It was this movie that started my fascination with 18th century fashion.

For me it was just prior attire and the fact that our nation basically got started around this time period. (Liberty kids is so amazingly well done)
One of my favourite movies of all time. That‘s when I fell in love with historic fashion.

I agree!!! I can see why!
I love the makeup in this film as well.
Her first Blue French Dress is my Ultimate Cosplay GOALSSSS
This movie is such a guilty pleasure with some of my favourite movie gowns. I’d honestly wear most of these gowns but my favourites are the Austrian princess gowns including the ones she travels to France in; pale blue and pink morning gown; her garden walking gown; her peach robe a la anglaise; her floral brocade church and breakfast gown; her black and lilac gown; her pastel blue silk gown; her black masquerade gown; her pale blue and white silk and fur gown; her blue velvet and ermine gown; her Vogue photoshoot pink gown; her robe anglaise retrosee; her light floral brocade gown; her blue and silver accented coronation party/Vogue gown; her coronation sack backgown; white silk blue silk and pink flower gown; her white cloak with fur trim; her blue silk anglaise gown; yellow silk gown with rosettes straw hat; her floral rose a la polonaise gown; her white silk polonaise Trianon gown; blue silk zone front gown; soft pink robe a la American gown; white striped and sheer gown; pale green and riding coat gown; her white and blue stripe polonaise gown; her black gown with sash gown; her black mourning Sophie outfit gown; her mourning blue opera gown; her flea robe a la anglaise gown; pale pink gown with black belt; her nightgowns; her blue silk English style gown; her blue opera gown; her pastel pink silk gown; but by far my favourites of all of her gowns are her white cotton and muslin chemise a la reine gowns.
Such beautiful gowns, I love those gowns from the 1790s. So impractical for today, but I would love to wear them!

Thank you so so much!! Comments like yours make it all worth while!!
15:01 I love this so much. It's just so flowy and beautiful in this scene. I love these looks much more than the court gowns. Of those, I liked the light blue traveling dress she wore when she arrived. I am just blown away by the costuming in this film. I've watched it at least 5 times just for that. And Kiersten was the perfect canvas. Thank you so much for this video. Otherwise, I'd be watching it again! 😉
One of my favorite movies....the costumes are absolutely brilliant!
One of my fav movies.. and Kirsten Dunst has and will always be sooooooo underrated... she is a brilliant actress.. her expressions more so than even her dialogues are always so deep and complex.. she can say a lot with out saying anything.. and she has always resonated with me.. but that could just be me and my bias due to the age I was when Sofia Coppolas "The Virgin Suicides" came out.. was truly obsessed and still kinda am with that film..an ofcourse its...LUX😏 But no for real love everything about this gorgeous movie.
The costumes and shoes in this movie are exquisite!
I always feel torn by this kind of media because, while absolutely exquisitely gorgeous and sumptuous, it represents a horrible disparity in wealth. I find I can't think of one without the other. That being said. The brocade dress with the hat and salmon gloves are a favorite of mine, also the buttercup yellow pet au lair (sp?) with the vibrant pink skirt is a stunning combination. I also love the zone front she wears on the Vogue cover!
I would love to see this as a series like Catherine the great Elizabeth w cate blanchette Would be fun to see the differences from the way Hollywood portrays that eras difference between the 90s and now and if it’s more accurate or less now❤

Cultured Elegance -- I would have loved to have worn any one of these gorgeous gowns. But I would stop short of wanting to be Marie Antoinette, as I believe she lost her head during the French Revolution on the guillotine. Is there a place we can go to see these gowns, such as a museum for historical French fashion.

@@MonicaVartolomeiFDDLP Vartotrad -- You don't need to be a queen, or to have hundreds of pretty dresses to lead a contented life. But you do need your head!
I love the rose print gown in the meadow scene. Inviting and cool with a great flow it appears to accent her beauty even more. The 'cottage peasant' dresses are also fashioned in the same manner but offer a more relaxed vulnerability with them. I love this film and and the array of absolutely stunning pieces that all the actors wore.
Hello! I live in Sweden and I love historical gowns. My dream is to open a museum and show historical gowns but my father says that Sweden is too small for that kind of project.

