A Carny | This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von
Комедия
Mitch Candiano is a Carny from Lawrence, MA whose family has been in the carnival business for more than 100 years. He has worked numerous roles in multiple carnivals all along the east coast.
Theo is joined by a Carny to chat about the wild life of a carnival worker. They talk about the difference between carnivals and fairs, his personal connection to freak shows (and a three-legged man), games that used to rip people off, smoking weed with one of the munchkins from the Wizard of Oz, rivalries between different groups of carnies, how he saw the business change over the years, and much more.

“Gypsies are the navy seals of bullshit” That killed me 😂
@CoffeeAndPaul
23 күн бұрын
I like all the Gypsies I've ever met. It's hilarious to me how superstitious they are, though. I'm a part-time hotelier with more than a Decade of time working night audit. One time one of my properties was hosting a group of Gypsy wedding guests. They loved me because I'm like them, a very strange mix of ethnicities & family histories. We had some very interesting, deep conversations. Anyway, I get on at 11pm. It's Midnight & about a dozen of our Gypsie guests, all guys, are quietly playing dominos in my lobby. They play dominos literally the opposite of how you expect a game of dominos to go in the middle of summer & after everyone's had a drink or 2. It was a quiet, serious game, & from what I heard they were talking serious stuff. They were discussing how to set up the newlyweds, like were they already shopping for a home? where? did they want to stay here or live in Europe? would it be rude to their parents if they recommended a new lawyer as their kids' family attorney, because the parents' attorney was old & maybe he wasn't hip to the things young couples deal with, legally speaking. Then, sometime soon after Midnight they stopped their 3 dominos games suddenly. I don't even think anyone said anything to stop it. They simply stopped, all at the same time. They stood up & walked out the front door. I was curious because I've never seen a group of regular people just totally change what they're doing without saying anything. I waited until the last person left & was out of sight & then I walked out, too. Do you know what they did, why they stopped? They stopped their game so that they could start their trucks & trade parking spaces, no shit. These guys literally pulled out their trucks (it was pretty much all trucks but someone was driving a classic Volkswagen Vanagon & it had THE CUTEST lace curtains 😍😍) & swapped parking spaces with the Gypsie parked next to or close to them. I watched them do this & when they all got out & walked past me I didn't even ask why. Like I said, hoteliers are superstitious people. We are caretakers for a place that some people purposely choose to get married in, some people purposely choose to commit suicide in, some people purposely choose to conceive babies in, & some people go legitimately crazy in (especially in the time of COVID) whether voluntarily or involuntarily, so... I get it, even though I don't get it. They all walked back in & went straight to bed. Then, 6AM-ish, ALL the women in their group from the age of 20 to 70 came down, walked out, & walked laps of the hotel parking lot. People seem to associate Gypsies with chaos in a certain sense, like somehow they're unpredictable or they are disrespectful of laws. They're not. They're very organized. They seem unpredictable & mysterious because most people don't understand their culture. I still stuff grape leaves with the ingredients they told me.
Theo being impressed about him smoking with a munchkin is prime podcast

I love how every time someone gives Theo a compliment he looks down says thank you like he doesn’t deserve the compliment and quickly moves on. So humble and kind. ❤
@roycouch1388

It is a rehearsed response. He has said he has trouble taking compliments, in the sense that the compliment is almost insulting to him. He probably learned this as a habit to acknowledge what people are saying without saying his real feelings.
Need to have him on quarterly. Mitch rocks man. This is the real history of America.
I love when Theo interviews people with jobs 😀

Your never supposed to say 'if' its more like when you win. And you bring them close to you and whisper it. It makes them feel like you're doing something only for them!! He's right about that line of work. It shows you how the whole world is a hustle. With the exception of the truly honest man!!
Love you mitch! Thanks for keeping me fed for all these years. See ya at strangecreek.
The route Theo's mind traverses with his guests is always unexpected. He takes the back & side roads, the scenic route, but you get there uniquely entertained.
Real people being funnier than comedians is a special category of awesome.
No fucking way I used to play Harmonica at music festivals with trp and Mitch was always there with his booth mitches munchies. He was technically our band manager lol Cool to see this!

Just started this one, this guy is already awesome!
Don't know why but i found this to be one of the most interesting interviews theo done. As a Swedish person this is kind of new to me "Carny" people.
As someone who grew up in a small town, i am so grateful for the carnivals and county fairs every summer.

Hey Mitch and Theo when I wrote my first comment I thought about adding something about the dunk the clown or as it was called the Topsfield drowned the Clown he was way over in the corner of the Midway and next probably didn't describe it as well that guy was a genius he was just so right on with his ability to heckle get an aggravated and keep them throwing balls trying to dunk the clown or "drown the Clown". I remember his his catchphrase was "high and dry". There was a rumor about him that he was a Harvard professor. The Topsfield Fair ran for 10 days and it always ended on Columbus Day some Mitchell remember some of those nights got pretty cold. Neckline would stay in that Booth all night sometimes it would be in the lower 40s and high 30s by closing time.
