A 'diverted' plasma pulse from our successful ST40 spherical tokamak physics campaign

Ғылым және технология

Watch a ‘diverted’ plasma pulse from our latest successful ST40 campaign, which has helped advance our commercial fusion mission following a series of upgrades to our record-breaking ST40 spherical tokamak.
In a diverted configuration, the magnetically confined plasma is separated from the centre post and walls of the device and its exhaust is directed to a dedicated ‘divertor’ region that extracts heat and particles. This keeps the core plasma cleaner and significantly improves overall performance. The campaign, which ended at the end of September 2023, was focused on improving understanding and developing high-performance diverted plasma scenarios in a high field spherical tokamak.
This work is expanding our understanding and helping to further validate future power plant designs on our path to delivering clean, secure and affordable fusion energy.

In pretty much every tokamak plasma pulse video (not just yours) i see no confinement. I mean, the plasma may not hit the walls of the camber that much, but still it occupies almost the entire volume of the toroidal chamber, without being compressed into a thin dense ring of plasma. Would achieving that be the key for a succesful fusion reactor?

Of course it is confined otherwise it would flash melt the walls of the reactor. They've done merging compression, that's not the thing here.

A larger volume is more powerful, then to increase the density and pressure you would add more fuel. Recently it was found it may be possible to have more of the chamber filled with a larger plasma configuration. Power for tokamaks is volume squared and they can increase the volume by 2x, possibly giving 4x more power for a given size of tokamak chamber. This was a D shaped tokamak so it might not apply to spherical tokamaks

@@Canucklugit's a function of volume and pressure, more pressure, less volume, same power.

i think you should look at how they are dumping the heat out of the tokamak to understand that. Look at the diverted area and how energetic that region appears
