DKOldies Rejected PS1: When a laser doesn't cooperate

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

On today’s video, we are going to attempt to refurbish and also replace the laser on this PlayStation. Unfortunately, as what happens sometimes, this project went completely off the rails. Hence why this video got a little out of hand on the length. Had I known, I probably would have made this a two parter. But that’s neither here nor there at this point. But hey, that’s why there’s chapters on KZread so feel free to skip around! So come along as I take a look at this PS1 and try and figure out why this dang laser just doesn’t want to cooperate!

For that sticking cover release button I use food grade silicone spray. Leaves no residue and does not collect dirt.

Red should go on top always. The motor will spin in reverse

22:00 watch out when you let the screwdriver slip inside the screwhead, tiny metal shavings are jumping off and they can short circuit chips if they happen to fall just right (ask me how i know this :p )

Thanks for the tip! I didn't even give it any thought. But now I will. Also, good eye! I didn't think the ancient camera I film with picked up details that fine. Or my eye sight is going in my age and didn't notice in editing lol.

Not only aliespress lasers have problems. I instaled original laser from SCPH-102 to SCPH-1002 and need calibrate it after (multimeter and osciloscope).

It seems to be a thing with the PS1s. It's like the official service manual said. You have to recalibrate it. Which stinks when you don't have the equipment (like me lol).

la altura del que sujeta el CD spindle pueda estar o muy alta o muy baja o necesita regular mas el potenciometro y por ultimo algun capacitor desvalorizado q manda señal al lector

I have a fat PS2 question I was wondering if you could assist with. I have a 39001 fat that has drive issues, the disk drive will do a single 1/4 turn and do nothing more. Any idea what causes this/how to fix?

I've faced the same isuues with aliexpress lasers, they're pretty crap. Looking forward to seeing how this story goes with the oscilloscope

It's weird. I honestly haven't had issues so far with lasers from AliExpress until this one lol. But the lasers I've gotten seemed like new-old stock where the markings matched the originals. This one struck me as a knockoff and the labels didn't match the original so I think it's new stock. But when I get an oscilloscope I definitely want to do a video to close this out no matter if it works or not. If it works then I can show how to make it work. If not, well proof not to waste your money on them lol.

The PS2 lasers from aliexpress are finicky as well and usually require Lens Changer to get them up and running. Which means these probably need some calibrating as well. Did you try the lasers on another system to see if they work? I wonder if it's the board itself.

The only PS2 lasers I've ordered from AliExpress was the 400R laser. I only did that because I couldn't find the 400R anywhere else (and it was before I heard of Lens Changer lol). I think I ordered 3 just in case there was a dud or two. The first one worked but spares are nice to have. But I think they were new old stock since all the markings matched the OEM laser. Otherwise I order my PS2 lasers from a company called Total Console on Amazon. They're oem lasers and I've never had a problem. Plus if I did get a dud I can just return it lol. Otherwise I've ordered PS3 lasers from AliExpress and I've never had a problem with them. But again the markings all matched OEM. I remember reading that OEM lasers are calibrated in the factory. I don't think these Chinese manufacturers are calibrating them. Especially since some say to calibrate them in very broken English on the listings lol. I haven't tried in another system. I have another with the same issue so it's worth a shot! I personally don't think it's the board since the factory service manual has a whole section on calibrating them after replacement so I think it's just a thing with these systems but definitely worth ruling it out for sure.

@@titanrepairs I know new old stock of PS3 lasers are still floating around out there but I highly doubt PS2 and PS1 are. As far as I know, no one makes new lasers of those anymore and the supposedly "new" lasers are actually just refurbished ones. Which explains why they are finicky.

    did you checked the fuses?

  • @titanrepairs

    @titanrepairs

No. Which fuses? I'll check them in the follow up video.

  • 23 күн бұрын

@@titanrepairs check your model and look the schematics, fuses are labeled PS and literally signaled with an arrow. I'm sure the official manual will show them. MAn those lasers are easy to calibrate or broken, chinese copies are terrible (wont las more than 3 months without need to recalibrate...) I don' think an oscilloscope would solve the issue. Keep the console and buy an ODE for it to put the games on micro SDs directly, I think xstation is the name. Also make sure, bellow the board if there are previously installed modchips. I've seen them go bad on their own or the installation messing after decades because of a badly soldered cable and they wont even read official disks

Thanks for the info! Very helpful ☺️ I'll look into the ODE and xstation. Maybe I can mod it and sell it that way.

So im kinda doing a proyect like this myself and I've read that those two faintly spins that the laser does its like the basic motion it does when it doesnt really focus on a CD-R and it may be a problem fixable with an oscilloscope. im hitting the same brick wall cause I got an "original" laser, an Aliexpress one, and another one on the way cause for the love of god I cannot make this work. sadly I cant afford neither I know someone with an oscilloscope, so if this new laser comes and it doesnt work then I'll just give up. even adjusting the pot do some work on the laser but it didnt last long at all. maybe a couple reads. and Im trying both burned backups and original games, so Idk what to do now. I'll be wating for a follow up for this video. at least I learned how to change spindles. if it works I might edit and post how I made mine work but I'm not getting any expectations what so ever. sadly Xstation is the way to go for moding a ps1 but on my country even tho I had the money I cant seem to get one so gg.

@titanrepairs I got an update on my project!. just a few minutes ago arrived the last laser drive, and upon inspection, the spindle doesnt spins smoothly, and it got a clicking noice. thanks to this video the first thing that I did was cheking if the lil screws where touching the spindle and they certainly did. one of them was spun out of the socket so I tried to replace it with one of the other lenses that I got and it didnt fit perfectly at the start but, I used my card for the atm to lift the spindle from the center evenly so it doesnt break and it clicked. then I gave the actual lens a lil q-tip with IPA action. I also used a multimeter to see how much of a crank they gave to the pot of this lens driver and it stays still at 780. at this point with the psx stripped of the top plastic I use one of the burned backups that I got of Final Fantasy Tactics. and IT BOOTED. in a good timing if I must say. no delays, no fmv skipping, nothing at all. the lens mechanism for its movement sounds okay as well, seems to be well greased. I also just tested a Copy of Metal gear solid and Megaman X5 and Q-bert and it works perfectly. so it seems I finally finished the project with at least one lens in a working state. idk if is ok with the owner fo this channel but I can put the listing of MercadoLibre from which I bought the lens driver. but Idk if they sells overseas, nonetheless If anyone from Chile comes across with this comment it might be helpful.

Don’t buy crap like that. Use the original laser and with an oscilloscope check: jitter, envelope and amplitude of RF signal.

You are doing it all the hard way. No, the big gear gets pinched underneath and pushed out. Then they all just basically fall out. As far as the laser slide if you look there is a notch that after you pull each clip allows the slide gear to move back a little more and drop out. They really are identical. I'm not sure why you had so much trouble. It is like that it should go back to the home position automatically.

Story of my life. Doing things the hard way 🤣 But thanks for the tips my friend! I'll play around with one of my bad ones and do an update video down the line 😊 I think I mentioned in the video I don't work on PS1s too often so I definitely need more repair experience with this particular console to be more proficient. Comments like yours I really appreciate reading 😊

also you are turning that pot like hell, you should do 1-2 degrees at time, avoid those turning the pot that more than that. Yo can break those Chinese knock off lasers on a whim.
