You were very lucky to get 13 years out of a Bullmastiff ( I got 13 out of mine to ) I am currently fostering a 160lbs Neo now, having a VERYY hard time finding a perfect match for him a forever home as these Neos are knid of strong headed about basic rules, like don't hurt dad !. or don't eat the stainless steel food bowel, He has chewed up 3 really bad already lol. He will come around with time but oh boy these Neapalitans are very different ! I had my buddy weld me up a 1/4 inch thick plate Stainless Steel food bowel. True he can't destroy it, so he throws it across the room all day long ! I think I will bolt it to the concrete floor!

I'm so glad you have addressed the REAL truths about Mastiffs. I think the worst thing anyone can do is to be interested in one just because of the size a breeder tries to achieve. Our Axle is 4 years old, he walks with dad 2 miles everyday and loves it so much, he weighs 175lbs and is as strong as an ox and gentle as a lamb. He's the center of our home. He's very expensive and very loved and I hope anyone who is thinking about getting one does extensive research and is not only prepared to pay good money for a well bred dog that has had genetic testings but also realizes the monthly costs for the dogs lifetime!

We rescued a brother (175 lbs) and a sister (154 lbs) brindle English Mastiff from a local shelter. They were 7 years old at the time. That is their life expectancy, but ours lived to be 13 and 14 years old, respectively. They were the epitome of "Gentle Giants," and were among my favorite dogs I have ever owned. They are messy though, especially with their slobber (see the end of the English Mastiff 101 video). They shake their heads and slobber goes everywhere, including on the walls. We only gave them fresh water outside in 5 gallon buckets because their slobber, by far, was worst after drinking. They shed an awful lot too. We had to confine them to the lower part of the house, which was partially finished. If you can put up with the mess, you will have yourself an outstanding, loyal, huge dog that you can put your arms around (just barely) and give some big hugs. Everything in this video is pretty much spot on with what we experienced with our Mastiffs.

What a blessing you had so many wonderful years with your Mastiffs! That's truly remarkable! We are going on year 7 and 9 with Junior and Sulley, definitely into their senior years. I pray we see 13 with one or both of them! Great job! As far as the mess, AMEN! You need to watch the video I did recently about cleaning up after them. You will get a kick out of it! And the blog post linked in the description goes into even more graphic detail about the mess. haha! Here's the video - kzread.info/dash/bejne/k21lkruDlsTPgJs.html

Just wanted to drop into the comment section to say “thank you” for making this video! I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed watching it, and seeing your gorgeous boys in the background. Having an Old English Mastiff as a child was both a truly miraculous happening and the best thing that ever happened to me. He was my best friend and I have NOTHING but the fondest memories of him! I loved the distinction you made on the point of Mastiffs and children - Mastiffs have the ability to be wonderful with children, but so much is dependent on proper socialization as well as the children in question. I don’t know why your video popped up in my feed but I’ve subscribed and I’m so pleased to have found you, Mastiff Mom! :)

Thank you for all this information. I took care of an old mastiff that was dumped by its owners in our area. I live in Utah near. A wildlife reserve by the Salt Lake. They basically just threw the dog out of their car. My neighbor saw this and came and got me. He knows I take in dumped dogs. We took him home and he was immediately comfortable we fed him and he was very thirsty it gets up to 100f in the summer here. We noticed a bad smell from his ears so we knew it was an ear infection and took him to the vet. The vet told us he had an abnormality in his ears and should have had an ear on late many years ago but he was old and it was to late. We gave him the medication and cleaned his ears daily. Buddy is what we called him followed me every where I went he didn't even need a lead but he couldn't walk more than half a block. The vet had told us that he did not have long to live. We had a wonderful 3 months with him and he with us. But he stopped eating and I fed him by hand for awhile but then he stopped drinking to and we knew it was time to let him go. We had the vet sedate him and we hugged him and said our good bye. We had gotten very attached to him in 3 months. He has a special place in my heart. Just as I am sure there is a special place in hell for his previous owner who dumped him in an area he didn't know and would have died a horrible death from heat and thirst and drinking brackish salt marsh water.