The patterned dresses at 3:50 are my favorite. Those prints were so beautiful in the sun, fluttering in the breeze.
All dresses are beautifull and seem to be an explosion of colours. I really love those, who are more natural. I also like natural hair without powder.
This is one of my most favorite movies of all time! I was so thrilled you made a video about it! 😊 I just wish you'd talk more about what each outfit symbolizes or represents about her life. That's one of my favorite things about costuming; what it symbolizes, what it represents, how it helps tell the story. You did mention it a bit when she told her dressmaker she wanted something more simple, but I think especially with such an incredible life she had, discussing what the outfits symbolized throughout the entire video would have been even more powerful. Excellent video! ❤ 👗🌸

It’s an incredible film! Love that idea and will have to do that for another video! Thank you
The black gown is to die for!
Easier to tell you my least favorite dress; the wedding dress. It's hard to choose otherwise. They are all so beautiful!
I was told once i owned 2 actual capes by Marie Antoinette aquired from my relations.I foolishly gave one away+the velvet with silk lining is now so threadbare disintegrating because i display it rather than pack to preserve. The blue hooded cape i gave up was velvet with lilac satin or silk lining with her embroidered inscription on a small secret pocket.I cant believe i let it go.
to dress like this would be so much fun
They are all so very beautiful!!!❤️

I just stumbled across your channel yesterday while searching for anything on “Truman’s Swans” and now I have a long list of your videos saved to catch up on. Each video I have watched already is so nicely done. As many times as I’ve seen this movie you point out so many beautiful details I missed and it’s really nice to hear the history behind the looks.
The one @8:30 this one had me take a breath in 😮🩵
I have no interest in fashion nor I like period films that much, but this film feels so modern and looks so beautiful, I absolutely love it.
The white floral gowns I loved!!! ❤
A great presentation. Very informative. Thank you

Even with the mistakes, or maybe Easter eggs,I really liked this movie
These costumes for the men & women are beautiful. The costumes should be on a World Wide Tour depicting the era that they would have been worn.
I love this. So beautiful and informative. Wow a lot of time and work went into this. So well done!!!!! BRAVO

@ 0:16 foreboding ((in a *shade* of "let them eat cake" )))
I really dislike the situations when she arrived with the carriage..only the kids were smiling at her, coz kids not cannot lie. Others, well, they just judgemental.
As pretty as the dresses were, I found them to be too plain for Marie Antoinette to wear. She wasn't just the last queen of France, she was a fashion icon, all eyes of Europe were on her. So when she stepped out for a night on the town, she did more then some silk dresses with a few ribbons. She change European fashion, this movie did not give her true credit. Norma Shearer's 1938 version of Marie Antoinette is incredible, even the extras were "extra". No one was left out. Unfortunately, the studio spent so much on the costumes, they ran out of money and had to film in black and white instead of color.
Where are all the dresses now?
🍃💝🍃
The ones that were in vouge magazine
The dresses she wears are the same at 16:10 and 18:38, no?
Supposedly, according to the stories, the clothes she brought with her from Austria were all stolen. They were divvied up among the women who were "escorting" her to the Royal family.
Was there a purpose that the majority of the wardrobe is blue?
Every historical movie from 1920s and up to now is done with contemporary fashion in mind… While it could be pretty I wish costume designers and hairdressers would stick with TRUE style of epoch shown in the film - it would create much more interesting and educating content for viewers…
Outfits of The 'Duchess' will do.
A bad movie from an American point of view. Sports shoes in the movie appeared deliberately and rock music in the movie. Even this actress does not resemble Queen Marie Antoinette.
Why did they let her grown-off roots show in the early hair-down looks? It looks terrible and completely out of place.

This bothered me too...but I think Sofia Coppola wanted to give her a cool girl vibe with the modern pop music and the sloppy blonde hair.
