    When it comes to lights, this is one of those "middle ground is best" type things. Like, there is absolutely no need to spend 2k on a light bar, but spending the bare minimum is also not the greatest. Spend a few hundred on some quality lights and you'll be happy.

  • @Lysdexis

    Yes like spend a few bucks on a pair or 2 of the old school style kc lights they put on the bumper and call it good. 2 on a roll bar aimed slightly out and 2 on the bumper more straight forward would be plenty and not break the bank. Baja style racing would be the only time you'd need extremely far shinning lights when off roading. For what they are doing that massive roof light bar system is not necessary.

    A interesting, informative test on comparing both types. I have been running a LED bar for maybe 4 years, it gets a lot of use being in Australia. For the money I would go the cheaper bar, there is only a certain amount of light you need to see the road for safety. I would be tempted to add a second full length bar to the bull bar though, so $180 is still far short of the $2k.

    Uhmm, these light bars are rated for 'off-road' use and arn't ment to be used on public daily use roads. Because they are like hi-beam and blind the oncoming driver which can cause a serious accident. City drivers who put these light bars it on their city suv's and such...just to use it in city because it ''looks cool'' are bunch of d.... (not trying to offence you, just saying) I dont know in AU, but in EU if you have one mounted & even disconnected and go to car inspection, you will fail it, because these light bars are not for road use and will have to reapply for inspection again specially taking it down b4 the inspection. And if you'r unlucky to be invited in one of the 'car road-side inspections', then also police will fine you because of it and/or even remove your road legal sticker and stamp on temp. one so that you remove the bar and again need to go to inspection to get your car 'road legal' again.

I also would think that seeing more to the sides is way more useful than seeing twice as long... which you most likely won't be able to see since there is going to be very bright region close by. If you ask LD which solution should be used, they will say flood lights.

But I'd have to imagine that 2000 dollar lights are going to assume you have some gnarly headlights as well, since you're obviously not sparing any expense to illuminate the area around you... Headlights are supposed to light up the immediate vicinity in front of you, up to a couple hundred feet. If they had some gnar headlights, then they may find that those KC lights were MUCH more usable, and the low trucks lightbar may not even make *any difference at all* when turned on, once you've got super bright headlights already lighting up that immediate area in front of you, which is where the lightbar really shined, pun intended. The only thing it may do at that point is illuminate some of the area in their peripherals a bit better than your headlights are designed to do, due to not wanting to blind other drivers.. And yes I'm talking with proper headlight housings for the type of lights they install, and beams angled properly down in front of the truck, as opposed to directly in oncoming traffic's effing eyes like EVERY TRUCK OWNER EVER does! "These'r great! Hmm.. I tilt these sumbitches up a bit more n I cn see a helluva lot better in fronna me! N nobody else but me needsta see when Im the one drivin the truck! The cost of Hi Truck is more like $3000 since they bought that extra roof rack to mount the lights over the cab. For that price difference, Low Truck can most certainly address the issues of light depth and selectability by purchasing an additional pair of driving lights to increase the depth of field; and, obtaining a Voswitch (or similar product) to increase your flexibility to choose which lights you wish to utilize for the driving conditions. But hey, “You pays your money and enjoy the ride!” Thanks guys! :D

Less cars on the road, plus, I drive a lot off road or on small narrow dirt roads. I have a lightbar setup worth around 240euro, and it's a kind of lightbar with 45 degree ends to throw light in a almost 90 degree angle out. Which is a killer on narrow dirt roads with dense forests around you. Honestly speaking, if it wasn't for that light bar, I would not be comfortable driving on some roads. Especially not during moose hunting season. I can say that for most people, a cheap lightbar setup is worth it, for seeing more. But if you've got the money and want to light up the night like a portable sun, then go ahead and buy the more expensive setup.

    Man, this video is bringing me back to south Louisiana in the late 90's. Got a 1995 Jeep Wrangler in high school and worked my tail off to upgrade it piece by piece when I could. After a lift, tires, some new rims, and bumpers, my last major upgrade was a full frame light bar with 5 KC Daylighters. The wiring was as best as I could get it being a 16 year old kid without the internet in it's current form. Seems back then they were much more affordable even taking into account inflation. Great video, thanks for taking this near 40 year old dad down memory lane.

    That's the thing. The KCs were 20x more expensive but only offered 2x more lux in the tests. James kept mentioning that they are scientifically better lights but didn't really grapple with the fact that those same measurements demonstrated a much worse value proposition for high truck. I just really doubt that the modularity and look, which is totally subjective, can account for that kind of markup. I would guess that a $500 setup that more closely resembled the look and features of the KCs would eliminate them from consideration. If it could offer similar modularity and looks while at least maintaining similar lux to the lightbar, it's a slam dunk for low truck.

    Well both are great options. The only issue is they're different uses. The KC's would work great in open areas like the desert or plains. The light bar is great in tight wooded areas or high brush. The KC's are a projector light, while the light bar is a flood light. Light placement is a major factor here. The light bar being mounted on the roof makes a blinding reflect off the hood. I would recommend the bumper or on a roll bar in the bed tbh. The KC's don't really matter because they're projectors and will move the light beyond the vehicle. I would still recommend them on a roll bar though. Personally I would just make my own configuration and wire them into switches that operate separately. The $90.00 light bar is a good start. The KC's are way too expensive, but more designed for people who want an easy bolt on.

    There’s also the aspect of how leds work they produce a different light aspect, with led set ups you really need two types of a flood and a spot (separate) flood for your low speed drive and spot for your high speed as you can outrun your light with the wrong set up. Also the cheap lights dim after a moment ( it happens with all LEDs) but can be minimized by heat transfer the better the light housing absorbs and dismisses heat the less lumen drop you will get (basically they are less efficient the hotter they are) Cheap will get you light but not great light.

    I drive a lot in rural areas in deer country. I installed a light bar behind my grille. It makes spotting and avoiding deer much safer and easier. There's no way I'd spend $2k for lights. If I do smack a deer and ruin a lightbar, I'll buy a new one and put it on a different truck. With the daylighters, you're screwed if there's any physical damage.

  • @mikecheslock3542

    @mikecheslock3542

    That most likely is because low trucks brackets were screwed directly to the body while hi trucks lights were mounted on a roof rack. The roof rack is going to more vibrations and flex to get to the lights. If the KC lights were mounted to the chassis, the stability should have been about the same.

    I was going to compliment James actually instead. He seemingly stayed at the exact same tempo for that whole little "song," without a click track or ANY kind of percussion/bass to lead him... Unless they slowed or sped this down minutely in spots, that's incredibly impressive that he was able to sing that at such a constant speed, thus that it allowed them to put a constant tempo behind it *afterwards* in editing! I think James became a musical rainman after his heart attack... It's the only way. If I'd done that, the beat would have been all over the place trying to stay with me at all lol.
