A big step in the right direction...| MOKKA-E Long Term Review

Ғылым және технология

Yes, the Mokka-e is undeniably very, very green, but is it any good?
It's no secret that Vauxhall, part of the Stellantis super group, are looking to reinvent themselves and the dramatic design language of the Mokka-e is evidence of this. As this green machine has been on a long term loan to the Fully Charged production crew we caught up with these camera shy folk to find out what they think.
It's a nice, small and cheap(ish) electric car, with a few shortcomings. As it is built on a multi-energy platform (there are petrol and diesel versions) you simply don't get the back seat or boot space that a ground-up built EV can offer and when you take it out on the motorway, the range is less impressive.
What we want to see are small, cheap electric cars built on a dedicated ev platform, and the good news is, Stellantis say they are coming. What do you think of the Mokka-e? Tell us below.

Despite fixing the looks, the spec is a bit 1st generation. You nailed it in the summary, the next gen on a dedicated EV platform will hopefully give them a competitive car and maybe even one people can fit in the back of 🤔.

    Totally agree about the small cars! Even in North America where I am, there are some cities that are very dense and room on the road and parking lots are at a premium. I got myself a GLS as the result of a “keeping up with the Jones’s” mindset. I got a service done recently and got a C class for a loaner. It was a revelation the kind of freedom as all car affords you in the city… it’s so easy to just pull into a spot head first without going round and round the car park looking for a space where I can actually open my doors. Turning out of small streets where the perpendicularly parked cars are stopped right up to the edge of the intersection. I also forgot how much more relaxing it is not having to worry about making sure you’re leaving enough room for traffic on both sides - in the smaller car, I was always fully on my lane… with room to spare. Anyways, I bought a large car for the luxury of having the extra interior room… I now realize that to have more space all around you is just as great a luxury!

Chose it mainly for the looks and at the time of ordering it was good value and lead time was a lot shorter than id3. Interesting how reviewers get hung up on performance, in the real world most coming from ice cars will be impressed with instant torque even in eco mode which strangely I use most if the time - mainly to save money!Only downside is rear legroom isn’t great, apart from that it’s well put together & fun to drive.

    This is my No. 1 EV at the moment but boy am I glad I don't need a new car now, coz that rear legroom is absurd. That's the price you pay for "proper" and "nice" proportions, i.e., huge bonnet. It's not as brain-dead as the Mazda MX-30, but close. Majority of small sub 4 meters cars nowadays have more rear legroom than this car does and that's just a shame... Hope their second generation range of EVs (say, late 2023) is a big step up from this.

    Corse e has a battery that craps itself when it sees the sign for motorway. Vauxhall could have fitted a 65kwh battery to this car making motorway predictions more accurate and remove the anxiety of higher speeds. In winter its even worse, I've had a very bad experience with the corsa e and will not recommend it. Terrible ride quality from the rear axle to the point I found it dangerous, as the reverberation over an undulating surface made the whole car difficult to corner and skittish, as the weight of the battery for a car that doesn't have EV architecture made the chassis not fit for purpose. Great as a city car only. As for the Mocha being less areo dynamic, I can any assume its a massive financial mistake. Again probably great city car only.

  • @Karras353

    @Karras353

    2 жыл бұрын

    I see it as a bit of a problem that EVs are currently being so heavily defined as "city cars" and whatever label the longer ranged alternative gets. "City car" almost seems like an apologetic shrugging of the shoulders in response to "does it really only go that far?". Now that is not to say that there is no legitimate market for a city car, as I am sure that a lot of vehicles spend 90% or more of their time pootling around a town and its suburbs and occasional longer trips may still be realistic with planning. Some people may even be in a position to actually spend £25-30k+ on a "city car" and get a second car for weekend trips away. But considering that second car with longer range might cost another £40k+ (albeit with cheaper models gradually arriving with more respectable ranges), who are these people who can afford to spend perhaps more than twice as much to get the same overall functionality, split between two separate vehicles? Back in the real world a lot of low to mid income families are going to be looking for a single car that can do it all at the best value for money that they can find. And even if this hypothetical family seldom drives more than 20 miles at a time, the desire for a one car to rule them all results in at least a little bit of thinking along the lines of "but what if I need to drive a long way some day?". Interestingly though Vauxhall's own website is quoting the batter as 50kwh and the range as 201 miles, which makes me wonder if that is a slight error in the review or if it is covered by the "usable capacity" and real world range estimates. Perhaps that is the case as Vauxhall's range calculator for it does put it under 130 miles at 70 mph.

