PS2 HDD to SSD - Plus silent fan!

Ойын-сауық

In this episode, I recant my former statments about PS2 HDD loading and re-do my setup with the new shiny exFAT support that has been released. I also take the time to replace the PS2's stock and noisy fan with a silent fan so I can enjoy the games!

I used FMCB and HDDOSD for my PS2. I transferred the games with a usb to sata adapter. However, I might buy the sd memory card soon. I also use PCSX2 on my portable gaming PC on the go.

When I upgraded my HDD I tried exFAT, but for some reason I couldn't make most games work, so I defaulted back to PFS, added all games through HDL Dumb on the PC, and now use LAN to add/remove individual games. It's slow, but at least I don't have to open up the PS2 every time I do it. I believe the HDD temps inside the PS2 might probably shorten the HDD's life. When Francis Preve's music kicked in, I immediately though "another Retro Bird episode watched"!

HDD temps arent an issue with an SSD mind! Yeah Ive traded off removing the drive (or more accurately the network card and the drive gets stuck inside), for ExFAT just because it means I dont need to keep a Windows machine to hand just to add games 😅

The original GunCon 1 and 2 only work with CRTs as they require the scanning beam to know where they are pointing. The GunCon 3 uses IR tracking like the Wii remote but only Time Crisis 4 and above recognises this controller. There are 3rd party solutions for using older games on LCD but Im not sure which one works for the console games.

Theoretically only as fast as 400 megabits which in theory could rival the internal hard drive but then overhead might lower that. Plus you would need to use a firewire hard drive which aren’t nearly as common as IDE and USB

SSD are still an HDD. SATA SSD are also IDE. And why on earth use SSD in a Ps2, unless you find it impossible to find a spinning PATA hard drive? You will not get any of the SSD advantages on a Ps2. And all it is, are a thing you can brag about.

There is no spin up time and no extra hard drive noise, both of which were noticeable to me. Plus it means I only need a laptop sata drive to usb adaptor instead of one that also supplies 12 volts.

Access times will destroy a traditional HDD - as many consoles are constantly streaming due to the smaller hardware it is using. Your going from avg 15ms to 0ms which in hefty scenes or lots of loading can actually benefit. Please test yourself, you'll see that SSD's are far better then HDD's. Even if there's UDMA66, in random access the HDD will actually be slower due to it's head having to seek constant around the platter. An SSD does not have that problem. Replacing a notebook's HDD with a SSD will speed up things greatly.

  • @brostenen

@@vanderlinde4you Streaming? A Playstation2 does not have those features. Those were implemented in 8'th gen consoles, not 6'th gen. Of course mechanical harddrives wear down. But not the way you say they will. What you are talking about, is fragmentation, and it is fully software related. Not hardware related. It happens on stuff like Windows, and the specific filesystem in use. If you just copy ISO games to the harddrive one at a time, the fragmentation is not severe. The Ps2 does not do writing. It only does reading, and that will never cause fragmentation of data. The specific harddrive standards you refer to, have nothing to do with fragmentation at all. It is just a set of commands and a theoretical transfer speed. Set of commands be the ATA commands that are baked into the harddrives controller on it. Back in 2007, I installed a HDD and used the first versions of FMCB, as they were released. I used ESR the same week it were first released. And I used an ATA-100 harddrive with HD-Loader. What I experienced, were data loading too fast in some games, making the cutscenes being terminated before they have been played through. When using HD-Loader. It happened on few games. That is the only downside I saw with FMCB and HD-Loader.

@@brostenen Consoles do stream. Perhaps the way is said different but consoles simply on the fly do load in textures or different rooms, scenes or open world all the time. A HDD is slower due to it's access times. A SSD would simply max out the UDMA66 connection it does have. I dont see any downside of using a SSD inside a PS2.