@Pork chop Thank you, I don't understand how people can just throw away a dog they have had for 10 years. That was Buddy's estimated age. Every dog I have owned made it well into its teens. Even a boxer we had they have a life expectancy of about 9 or 10 she made it until 13. They say the larger the dog the lower the life expectancy. I don't go by this premise. A dog even though it cannot speak will let you know when it's had enough. Even if you try to feed it and almost force it to drink it will not. I have 3 dogs at the moment a 10-year-old boxer/great Dane 2-year-old boxer/lab and a 17-year-old Chihuahua. He is old and now sleeps most of the day. He has a cubby in my headboard above my head. Normally you would use it for books. But it is his safe place. He knows exactly when it is dinner time and when it's bedtime for me. He is old and we have the vet check him every 3mo to ensure he is not in pain. Every she says he is the healthiest 17-year-old dog she has ever seen.

My English Mastiff is 8 years old and he is by far the best dog I have ever had and I have had some great dogs including Labs, Boxers, and mixed breeds in my life. He is extremely smart, was house trained in 2 days. He learned boundaries extremely quickly, we have an open plan kitchen and he knows not to go in there. He is an absolute sweetheart, loves cuddles, is extremely good with children and other dogs. He will sit outside my front door, no fence, and watch people and other dogs walk past without even thinking about running after them. He gets excited every Christmas when he sees the Christmas stockings. Full of love and character. Would recommend them for experienced dog owners but not for first timers.

@@BigDogMom it is possible to maximize their life expectancy with good supplements, premium food, stimulation for their mental health. My neighbor’s first 3 Mastifffs died at about age 5. They were not especially well bred either. Their current male has been fed like I feed Annie (raw), has all his supplements, and Vet care. Bubba and Annie are now over 8.5 years old and both act like puppies. You can’t feed a giant breed kibble from the grocery store and expect strong bones, heavy muscle, etc. That’s my opinion anyway. They are not inexpensive dogs.

Thats my only complaint about my mastiff. She didn't live long enough. She made it 9½ years before having a heart attack but I wish she would have out lived me. Over the years I've had many dog breeds but the English mastiff is by far my favorite! I will say I hit the lottery with the one I had. She had all of the pros and a dry mouth to boot as long as she wasn't eating or drinking.

I’m an adoptive parent of a male English Mastiff 5 years old at 30” and a trim 160 lb. My son also an owner caught wind of an owner who had become terminally ill and contacted him telling him he would take in his two Mastiff and find them good homes. We’ll long story short I became the adopter of one. Already named Barlow, I’ve fallen in love with this massive dog. I’ve had other big dogs, German Shepard, a Golden, and a Rottie. He is so loving and real pal to have at my side. As per habit my dogs go everywhere with me when possible and he wouldn’t have it any other way. By my own observations, Barlow is not near the big eater you would expect. He eats about 5 cups a day of kibble. About twice a week I cook him a nice chicken breast and mixed vegetables. He absolutely is not a drooler other than when salivating for his chicken dinner. He is however an extremely messy drinker which not a problem. He sheds half as much as the Rottie did which is a plus. He wants nothing more than to crawl up next to me and lay his head in my lap. He seldom is more than few yards away from me all hours of the day and night. He loves to be taken out in public where he garners mastiff attention and mastiff admiration. To date he has been great around other dogs who he pretty much ignores. Other than barking at strangers he’s never exhibited aggression. But his bark is as loud as they come. I love him so much I see another in my future. 😎👍👍

