    Fellow mastiff owner here! I worked in veterinary medicine for many years, so even though I'm late to post, I hope you might catch a glimpse of my post to help with weight loss. So, I know it's trendy and everyone feels like "raw is better" but that is not necessarily so. That's because it's very hard to estimate the number of calories in a raw diet. If you were my patient, my suggestion would be to purchase a high-end dog kibble (I feed Origen large breed) and feed them only about 5 - 6 cups a day. For treats, I give my mastiff frozen green beans, broccoli, carrots, and freeze-dried chicken breast for training. When they are hungrier from less kibble/food, they'll gladly take those green beans! Just remember that the USDA regulates dog food and requires that it has the proper balance of nutrition for your animal. It might upset their bellies some at first, but they'll get used to it. You could try and get those big boys moving more by playing fun games with them too. My mastiff loves to play fetch and also with flirt poles. He also loves to do agility (it's silly looking, but he really stumbles around those poles), so you might find a local trainer or agility class. Hope that helps!

    I have a Fawn 21 month old. My second. The key to owning a Mastiff is knowing it’s low key but all day lifestyle. Hair, slobber, house, window cleaning all the time. You can’t leave them alone for long periods of time. Grooming is important. Bath twice a month. Brush mine twice a day for 20 min. They need exercise but you have to work around heat. I live far away from most people. I walk him at a lake.. off leash so he can roam.. no people where I live. Because he gets hot, he’s always in water which means mycar is going to gets blown up. We walk everyday for at least an hour.. They are sniff addicts! At least 20 min of that hour he’s sniffing stuff. Their poop is bear size.. Wonderful video! Don’t get a Mastiff for your ego🙏. Yes, they are giants and people will swarm you to meet them. It’s a huge responsibility. No pun intended.

    Huh that’s very odd, but interesting. Other than the cleaning stuff, that’s almost the exact opposite of what I’ve read and heard from 90% of mastiff owners. Typically they just walk for 15-20x1 per day, have some play sessions, and lounge around. The lean ones, too, not just the heavier ones. Not putting you down or anything, every dog is different, I just think it’s very interesting to see how much dogs can differ even within the same breed!

    None of the mastiff breeds need exercise like a runner like a doberman, but I don't know of any that don't require daily walks, either multiple short ones, or at least one medium distance one. They definitely have exercise needs.@@DropBear_42

    Big dog mom, hi Ray from Indiana, 20 yrs ago I had 2 English Mastiff’s, I had the traditional bury wire underground fencing for 2 acres, eventually like 9 months old they grown out of supplied collars, what did was cut the end’s off the transmitter collars, bought two collars that were same size width of the transmitter collars, cut the new collars in half, so now I had also new clips from those collars, then took them in town to the tailor, had the the two half’s then sewed on to trans collar, now I had two collars that was still adjustable and lasted them for their lives, easy fix really This can be done to any transmitter collars from any manufacturer Hope that helps you choose a company from your fencing, adding the extension with tailored expenses was like $25,00 for both the collars Ray from Indiana

    This is a fantastic idea! Thank you so much! I ended up getting a temporary remote system with two collars and a remote control. I am only planning on using the sound and vibration triggers. The collar for Junior needs to be about 4" bigger and I need a 3/4" collar which doesn't come the size he needs... so I will look into doing this for him. Thank you so much for the tip!

    Pet ins is like dental ins, sometimes your better off just putting something aside each month. Also you can use a low rate cc, instead of paying a high monthly pet premium. Also, Carecredit offers low veterinary financing and you can spread your pymts out.

    Since we live in our Rv full-time we do experience the no fence thing wherever we go. We got max a really long metal cable lead. I think ours is 25 ft. We just wrap on end around the heavy picnic tables and at least he can enjoy the fresh air & outdoors. He would just lay out there for quite a while. He loves the vit d sunshine too.

