I wish I had been in your shoes. I would have loved to know him as a person. I grew up on country music, and Toby was one of my favorite artists. I joined the Army 2 years out of high school and they played Courtesy Of The Red White And Blue during my graduation from basic. I had never in my life felt more awesome than at that moment, marching onto the field with smoke bombs going off. I felt like a hero.

Hi Britt. Toby was a great guy and a great entertainer. I am going to give you a few answers to some questions you sort of asked and some you didn't ask lol. Toby did not serve, but his Dad did. In fact his Dad lost an eye during his service. Toby never stopped traveling and performing for the troops. All over the world. He didn't really get his break in the music biz until well into his 30s I believe. He was playing in bars etc and working hard at other things to support his family. He was indeed a big guy. He played high school and then semi pro football. He also worked in the oil fields. He actually went to college at (I believe) Villanova. Not sure for how long. Oh and the red solo cups were a staple at Toby's shows. He had a huge hit song called red solo cup. An ultimate party song for BBQs, frat parties and tailgating. If you decide to check it out do yourself a favor and watch the actual video. It's a riot. Oh and a couple quick references from the song we just watched that might have gone over your head because they were before your time. There was a TV western that was on the air for many years called Gunsmoke. 2 of the main characters were the Marshall Matt Dillon and the saloon operator Miss Kitty. He also mentioned Gene and Roy. They were both movie and TV singing cowboys. R.I.P. Toby Keith

The song has strong ties to Dodge City. The story, as told by Keith numerous times to the ‘Los Angeles Daily News’ and on country music radio, begins with Keith and a few buddies hunting for pheasant and quail in Dodge City in 1993. One night, the boys decided to go out to the Longhorn Saloon downtown for a steak dinner. Lyne Johnson, the Executive Director of the Boot Hill Museum, picks up the story from there. “One of the guys in their group kept asking a girl sitting near their table to dance, and she kept shooting him down. It wasn’t very long until one of the local cowboys in town came up and asked her to dance, and she said ‘Absolutely!’ and got up and danced. So, all the guys started hollering. One of them looked at the guy and said, ‘You should’ve been a cowboy, and then she’d have danced with you’,” said Johnson. “She guns him down and everyone makes fun of the poor guy and he comes back to the table and a young guy, about half his age, swoops in and takes her to the floor,” Keith told the ‘Los Angeles Daily News’. “One of them turned and said, ‘John, you should’ve been a cowboy.’ I thought, well, I have to write that.” The line stuck with Keith. The young songwriter went back to his room at the Dodge House Hotel. He went into the bathroom and closed the door so as to not wake up his roommate, sat on the edge of the bathtub, and wrote the song in 20 minutes.

A hell of a man. He worked the oilfields and played semi pro football before becoming famous for this song. Quite patriotic, he traveled the world to entertain the military any and every time they asked. He signed Taylor Swift to his record label when she was 15. Big Machine Records. Yep, a hell of a man, i miss him already.

If you haven't been to a country concert GO at least once and pick a good one! everyone if family and there to party lol sit on the lawns down south and just relax its something you have to see in person 🥰 and he was always very handsom and funny and kind...this one hits me a lil bit...he was 6 foot tall just lots of charisma for sure !

Should Have Been a Cowboy, his first hit, was the most played Country song in the 90s. Listen to Does That Blue Moon Every Shine on You. He did 15 tours in combat zones performing over 200 shows for the troops. His Dad was in the military & modeled patriotism for Toby.

Listen to “Cryin’ For Me” (Wayman’s Song). He wrote right after Wayman Tisdale, an OU basketball player, NBA #1 pick, and musician died from cancer. It’s a beautifully written acoustic performance.

Met him while.inwas serving in Bosnia. He recorded Cortesy of the red white and blue while there. He spent the on base meeting everyone and played softball for a long time. Stayed after the concert for a handshake and picture with every person. He also sounded in person just like he did on tape

So sad to hear of the passing of Toby Keith. Fun Fact. In March 1993 Mercury Nashville Had three budding stars that they set upon the public with their New Artist Triple Play Tour featuring live performances by John Brannen, Toby Keith & the unheard of Shania Twain. Toby Keith came out the favourite of that tour. RIP Toby :( Thanks for you fun music clips.

Seems like a good person, played a whole lot of shows for our troops. Has plenty of fun songs, definitely believed America was a great place and stood firm in those beliefs. This song is great, a tribute to classic Westerns. I remember "How Do You Like Me Now" as the first time I took notice of him. He was a roughneck before he made it in music - working in the oil fields helped give him a deep appreciation for regular folks.