However the instant she suspects any danger to her family she immediately springs into protection/ guard mode. Her impressive intelligence & instant appropriate responsiveness to whatever situation she finds herself faced with has been amazing & deeply gratifying to watch. Thank-you for a measured and very factual portrait of the Mastiff, especially the correct nomenclature "Mastiff" . I've owned here in UK Mastiffs and bullmastiffs for over 30 yrs and am frequently asked all those questions and more. One thing I must mention and you did highlight it in your video is exercise, specifically puppies , too many ppl think that a lot of exercise is needed and that they should take their puppy on long walks, nothing could be more damaging, their growth plates are so vulnerable to damage that even the constant walking up and down stairs can cause irreparable damage. Infact most breeders here will refuse you a puppy if you intimate they will have to use stairs from day one . Luckily here in UK our yearly numbers of puppies bred is around 150 pups so homes are in great demand and most do go to very suitable or experienced homes . My Annie ran agility when young and has titles and now does nose work. She definitely needs her job. Also, in my opinion, because a Mastiff is smart, they make their own decisions. It’s not disobedience. Annie cracks me up when she considers her choices carefully. She is the best dog I’ve ever owned, or rather owned me. I agree with most of what you’ve said in this video. The breed is not for everyone.

So, so true. Our big baby is 10 mos old. Whew, did we learn a lot over the months. We also tried to educate and prepare ourselves prior to purchasing our new pup (english mastiff). We had a mastidane before him, which was also a giant, howeverl our experience with the english is totally different. Totally agree with the exercise!! Wow!! I'm worn out, daily. I'm glad I'm retired and have the extra time for him. Guard dog? Yes, long history of that, however our pup is so passive and gentle, maybe because he's still young. Pricey yes, agree, we feed him only the best and that can be really expensive in booth food and care, and he's no where near full grown yet. Yikes, I may have to come out of retirement! Lol. We have been doing a ton of socializing throughout his growth. He loves, loves kids! Also, I find he's passive and will let other dogs eat his food. He also let's smaller dogs be bullies, ha. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experiences. Your website and videos have helped us tremendously. Love, Max's mom. Yes, he has my heart fully ♥

Haha! Max sounds amazing and a true blessing for you! Your comment about coming out of retirement made me laugh out loud. Haha! You won't... but sometimes it feels like that for us too. One thing you will want to watch out for, and perhaps he's already through the second one already, but fear periods in adolescent Mastiffs can be nerve-wracking. I would not say your boy is passive - as Junior and Sulley will let others eat their food too - but he is confident enough in his skin that he feels no need to be reactive about stuff that might send other dogs into a frenzy over. Mastiffs are stoic, but when pushed or presented with an actual threat, your "passive" boy may just show a different side to his personality. A proper temperament will likely never have to do that... but, trust me, they will if they have to. Quick story... when Sulley - my CGC boy - was 9 months old, he was home with my kids and the babysitter while my husband and I were on a date night. When we got home the babysitter told us what happened while she was putting the kids to bed upstairs, someone started jiggling the handle of our front door. No knock. Just messing with the handle. Sulley immediately went downstairs and stood between the stairs and the front door, hair on end, hackles up, growling a low growl that none of us had ever heard before from him (and haven't again since). After a minute or two the person left, but Sulley stayed at the bottom of the steps until my husband and I got home. That experience really changed how I feel about Mastiff temperament. Sulley's temperament is what I would consider close to perfect for a Mastiff. We don't need to train the guard dog into them... they were bred for the job. ❤️

@@BigDogMom thank you so much for sharing your story. Wow!! I can only imagine that moment when Sulley was at the door, ready to protect his family. The grooling/grawling sound someone heard on the other end, definitely sent someone packing. Good boy Sulley. How majestic these creatures truly are. Every day I am amazed by the love our Max brings. If I am sad, or having a bad day, he just looks into my eyes and my heart melts. I love it when he puts his heavy head across my chest. It makes everything all better. He is only 10 mos old and I already have to stop myself at the thought of knowing, time is so short and precious with him. So I soak up all the love and joy he brings each day, and I engrave these moments in my heart and mind. I think the lifespan is short, for angles too who pass through our lives moments in time. Ops, sorry, getting a little emotional there ;) Thank you again. I have learned so much from your website and I am truly grateful for the knowledge that you share. I referred to it often, and I'm constantly learning new things. Many thanks to you.