    Not sure if you’ve gotten this solved yet, but Underground Fencing is a great option. I’ve worked in the field for about 4 years now and I’ve used this for 2 of my own personal dogs, with LOTS of success. I’ve trained English Mastiffs and I can assure you, they work WONDERFULLY for them. Being that these guys tend to be a very sensitive breed, they surprisingly don’t always need a lot in the strength department, usually. GeoFencing is awesome. The problem is, when you have a lot of big things along the edge of your property such as sheds and trees, they tend to cause a lot of interference and will disrupt how precise they can be. It looks like you have a pretty beautiful, but heavily wooded yard, so my best advice would be to go with the traditional, Invisible Fence. It’s reliable and it can go on ANY sized collar, at least that’s the case where I’m from! Just remember to swap out those batteries!

  • @LauraCairn

    I assume you mean an electric shock collar? If that's the case, just so that you're aware, there is not one accredited animal behavioural organization on the planet that recommends the use of e-collars on dogs for a multitude of reasons, one of them being that you are more likely to create aggression in an animal down the line by using one. And in an animal the size of an English Mastiff/with their bite force, the results could be catastrophic. Trainers Susan Garrett, Zac George and Matt Folsom (The Modern Malinois) have great channels on KZread for anyone who wants to learn more about science-backed, positive reinforcement dog training that does not require the use of choke/prong chains or e-collars.

    My husband and I have 3 EM, all bio sisters. Ages 1,1 & 2. All with hip dysplasia sadly. We use all the same supplements and will definitely look into the brands you use. We use Nutra source kibble brand for our food. We looked into raw but as you said it’s practically and with 3 wow!! Lol I do make part of their food. Lots of chicken, veggies , potatoes and they get all the treats. I haven’t made a bone broth I am happy with so I’ll definitely watch your video. Definitely do guard more and on more high alert. There father is 270 and mom is 175. For their benefit I hope they don’t get much bigger. The oldest is 110 pounds and the others are 95 pounds. We do have pet insurance for all 3. We got it when they were all 8 weeks. Definitely beneficial for us! We do live in an HOA and I just got out fenced in yard this last year. Its enough right now for them to get exercise. We did walks but it’s definitely hard with 3. We do it occasionally now.

  • @BigDogMom

    @BigDogMom

    Yay! I'm so happy you liked it! We've had one female Mastiff, so pretty limited experience so far. That said, our female was much more on guard than our boys are. She was incredibly sweet and lovable and friendly with strangers when she was sure they were friends. Our boys take immediately to everyone - almost without a care in the world sometimes. I joke that they are horrible guard dogs. Of course, I never underestimate them. If required to, they would defend their people and our home with their lives. I'm sure of it. The other thing to think about when it comes to male versus female are the health issues. Females can get what is called pyometra which is an infection of the respiratory tract. Scary and not uncommon in Mastiffs. Maybe the last thing is size. Females are generally smaller than males by 20 or more pounds.

    Hello big dog mom, I was watching your video and you looking in fences for your mastiff’s, HOA’S really do stink with restrictions, There’s a company called Halo , it’s a electronic fence with no wire’s to bury, it is totally ran of satellite, you can set the perimeter as you like on computer or smart phone, it pulls up your location and you zoom on property and set the perimeter you need, nice thing about this system is it can go with you on vacation or a home move etc because it’s satellite and you can set up anywhere you are Hope this helps, don’t know cost, but I’m going to look into this myself when I move in near future to Tennessee, love your videos 👍 Ray Simental

    Thank you so much, Ray! I have looked into this one and totally agree that this, in theory, would work perfectly for us. I just got an email back from them that it would work on a wooded lot and I can switch the tracking unit to a larger size collar. I'm researching reviews right now so I'll let you know what I end up getting. I am in conversations right now with Spot On as well to see if there is a way to expand those collars. We have friends with Spot On that LOVE it, so I'm considering it if we can get it to work. When are you moving to TN? We almost moved to the Knoxville area. Love it there!!

