To all Americans, Toby will always be a cowboy. Legend, Country Music Icon. His music comforted people after 9/11. We will never forget him and his songs. Rest in peace brother, we'll take it from this side. See you again someday.

Waking up to a text from my daughter telling me about Toby broke my heart so much. I was so hoping that he would beat this horrible disease. Maybe by putting a boot in a certain place. Of course I am a fan of his music, but I not only loved his music, I have so much respect for him as a human being. He helped many of us heal, after 911. He represented us in flipping the bird to Bin Laden and the terrorist who helped him. The most important thing he did during and after that time was the many times he went to entertain our troops. He cared about them and helped them to maybe forget - for a little bit - where they were. Not every performer did that. He wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, which I knew with Toby “what you see is what you get”. Take him for who he is or not…whatever. I’m happy that he is not in pain anymore. He’s in a better place. It’s his family, friends and fans who are feeling the pain of a broken heart. RIP Toby. Your music will live on forever. PS: I hope you sing Red Solo Cup up there 😊

In September 2023 he was awarded the People Choice Country Icon Award & he sang a song he wrote for Clint Eastwood. They had been talking & he asked Clint how he kept going at his age & Clint said, 'I get up & go outside & don't let the old man in'. Toby went home & wrote 'Don't let the old man in' & gave the song to Clint for his birthday. Clint used it in his movie 'The mule' & it's a powerful song. Toby sang it in September & it was a fitting song for him to sing. He was frail & thin & it was hard to watch, but I'm glad I did. I love that man & his music. God bless him. May he rest in peace.

What a perfect song to pay tribute to Toby! A few cultural references if you didn’t know: Marshall Dillon, Ms Kitty - fictional characters on the 1970s TV western“Gunsmoke” Gene and Roy - Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, two of some of the earliest country and western stars, and also movie stars from the 1930s and early 40s Jesse James - one of the most infamous outlaws of the old west. He and the “James Gang” robbed banks and trains, among other things. Texas Rangers - the Texas state police, which was formed when Texas was still a republic. Very important in American West history.

He said he wrote this after a hunting trip. He and his pals went to a club in their camo. One buddy asked a gal to dance and she turned him down. He came back to the table saying " i guess i should have been a cowboy" because the other guys in the club had on jeans and cowboy hats and had no trouble getting the ladies to dance with them. Toby took that line and wrote this song. ❤❤❤
