I feel jebaited, I'm shaking my head the entire video, you aren't upgrading that with the power connector on the mobo. Then you just replace everything. You know what you did Dawid, I feel played. Well done.
Dawid is a Jeremy Clarkson of PC roasting.
I like how the most roast-able aspects of the PC are the somewhat loser-y CPU cooler, the occasionally non-proprietary connectors and maybe the ventilation could be better. But the cooler and the ventilation might even be non-issues with the stock configuration, since the temperatures seem pretty alright. And the PSU isn't even an 80+ White rated IED! Plus, it avoids the all-too-common 1-2 combo of "single channel RAM, complete BDSM airflow choking action"... For $600 CAD, it seems like a surprisingly well-put together system.
I love that Dawid is extremely competent. And the he always uses his competence to do stupid shit like this. Don't ever change!
When does it stop being an upgrade to the existing pc and start being a new system instead? I would argue swapping PSU, motherboard, cpu, ram and graphics card firmly crosses that line 🤣🤣

I'm watching this on an AMD5600G/6600 build that still has err... The case, the original HDD (still connected, because why not, but rarely used) and the POST beeper from 2007 Pentium E budget PC... It's not ideal (that 6600 is choking) but it just sort of happened, 2 dead PSUs, one dead motherboard, then covicryptocalypse, so it became a 5600G build, because that's what I could afford, then a windfall, and I could afford the 6600... I will get a new case eventually, but I guess I still would have the original POST beeper.

I don't blame him, because if you've ever used these propriety motherboards they constant complain even if one propriety cable isn't plugged in, ie, it's a PITA just to boot. I had to solder bridges that ground the sense pins on the MB just to get it to shut up and boot - lol -.
Ok m8 I give in, you my good citizen have earned a new sub!! It started out watching you "just for shits and giggles" but you've become a solid branch of my tech channels. Keep it up and thanks for making it impossible for me to drink tea and pay attention to my monitor at the same time.
Not really an upgrade though, is it? Upgrade would have been maxing out the socket/chipset that was in it - maybe an 8700k if it was supported by the BIOS - and dropping in a new PSU with adapters. A newer GPU to match the new CPU would have been icing on the cake.
@SentaDuck
6 ай бұрын
You can only use 8th and 9th gen using a modified BIOS and modifying the contacts on the cpu. But since this is a Dell, I'm not sure if its possible and the limited power delivery might require sticking some heatsinks to the mosfets. I would have loved to have seen him try to get a 9900k working on it. I was able to upgrade from a 6600k to a 8700k on a Z170 motherboard but its was MSI which is one of the easiest to do the mod on.

@@fleurdewin7958 interesting. The couple of Dell boards I'd dealt with always seemed to use a crippled version of a standard chipset, that locked you in to one particular generation and no further. I guess it's different for their server/workstation boards.

@@fleurdewin7958 officially 7700k is the max, that is the same with my Z170 motherboard, but I can still put a 9900k in it. The modding community has done what intel couldn't, but whether they can un-dell a dell is another question entirely.

Looks like a really handy sleeper build case. Perfect for sneaky office gaming!
It's amazing how much better that Dell case performs when you completely swap out the entire computer inside!
"so smooth you could lick syrup off of it" is not a sentence I thought I'd hear today.
This PC looks so familiar to me! Back in the day I got a old Dell Precision from my dads office. After throwing a GTX 960 in that machine I had this behemoth of a gaming pc for 2 years. Watching you testing this thing gives me Flashbacks of me struggeling to find the best GPU that only needs a 6pin pci-e for power. Now I have a RTX 3060ti with a Ryzen 5 5600x. Way happier with this system tbh. Thanks for the nice Video!
Dawid! I finally have my own pc and I would have no idea what to get if I hadn't watched your very entertaining and kinda sus videos on pc builds!
The reason they didn't use the 24-pin on the board was to get rid of the warehouse of power supplies they used for the Optiplex xx20 series/Precision T1700, along with all the front panel crap and chassis. Also, you can use some front panel extension wires to be able to use the factory power button and LED.
@zeroturn7091

I agree with your methods as far as solving the power switch. It’s what I did on my Ryzenplex/3020.
its a nice showcase of how important game optimization is
That front IO header connection clip thing could easily be solved with a pair of needle nose pliers 😂 I’m not sure how Dawid keeps from cracking up after “reviewing” an “upgraded” PC. The only upgrade missing was the cooler 😆
@briandewolfe

That was my first thought as well, but there's also the possibility they're using a different pinout and the connector was the only thing between him and dead usb ports
That PC (minus the GPU) runs about $300 right now on Dell's refurb store. With sales, it could probably be had for under $200. Used GTX 1650s run about $80 on eBay. So, I can't say $422 for the system is the worst price I've ever seen, but you can definitely do better with a little shopping. Don't think there's any sense in swapping everything out, but maybe a PSU swap (you can get adapters so you can use a standard ATX supply with that motherboard) and a better GPU than the GTX 1650 and it'd be a fine little low end gaming setup.