    The insurance industry is a profit earning industry and the rates charged by them are based on costs incurred by them (claims) from a large pool of insured customers. They add a profit margin on top of their average costs to calculate the premium they charge. Pet insurers calculate this based on specific breeds, which have known illness risks. Therefore, on average you are better to not be insured, as your average medical bills for your dog breed will be the cost of insurance premiums minus the profit margin. There will be some dog owners who, if not insured, will incur costs less than the premiums and some who pay more.

    Thank you so much! Here is the link to the one I have. I really like it. I did also get a rubber mat to go over the top of it so the dogs don't slip around on it. You can get one of those super cheap at Walmart or Lowe's. amzn.to/47fG56o

    This is a terrific question and one that I haven't really addressed head on. Thank you for the suggestion! We are in the process now of hopefully adding big dog #3 to our family, so will doing this soon if all goes well. I do have a process I use to pick a puppy from a litter - or even decide to pass on a litter when I'm not happy with any of them. I do have a post (several actually) about selecting a breeder. I will start by linking that for you here, then I will work on some content about selecting a puppy. bigdogmom.com/questions-breeder-buying-puppy/ and here's a another slightly older post: bigdogmom.com/selecting-dog-breeder-considerations/

    My EM is a trim 108-112 pounds. He stands 30” at the whether. I never let him get overweight in the first place. I’m not saying this is you at all. But for some people massive weight is a bragging point. Kinda like my truck is bigger and heavier than yours.

    Yes, our boys are inside the home while we are gone. If your dog has never had free range inside your home, you may want to start with a smaller area and see how he/she does. Assuming you have a potty trained adult dog, the biggest risk will be chewing things they shouldn't, getting on furniture, etc. Use a baby gate or playyard to block off a small area and slowly expand it. You can also simply shut doors that are off limits. Start with short trips away and work up to longer periods as he/she has more freedom in the house. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Best of luck!

    I purchased this scale in January once I decided that we needed to get the boys weight under control once and for all. I LOVE IT!! I really think all dog owners need a way to weigh their dogs regularly, not just at their yearly vet checkup. This scale is actually made for livestock and it came highly recommended by Junior's breeder. I looked at a few other scales, but ultimately went with this one based on the recommendation and I've been very happy. Here is the link to it on Amazon: amzn.to/38dXKlJ. I bought this non-slip rubber mat for the top of it: amzn.to/3vAfe3y.

    I love it. I have been waiting for the right time to get my mastiff puppy and its been over 10 years. I finally have him. His name is King Musa and he is 11 weeks old. At 9 weeks i taught him sit, lay down. Give me paw, and to come to me. He’s pretty smart and i also have him walking on a leash pretty well. Still needs work but im working on it. My question first is, you have nice furniture and so do i. My plan is to feed him outside which i already do, and to keep a towel with me. So does your furniture stay clean? Do they mark their territory and slobber on your furniture? If so please tell me what you do and what you used to keep your home clean and fresh from that issue. Right now im okay because he’s crate training and im slowly introducing him to walking around the house. Also im really scared of him marking territory because we have a 13 year old 7 pound Pomeranian shin Tzu mix that is a female. Please give me your opinion.

    I have a male mastiff and he only marked in the house 1 time before he was neutered. If your your Shi-Tzu isn't spayed, get her spayed. It will reduce her chance of uterine and mammary cancers as she ages. Dogs never stop going into heat, so keep that in mind. When you mastiff reaches one year of age, neuter him unless you are keeping him for breeding. Some folks say 18 months, but the research shows as long as it's post one year, bone cancer should not be a problem. Neutering will reduce all those unwanted behaviors like marking and will reduce his chances of becoming injured while wandering. My mastiff isn't allowed on the furniture and he has enormous bowls and vinyl pet mats which reduces the dripping and slobbering . We clean the couches (leather) once a week with orange leather cleaner and they stay nice. We have a steam pet vacuum and use it twice a week. Otherwise, just carry rags and realize they are messy dogs and practice acceptance. It's more important to build a relationship full of love and joy than having a perfectly clean house.

