuff online lately which sucks.
@@titanrepairs it does suck in comparison, but you can still get some gems. i quit going for a while because i was just so fed up with the extreme prices. but recently i've felt compelled. last week i found a radeon x600 pro and a cd maxi single. both for four bucks. that was a treat. a boxed zip drive would be tempting, if only for the fact that i never experienced them. i think now might be the golden age for old pc components. shhhh!
I usually don't completely strip down force feeder disc drives as they are annoying the put back together but this one needed it.
I usually don't either. But seeing the state of the PS3 as a whole I knew this was gonna be a thing. I didn't realize how long this took me until I realized this video was going to be over an hour. And that's paring it down lol. But this was the furthest I've ever taken it. Now that I understand how the drive works and is put together, after a couple more it should be easy peasy.
@@titanrepairs Except Sony tends to have multiple variations of their parts. If one company they are working with decides to increase their price or can no longer make that part, they go with someone else. And since you can't copy another product 1:1, the design is tweaked. Sometimes the parts are still compatible but most of the time they are not in my experience.
@@GoodVibeCollecting that's pretty much my experience too. And it stinks too because parts swapping is difficult. If I don't have a spare drive lying around to salvage I'm boned. It's why I don't throw out anything lol.
does anyone have a definative answer , will a missing, or in my case a ripped fingerprint sensor make the phone dead , will not do anything. Anyone?
In my first video I ripped the finger print cable while changing the charging port. I used the phone for a couple weeks no problem with that cable ripped until I got a new one. So in my experience no it shouldn't make the phone dead.
I have the same power supply it turn on then shuts off
What are the numbers on the capisitors need to know thanks
I don't keep a list. They'll be different from power supply model to power supply model. I also usually mention the values in my videos at least the ones I replace. Otherwise the values are on the capacitors themselves. When ordering replacements you just have to match the values.
Used tape on a ps2 blue disc it worked does that mean I need to replace the lazer
Your laser should be fine. My guess is the disc drive magnet was slipping on the disc causing your issue. Instead of putting the tape on the magnet like I did in the video, you just put it on the disc. Same theory same result. A more permanent fix is to open it up and put the tape on the disc drive magnet. Also saves you from taping all your discs :)
This is why you be better off buying a combo package from a private seller dosn't matter what company the don't refurb console's been proven time and time again
My ps2 fat doesn't make noise just can't play blue back disc
That's going to be a laser issue. It starts with the blue back disks and eventually will not read any discs. I see it all the time and it even happened to my fat.
In future when doing informative videos, it might pay to keep your head out of the video so we can see what you are doing.
Thanks for the feedback! Agreed 100%. I had issues in my earlier videos like this one trying to figure out camera angles and whatnot so my fat head got in the way too much lol. It's less of an issue now but I need an overhead camera system but it's just not in the budget right now.
I followed this helpful video. However now neither my NEW charging port nor my old one will work. The old one worked but was finnicky. Now neither work at all and I cant figure out the issue. It appears to be seated. And the black and white leads are snapped on. Anyone have ideas?
Thank youuuu so soo much for this video I couldn't tell the caps were bad because off the board they still showed good on MF but I didn't have a esr reader like you . Because of this video I used 2 bad psu to make 1 good 1 and bring a dead ps2 back to life to go to a new home 🎉
That's awesome! I'm glad it helped! In my experience with caps, there usually aren't obvious signs of failure. Especially with smaller ones. That ESR meter I use was recommended by a viewer. It was about 60 bucks on Amazon and has been a lifesaver!
Been watching a lot of video’s on PS3 controllers lately. Been looking at trying to find new OEM controllers or used OEM and fixing them up. This Motherboard looks quite a bit different than the other’s I’ve seen… Is this an OEM controller? And if so why does MOBO look so different?
Yeah. It is an OEM controller. Through the generation there were quite a few revisions. Some minor and some more major. This video is a bit older so if I remember right this is a later revision (maybe the last revision?). I think it was the A2 version.
Would you happen to know where one could get the ribbon cables for these things. I took mine apart and the ribbon cable that, I believe, operates the motor (the 9 pin ribbon cable), the blue backing thing came off and the ribbon cable seems kind of weird so, I just stuck it back in and put the blue backing piece in separately to make it tight but now the motor doesn't want to work and I'm wondering if the ribbon cable is broken inside or something or if the contacts might be screwed up enough that it isn't making a good connection. So, I'd like to see if I can just get a new ribbon cable for it.
Those ribbon cables are annoying. I used to break the blue piece off all the time. If the piece isn't in just right it won't have a good connection. They're pretty easy to find. I've gotten them mostly on eBay when I've needed them. You may be able to find them on Amazon too. Mouser and Digikey will probably have them too but if you're new to ordering parts it can be overwhelming on those sites lol. Plus when you add in shipping it may cost more than just buying off eBay.
@@titanrepairs Alright, thank you for your reply and your suggestions. And, great tutorial by the way. Very thorough.
And forgot to replace "c mos"🎉
It was replaced. I always replace them no matter if it's a PS2, PS3 or PS4. This video subject was the disc drive so that's what I recorded.
