What I love about Downton Abbey's costumes is that not only are they accurate, but the show doesn't give everyone new outfits every episode. So many historic shows do this, and it always takes me out. Downton's costumes are often reseen, re-used, taken apart and incorporated into other outfits, or passed on to others. In seasons 5 and 6 you can see Anna wearing a day-dress that was once Lady Mary's. Sybil is also seen wearing some of Edith's old tops, paired with a skirt of her own.

Yes! Thank you for saying this! One of the first details I noticed about this show is that the costume designer was unafraid of reusing and repurposing the garments from episode to episode and season to season. It felt like a treasure hunt after a while when I would see a dress that Lady Mary had on and I would recognize it from a few episodes earlier! It really helps to tell the story in a more organic way that these are real people who, despite being wealthy and privileged, have a set wardrobe that they have to work with for a few years and they make the most of it. Even later on when Lady Cora gifts her overcoat to Mrs. Hughes for the wedding shows how their garments were not the "fast fashion" that we are accustomed to now. They were well made pieces that were meant to last a long time, worn over and over, and perhaps handed down to others. I always thought that was such a nice, and very deliberate, detail to incorporate into an already excellent series.

I thought of something else that underscores the point we are discussing here. In the pilot episode, there is a small bit of dialogue between Lady Cora and Mrs. Hughes implying that the girls must make do with what they have in their wardrobes. They're discussing the fact that the family must go into mourning after the sinking of the Titanic and the loss of the heir to Downton and Mary's fiance. Lady Cora says something to the effect of being unsure if Lady Sybil had anything appropriate that would still fit her. Lady Sybil, in 1912, was about 16 years old so this bit of exposition makes absolute sense in both the costuming and the storytelling. But that they were used together, on purpose, makes it brilliant.

The red 'Mr. Pamook' dress is my favorite. The details are so multifaceted with various beading and oriental theme and retains the 'wow' factor with a disarming subdued elegance. There's very few ensembles that can present like that.

Mary, Mary, Mary... I love the outfit with the baby blue top, the white skirt, and the sweater. All of them are beautiful, but that one is so simple and classic. Thank you for putting this together, I just might have to watch the whole series again. 💕

The mauve and lilac the ladies are wearing sometime after the funeral is Victorian half-mourning, gray was also allowed. Depending on the closeness of the relationship, full mourning of all-black was replaced after a certain time with half-mourning. The rules were strict, thank goodness we don’t have such rules anymore. I do wear black to funerals, though. I wish I could find the beautiful, light-colored, patterned silks like Mary wears in that light blue blouse. One would think we are in perpetual mourning, 99% of all silk dresses are black, a color I dislike wearing.

Those two decades are my favorite era for fashion! Especially 1910-1917. The dresses, hair, and the over size hats were fabulous! Also, just the general atmosphere of 1900-1920 sounds electric, considering how quickly things were changing in society.

Thanks so much for this video, I’m looking forward to the rest of your series so much. I think the costumes in this TV series were fantastic and they were very historically accurate. After watching Downtown Abbey for the story once, I watched it again so that I could just look at the buildings, furnishings, locations and costumes, etc. without being distracted by the action and dialogue. It was worth it!

Love the elegant and haughty Lady Mary! Always so perfectly dressed. Beautiful detailed video, well done! The Edwardian period is a favorite era of mine. Mr. Selfridge is a wonderful show and a great fashion lesson on how men dressed themselves in the day.