I cant think of a better sleeper than a Dell OEM case. Just food for thought, for those that may attend or want to attend LAN parties.
"AMD's charity' That's one of the funniest lines I have heard in a while. Thank you, you made me laugh.
The front I/O issue is probably the most painstaking part of doing parts swaps like this. It took me over 2 hours to do the usb and audio connectors on an old lenovo case. The power button and leds weren't as bad if you use a multimeter in continuity mode.
The tape is there to cover up any scratches on the case.
I’ve been subbed for a year now but only watched a couple videos. Picked a random one last night and now I’m like 15 deep. You’re funny and I’m interested the entire time. It reminds me of hanging out with my old friend Kyle testing new hardware ripping on it.. funtimes
so this is a tech comedy channel lol subscribed
You can definitely make the front IO work, if only just the power button. I've always had pretty good luck finding the pinouts of Dell proprietary connectors on the interweb, and you can connect them with breadboard jumper wires. A little janky, but not quite as janky as opening the side panel and jumping the pins with a screwdriver
I have a few desktop PC power buttons that are really hand for a system like this. They can even be adhesive mounted to the front of the case for that Ultra DIY effect
I own one of these, so I can actually do this "upgrade", thanks Dawid!
Studying the pinout and standardizing a Dell computer's front IO connectors for off the shelf motherboards to use alone could make a good video.
I think you can make that locked cpu run at the max cpu boost frequency all-core instead of at 3700mhz; can't remember if it's only on a z series board or not, but I'm sure D*LL has that functionality locked down
I wonder... If you solder a 20+4 cable(not the cable the slot, I forgot the name) to the board, will it work? Since the solder points are present the traces should also be present and it could be usable.
This wasn’t an upgrade, you just replaced the whole pc!
As a quick and dirty fix for those dell power switch connectors with standard boards the yellow and black power switch wires are on one end of the conector block so you can mash those onto the approprite posts and leave the rest of the connector hanging sideways in mid air, at least if you aren't that worried about the pins beding a bit on your new motherboard.

Woah! That PC performance is amazing, and all it needed was a small upgrade! However, i suggest you to upgrade the case for better ventilation! Do so, and we'll have what may posibly be, the best Best Buy PC you've ever bought!
I have the 3620 with a Xeon E3-1245 V5 and a RX 5600. It always ran really well. I cased swapped because I wanted to build myself a computer, and wanted to get an idea of air flow within the new case.
I’m still working on my T1700 AM5 build, and you definitely could solve the front I/O if you think backwards. I used Arduino cables for the power switch to the headers. For USB 2.0, mic and headphones in, I bought a Optiplex 3020 complete front I/O and transferred the guts to the T1700’s housing. For USB 3.0 I bought a male to female cable then a 90 degree male to female adapter. The 90 degree adapter is important because I can trim the plastic to get around Dell’s metal clip without damaging my motherboard. So I was able to keep the stock USB 3.0 The only thing left is to do some wire stripping for the HDD LED indicator to Arduino cables to plug back in to the motherboard.
Dawid has the best roasts!
Oh wow, I have that workstation at home! Was trashed at work, I use it now as my MediaCenter PC. Even has a Quadro P600 in it :P
you could for an extra 5-10 bucks get an external power button with or without the io in case your using a pc case similar to the dell or have a broken power buttons. (had accidently broke the solder joints on both the power and reset button on my case)
Errrm, that's one hell of an upgrade🤣

I actually saw this same workstation (not gameified) at the Surplus store of the university I work at on sale for $90 yesterday. Maybe you should check out some university surplus stores sometime for some cheap sleeper builds.
"so I went and bought it" I think you got slightly played there :D
Not sure what your long term goals here are, but you can rewire the connector on the switch. Not sure you'll get all the features of the old switch (I think it actually has 2 seperate color leds) but at a minimum you should be able to get power working pretty easily. If you're keeping it as it was at the end of the video I'd try to dig into the front panel too.... IF it's just the spring load thing I'd chop it off.
Some of those old work/home budget PC's were actually pretty good deals at their time, especially if you weren't looking for the best hardware. I remember seeing many configurations that were priced as a whole less than individually buying equal parts. You had to temper your expectations, look for the good deals and couldn't expect too much.. Especially if you had some spare hardware like a GPU, extra memory and such many of those basic PC's weren't a bad deal. Built a few budget gaming PC's with a few of them and they worked really well, of course you didn't really have much of an upgrade path and couldn't play the newest stuff at high, but were great option for parents not looking to break the bank.
Upgrade is code for replace. Lol. Surprised we even reused the case 😂
So....basically the Dell chassis was a convoluted and terrible test bench for an otherwise completely different system? Was anything hooked up to the case?
I just bought the DeepCool LT720 AIO a few days ago. I kinda wish i waited now.
I'm having a Ship of Theseus paradox feeling about this video, think I need some aspirin. LOL
If you take a meter and check power button two wires on that connector line up and can line up and plug onto the new motherboard. Have to pull the wire out and reroute it. Much easier then shorting pins lol
...and no one will steal it! Gota love it!
Those pieces of vinyl tape applied to the case are usually done by refurbisihing companies. I believe Dell themselves actually does this to machines that they sell refurbished. I used to work with a refurbishing company that did this and those stickers are a pain to do and don't really even make it look better.
hey dawid, you remember the "gaming chromebooks"? well they launched a new branch called chromebook pro, basically slightly better cloud machines that apparently can run some games natively(with a great amount of work)
Can 100% recommend Deepcool btw, have an LS720 and it is amazing.