Hey Titan! Consider replacing all the capacitors on your PS1, I just replaced all 16 capacitors on my PSOne and the thing now reads discs! before this, no matter how much I tried to dial in the ohms on the potentiometer it wouldn't read discs because that wasn't the fault, I had dead capacitors! If you have experience with a hot air station and soldering iron please look into doing this with this console, don't shelve it yet! Also I'm noticing no one in this comment section has brought this up. We are easy to blame the lasers when it's usually not the culprit! Remember these consoles are 25+ years old and capacitors are the first thing to fail! I had to share this knowledge with you! I hope you come back to this console and try this out, I got my kit from Console5 website. the pack is less than $10 bucks! give it a try! I will be looking out for updates on your channel! Good luck my friend!

OMG 😳 I had the same problem as you at first I thought I had a dud laser from AliExpress so I bought another one and it's still having the same problem. I honestly thought it was the gears ⚙️ but the gears don't match the knock off. I honestly gave up and sold it for parts and moved on. I think 🤔 it has to do with the motherboard not recognizing the new part
Oh man, I used to have to buy a new Dualshock 3 every 12-18 months because this would happen and I never knew why. I could open up my controllers to clean them, but that never fixed them so I started having to dump them. Now that I know this, I can at least keep the ones I have.
They aren't too bad to work on when you get used to them. Treat them with love and they'll last a long time! And a new battery every several years lol. But yeah, this one in the video was kind of an exception where a clean got it working. In my experience it's never just a clean but the pads too.
All your spare psus prob work if you test them correctly... ffs lol
I'm aware there is an error in this video. It's why I called it out in the description and provided a link to an updated video.
Double sided 3M mounting tape works wonders on the front foam piece. It's thicker than electrical tape and pretty much prevents the random button press issue from ever happening again. Late model PS2 controllers have this issue as well but it's not nearly as common.
Didn't think of that. I have a couple more DS3s that need fixing. I may just have to give the 3m tape a try!
Very much appreciate the tips and tricks in this video!
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
The game store I repair for has mountains of these controllers that have been piling up. Pretty much been given up on. We couldn’t figure them out. I just got around to trying this. So far I am 6 for 6 on fixing the ghosting issues!!! They work perfectly! I got 2 big boxes of those “broken” controllers still to go $$$ You are my hero!
What a great sequence, really clear and helpful - thank you!
Thank you! 🙏
does anyone know where can I buy a ps2 disk drive?
swapped my 35v 33uF cap with a 50v 100uF cap and it started putting out 12v at the rails again. Thanks for the video!
Keep up the good work save as many as you can lol
Thanks! I certainly intend to!
This 27uF 35V capacitor is hard to find. Can some alternative capacitance be used?
No. Capacitance must match the old one. You can go higher on the voltage though. So a 27uF 35v can be a 27uF 50v for example.
I replaced the arm for the fat ps2. the long arm rotor is still making the noise when it hits the center of the ps2 dvd player. Is it a bad motor or what do I need to do?
Sorry! I'm just catching up with comments. Check the plastic piece that connects the laser to the worm gear. Over time it can bend up and may need to be bent down slightly. I've fixed a few disc drives that way. Just bend it slightly because too much and it can break. You can also take the white plastic disc off the lid and place it on the disc and see what the drive is doing when reading the disc. It's magnetic and attaches to the spindle when the disc spins. I show how to do it in some of my videos.
Good job do they sell that av piece new
Unfortunately no. I haven't been able to find any for sale. And I look. A scrap board is where I salvage mine. There isn't much to them so a long term goal of mine is to develop a rebuild kit but I don't have the equipment to do that yet.
Not only aliespress lasers have problems. I instaled original laser from SCPH-102 to SCPH-1002 and need calibrate it after (multimeter and osciloscope).
It seems to be a thing with the PS1s. It's like the official service manual said. You have to recalibrate it. Which stinks when you don't have the equipment (like me lol).
Red should go on top always. The motor will spin in reverse
You are doing it all the hard way. No, the big gear gets pinched underneath and pushed out. Then they all just basically fall out. As far as the laser slide if you look there is a notch that after you pull each clip allows the slide gear to move back a little more and drop out. They really are identical. I'm not sure why you had so much trouble. It is like that it should go back to the home position automatically.
Story of my life. Doing things the hard way 🤣 But thanks for the tips my friend! I'll play around with one of my bad ones and do an update video down the line 😊 I think I mentioned in the video I don't work on PS1s too often so I definitely need more repair experience with this particular console to be more proficient. Comments like yours I really appreciate reading 😊
Necesito saber cómo hacer el cambio de lente
Did you ever get it to work properly?
Yes I did! Just some recalibration and it worked great for a year and a half until I got my Razor a few months ago
Glad to hear that. I bought a replacement back for my g power 2022 and ripped the fingerprint ribbon accidentally so I'm going through the exact same thing.
Ditto
You're so thorough! I admire your work. I dont know much about this kind of thing, but I know my husband watches your videos all the time. Thanks for sharing this useful content.
Mine is broken like half way down any way I can connect the wire to the wire?
You should be able to snip the wires, strip them and solder them to the board. Though it'll definitely be a lot shorter :)