So my female English mastiff is 8yrs old. She weighs 150 but she is opposite of what this lady said. She has very long legs very. She also is beyond energetic like a 3 yr old toddler. Also she does not drool. Only when she is like salivating for something which is not often. She does shed. She is on a raw diet. She is great with kids guarding and she is high maintenance. My baby is still in perfect health at her age no hip displasia nothing alot of that comes from the diet and not forcing the higher end of the weight spectrum. As far as maintenance its way less then a kid it's not as over whelming as one would make it sound. She is a lap dog great with other people and animals. Naturally has stepped in when needed. Great with depression. Able to comfort more then one family member. Bonded with each one of us individually. Also I would just like to specify my mastiff does not shake drool and stuff when she wants water she steps in tub turns it on drinks then turns it off no bs. But she always licks the left over around her mouth. She never like shakes like normal dogs do only when she is wet guess I got lucky.

My nephew just got an English mastiff as kind of a reward for putting together 2 owners for breeding so he got a puppy. He knows about the breed as it's my other nephew and a good friend that has them but I don't think this is a breed that you just kind of say hey why not. Everyone gets big dog big money, but the living situation if you rent (he does) is going to get exponentially more difficult as is getting someone to watch the dog when your away. I'm going to point him to your channel to get an insiders perspective as I think he's biting off more than even a mastiff could chew (zinger)!!

A couple years ago I had to put my English mastiff to sleep. Her name was Abigail. She lived to be 12 and a half years old She was 75% English Mastiff 25% German Shepherd. I took her in as a puppy six weeks old, other coworkers from the company I worked for Took in the rest of the puppies, by the time Abigail was two years old she was the last living sibling. Two of them got put to sleep because the owners did not understand what it took to raise a English mastiff. One of them got bit by a rattlesnake The other one got into antifreeze. One of my memories. Abigail did not slobber or drool unless she drank a lot of water. Every time my mom came over to visit Abigail would run straight to the water bowl drink up a lot of water then run up to greet my mom and use her lap as a napkin. My mom would start screaming to get Abigail away from her😂 you could see Abigail laughing every time.

First and foremost, God bless you for your service! My whole life I've been fascinated by military and law enforcement K9's and their training, so it's wonderful to hear from you. I think you are on the right track in terms of which breed would be best for you. Keep in mind that we lived with Junior and Sulley in the Arizona desert for 12 years. They can do well in the heat if you have access to a pool, AC, etc. It's not ideal for them, but it is possible. I will say my boys are MUCH happier in Michigan and LOVE the winter. If you are familiar with military dogs, my guess is you will want an intelligent breed that you can be active with? Are you looking for a large dog or a giant breed?

Got a French mastiff. She is not as big as the English mastiff but has a similar appearance. My does not have a the black mask but the shape of the body is the same. Around year 1900 they crossed some English mastiff in order to get them larger. This was due to a supreme male that won a major dog show. The breed is a bit rough on the edges but has a heart of gold. The personality is great but she is kind and curious. Dribble a lot but are otherwise easy to maintain. Doesn’t bark much but you can hear her when she is in deep sleep or eating and drinking. That seems to be the same for most mastiffs. Also they require moderate exercise. In my opinion they are great dogs.

Thank you for the comment. I don't believe I've ever heard the three block rule. I was always told never to walk your Mastiff further than you are willing to carry him home. An adult Mastiff can certainly walk further than three blocks safely, but a growing puppy (up to about 2 years old) could hurt themself if exercise is forced.