    How do you find having two males. We are getting a English mastiff this winter and already have a male dog at home. Would prefer a male but not sure if it would be a issue.

  • @BigDogMom

    @BigDogMom

    We have had both a male and female and two males at the same time with zero issues. Even when Junior was in tact, he and Sulley were the best of friends. Unless both boys are in tact, I think you will be fine. If they are (i.e. not neutered), you may just need to be mindful around other dogs, especially females, so there's no rivalry. If you have a choice, which I hope you do, I would shoot for a complimentary temperament to the dog you currently have. Usually, a confident, even tempered puppy will work perfectly in most homes. I hope this helps! Best of luck and congratulations!!

    I had Nationwide pet insurance it was $40 a month with $1,000 dollar deductible on my bullmastiff I used it when she had an ACL tear in her knee which was $5,000 and all I had to pay was $1,000 dollar deductible and they covered the rest which was in 2019 I had it on since she was a puppy in 2016 she passed away in 2023 due to cancer I don't know what the rates are today in 2024 I had Insurance on her when she was a puppy in 2016

    Wow! I'm so sorry about the ACL and cancer with your sweet girl. Insurance is great when things like this happen! Did you not have the insurance through her cancer diagnosis? I'm assuming you didn't. That's the challenge with most pet insurances... the prices increase over time making them quite unaffordable for most big dog families with adult and senior dogs.

    I chose not to get pet insurance and instead put the premiums in a savings account. That way if you need it you have the money. If not you still have your money . Mastiff insurance is very expensive ♡

  • @BigDogMom

    Great question! I would have to say no, a Mastiff is not an ideal breed for a first time dog owner. There are too many reasons for me to list here, but in brief, Mastiffs are a lot of dog. They supersize every aspect of dog ownership. And if you've never had a dog, boy, a Mastiff would give you a rude awakening. Now if the person has owned a dog before, but just not a Mastiff, with proper education and a network of Mastiff owners to help you, sure, a Mastiff can be an amazing addition to your family.

    I can tell you love your dogs but they are massively overweight which is why you have to coax them out of bed. Just like fat people they don’t want to do much. Wikipedia will say that this breed can be up to 100kg but that is only if you want your dog to have a short and unhealthy life. It should be 80kg and their diet should be mostly fresh meat with some kibble and supplements from the vets that you can sprinkle on their food. I absolutely promise you that if you put your dogs on a diet they will become more active, funnier, happier and living a lot longer. Best of luck to you ❤️

    I greatly appreciate the feedback. While I would agree that both of my boys, now neutered and in their senior years, are a little overweight, they are not massively overweight. I have a scale for them in my basement and am actively working with them on losing weight, however, as a long-time Mastiff owner I can tell you their behavior, and the behavior of my other Mastiffs, is pretty consistent at all weights. It's just how they are. They will jump at the chance to play the second I say the word. But if I'm busy doing something else, they are content to lay around or play with each other. 😊

    Thank you for sharing your day, I live in Melbourne Australia and have a 3 year old brindle female purebred English mastiff…she is wonderful gentle, kind,friendly, playful and crazy about food! I must say I don’t think your guys are overweight they look just fine to me! Are they desexed or entire ?My girl will be desexed in a few weeks. I am interested in the harnesses you have on them what is the brand? Do they work well? What is the advantage of using a harness? Anyway thanks again, kisses to (hope I’ve got the names right) Sully and Jules (?), regards from Ann, also a mastiff mum and saving up for a male in the future! If my Ivy needs to trim down a bit I reduce the feed and replace with mixed steamed vegetables with a bit of stock and increase exercise, regards from Ann🇦🇺🐨🦘
