Border Patrol Chief | This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von

Комедия

Recently retired Border Patrol Chief Chris Clem served 27 ½ years in El Paso, Texas, and more recently, Yuma, Arizona. Since retiring from his position, he has worked in the private sector combating human trafficking and other online and social exploitation.
Theo is joined by a former Border Patrol Chief to talk about what’s really been going on at the U.S. / Mexico border. They talk about the history that led up to our current situation, the difference between immigration policy and border security, how the Cartel exploits migrants for money, the politicization of the border from both sides, and what needs to be done to fix it.

Without someone like Theo, who approached this conversation as a genuinely curious and concerned citizen, these types of conversations always turn into a pissing match between politicians who start finger pointing and blaming each other and it completely blocks real dialogue, and forces people to tune out. This was such a refreshing conversation that cut all of that bullshit out. Learned a lot during this. Thanks Theo!

I'm certain that I don't vote the way this retired Border Patrol Chief does, and I agree with you. I do think it would be helpful also to have someone on who can speak to immigration policy and enforcement of immigration law. Discussion of the establishment of the Temporary Protected Status program in 1990 under immigration law was missed and it was *hugely* impactful to the history of immigration for this country. An administration's foreign policy also heavily influences its immigration policy / how it enforces immigration law. Example: My ex-inlaws are retired, middle class (but grew up working class) academics who were being threatened by government and army officials in their native South American country that was controlled by a dictator. Of course, they were loudly opposed to this dictator (as the US also has been). They actually had a credible case for asylum but decided to come on tourist visas instead, because if you choose to file for asylum, you understandably lose status if you return to your country of origin. Get this: they had green cards within 9 mos. of their feet touching US soil. I cannot emphasize enough how incredibly fast that is. It just doesn't happen that way... unless you are maybe earnest academics who are on the correct side of US foreign policy. These folks were not wealthy - so it wasn't that. Upshot: having the additional perspective of a foreign affairs / immigration policy expert really would round out all of the fascinating data presented by this guy.

@@Nonameforyoudangit yea I definitely agree with the voting thing, and appreciate the perspective you added. Certainly this interview doesn’t dive deep enough into the nuances of immigration policy, which is necessary to understand the full picture. Obviously there is some bias baked into the viewpoint presented, but overall I think he did a good job of being considerate of other perspectives - even if it was just a surface level conversation.

I absolutely loved that Chief Clem was stiff on solutions and needs, and shedding light on reality but at the same time, he also described the devastating situation that aspiring migrants have to face like not being able to get a legal visa due to the backlog. I was a bilingual news reporter on the San Diego-Tijuana border from 2019-2022, the policies during that time + the pandemic + the Ukrainian flow of migrants + the lack of border patrol agents + a new president was overwhelming and devastating. Even more difficult was trying to be a fair and balanced reporter when you don’t have autonomy to state facts as you witnessed them. I wish I could be interviewed by Theo to continue contributing to this topic, the conversation must go on. 🙏🏽

I tried to move my small business from Canada. The lawyers lied and took the money and it turned out that you need to spend about a million dollars as well as be willing to hire employees consistently. They also do not really recognize computer based consulting businesses since the laws are so old. I run a statistical consulting business and the laws do not take that kind of work into account. If you are approved to move a business there you are also subject to a review every 5 years. So if you do not meet the constant standards to stay they can uproute you and kick you out. If your business happens do be in a downturn the year they review you you have to move your family out of the country. So we scraped that route and got a new lawyer to apply for a family sponsorship green card. My in-laws are american citizens so we are guaranteed the ability to be able to get a green card, however, the wait is about 15 years currently. We are about 3 years into the process. The crazy thing is that I would be bringing in a business as well as have the financial means to guarantee that I would not be using American tax dollars for any government handout programs. Meanwhile you have millions of people walking across the border with no issues. There are plenty of people who want to come in legally and bring jobs and skills to your country. Not only do you have an invasion occuring, but it is also causing a loss in the immigration that would actually benefit the country. The reason the laws arent changing is because no political side wants to touch that subject with an 80 foot pole. Its too divisive (and not in a way that benefits them).