  • @79blustone

    @79blustone

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Karras353 The thing is though most people want a 'do it all' electric car, nobody can really afford to have a city and a norma usage car. The battery range in winter with heating on doing motorway driving you'll be lucky to get 90 miles....out of it. Its terrible believe me. Mocha being as aerodynamic as a brick with the same battery will achieve far less. Come on Vauxhall you can do better then this...then there is the issue with the chassis and handling...👎

  • @Karras353

    @Karras353

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, that is what I mean. There is virtually no way that we would be able to get multiple larger vehicles for different purposes and I'm not sure that I would want to (though cheaper extras in the form bikes and scooters can still be fair game). Most of our driving is indeed done around town and suburbs and longer trips are a rarity. But that need to have a single all purpose vehicle pushes us towards slightly larger and more powerful vehicles than we actually need for day to day use, since there is no point being stuck with some cramped and short ranged set of wheels when we want to take it on holiday or having a pitiful lack of space in the back when a trip to IKEA or B&Q is needed. So that does already rule out a lot of smaller cars anyway, even though a few might have a semi respectable range. But then the current selection of EVs does include a few models that look plenty spacious for the family, yet still offer an inflexibly short range. I do hope that this changes in the near future as I am more than happy to switch to an EV for our next car. But I don't think that we are very well served by what is currently available. At best we would be railroaded into a mere handful of suitable models.

    funny review , thank you. i need to send you a list of things everyone is interested in checking out that you completely missed. why do you think it is important to tell us if the buttons work and are smooth we have been making buttons for over 60 years. yes they have perfected making buttons ( just a silly example using buttons but that apply on the rest of the car) please don't tell us if the seats are comfortable lol yes we have been making seats for many years and yes everyone has perfected making seats. anyhow you all know what i am talking about when you review a new car. NOW on a good note . . . i loved the review and had fun watching it i can speak on everyone's behalf hear you are good at explaining things. keep up the good work

    Whoohoo, I'm picking up my brand new Mokka e SRI in a few weeks. I compared it to Peugeot 2008e, Leaf and MG ZS. The drive experience out did the Leaf and ZS, very similar to the 2008, however at almost £80 pcm less on a PCP over 48 months, it's a win win for me.

    What's the point of having a car like this with 5 doors? At least if it had 3 doors it wouldn't piss you off that there is not that much space in the back. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

    Green! Really hope that Stellantis starts beefing up their imports. It's great they're converting the American brands to electric, but would love for at least one (just one at least please) to come stateside. I do want lower prices, but just want more options over here in the US first.

    try the e-2008 maybe? I really liked it. Drove a DS3 for a while, rear seats were too cramped on that one, Mokka is apparently even worse. e-2008 gives you decent space in the back. It's my favourite of the bunch.

    would have thought the Kona Electric would be the perfect cross shop option against this - range is amazing and accurate (had one for 3 years now, so can attest), rear seats much more roomy from the looks of it, while the cabin in the kona looks slightly more underwhelming. Perfectly functional, just everything you touch in the Kona is korean hard plastics

    Good review. I rented this car for a week of holiday in Portugal. In fact I chose a VW ID3 but instead I got a Mokka E, a supposedly 'similar vehicle'.... Conclusion: motorway range was terrible (215km max on a full charge) and the indicated range on the screen wasn't honest. But it's a good car for the city.

    Like the styling (yep I am part of the problem on crossover cars…), love the green colour. Given the battery size (and range) it should be the same price as the petrol equivalent and so basically the price is still just too high - so B- not B+.

    The "visor" might be Opel Manta A derived, but it's not a million miles from a Vauxhall Magnum or Firenza from the same period. Especially with the ridge down the bonnet.