  • @BigDogMom

    @BigDogMom

    7 ай бұрын

While 31" is very tall for that young of a puppy, I doubt he is abnormal. Remember, with young growing Mastiffs you want them to grow as slow as possible to prevent orthopedic issues. Are you still feeding 3x/day? If so, you could certainly back that down to 2x/day to help slow his growth. I would recommend working with a local Mastiff breeder to be sure he is growing normally. They can be a wonderful source of information over the life of your dog if they are a reputable preservation breeder.

Chester did really good never was sick a day till a almost week before he passed away we noticed that he was unstable on his feet one day and we called and made a appointment for the next day and the next day came and he was unable to get up and walk so I got help to load him up to take him to the doctor and we took him and the vet gave him some antibiotics and gabapentin and the next day he was just laying there pretty much out of it and his owner he was eighty four years old at the time he would lay down next to him on the floor to be with him and he said when he got up to go to another room ol Chester would holler out in a howl and he would come back and lay down next to him ol cheddar had to be next to him he would hold his paw but anyway we took him to see a different vet in the next county because it was in a Sunday when he got sicker and his regular vet wasn't open so we took him there and they came to the truck with a stretcher and took him in the emergency room and about a hour later the Dr Came in to talk to us about him and the Dr said that chester had several tumor in his abdomen and what happened he pretty much bled out in his abdomen and I remember that his neck was so swollen up and it was from all the blood loss and he said that he could give him blood and try to operate but with his age and condition he doesn't think it will work and he said that he was suffering so he talked him into just putting him down but when he was talking to him and me about him the nurse came in and said that he was passing away so the Dr asked us to come in the back with him and we went back and my friend was able to spend about a minute if that with him and chester open his eyes for the last time and his owner was kissing him and telling him he loves him and he passed away it was so hard on him he still talks about chester all the time he was like my dog Bigfoot he was one of a kind he was extremely over protective of his owner he was a very good soul. My friend is still alive and he just turned eighty eight years old. He bought chester a casket and vault from the funeral home and they brought it to my house because I took chester home with me to fix him up for the funeral his grandsons came to help me load him up to take him back home for the funeral the next day they had dropped off the metal burial vault at his house and brought the casket to my house which was a little spooky to say the least but I had him looking so good for his funeral I alot of time know people and they have a pet to pass away and I will go get them and bring them home and make a casket and take them back to them I love animals and love helping people but chester wasn't a full blooded mastiff he was mixed with maybe a blood hound maybe but he was a very special dog I've known him since he got him as a puppy he was a good hundred and fifty pounds.. I didn't want to bore you with all the details I thought I should tell all about him he was a very good soul and he has been missed for everyday he has been gone his owner RC has never been able to get over it he said that he was like his son and best friend poor ol fellow he will cry about him to this day but twenty years is a very long time.. I miss my bigfoot so much I'd give everything I own to have him back house and properties and everything I don't know we're I'd live but I would be happy to have him back but as we know it doesn't work that way.. take care of yourself and God bless you my friend 🙏

The bigger the do the more medicine they'll need. Dosages are by weight. Our Willow is 235 lbs. The normal heart meds is much higher than that for a Toy Poodle. A friend made me post this.

i try to socalize my pup any chance i can and so far hes grown to be a gentle giant and i dont think hes ever barked at another dog. its funny watching people walking their dog and it starts barking and pulling towards mine and my pup ive noticed just sits down and looks back at the other dogs. he doesnt have much motivation to bark back or even go towards other dogs. but just observes and makes mental notes lol. i have a 6 month old brindle mastiff!

I am a clean freak. But our Beau has made me relax. Slobber on kitchen cabnits and sofas has taught me that it is only stuff and can be cleaned. We/I love our Beau. But those farts require a gas mask. Lol

kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3yrrpKpfbHFqpM.htmlsi=98RSqSwLX7gRaX8B See above re Spanish mastiff As a house pet the English is probably preferred However the Spanish is still bred as a working dog

I had three 250 lbs mastiffs. None of them lived to be 5 yrs old. Broke my heart. 2 became paralyzed without explanation n died. One developed bone cancer n had to be put down.
