*Intro sequence by @mbarek_abdel**
$700 suspension upgrade vs. $3200 off-road suspension upgrade
Does more expensive mean more better? Let’s find out!
We bought two identical Toyota Tacomas, and we’re modifying them to be fun, daily drivers that you can take literally anywhere, except the ocean.
One Taco gets expensive parts, and one gets cheap parts. Then we test them, to see which components are worth spending your hard-earned money on.
Upgrading your suspension with new, longer travel springs and shocks can improve your truck’s ground clearance, ride quality, and ability to keep all 4 tires in touch with the ground while driving over uneven terrain.
Today, Hi Truck is getting an ICON Stage 4 Suspension System including front coil overs and rear shocks -both with external reservoirs- a pair of add-a-leafs, and upper control arms all for $3200.
And Low Truck is getting a Bilstein 3” lift kit which comes with springs, shocks, and an add-a-leaf kit. Our suspension upgrade costs $700-- less than a fourth of the cost of Hi Team’s kit.

7:49 True, a body lift doesn't give you anymore suspension travel or ground clearance for the frame. However, a body lift does give the body more ground clearance so it is less likely to get hung up on obstacles. Body lifts also allow for larger tires and we all know the benefits of larger tires.

For the money the low truck is a great set up for your average weekend kind of off roading most people do. The real test in my opinion is the long term durability. If you are having to rebuild that set up every 20K miles, are you really saving money? A lot of the higher end kits will easily push 60K-70K miles in a life time before having to be rebuilt or replaced.

Loved the episode, awesome to see trucks and off roaders getting their time in the sun, literally! One thing though: in defense of body lifts, you do get increased tire clearance and increased approach and departure angles with one installed and they are very very cheap. Having installed one on my Xterra though I wouldn't really recommend doing it, takes a lot of time even with help, I think I would have rather saved that dough to buy a better suspension lift.

When I redid the springs on my Old Man Emu coilovers in front, I just used the weight of the truck on the springs to compress them for disassembly. Once it was all loose, I simply jacked the truck up, undid the lower shock mount bolt, and it all came out safely. Did the opposite for Installing a softer spring. With no spring compressor or flying parts, I had it all together safely and without worry.

I did the same exact thing. I have the bilstien 5100s with ome 885 coils. In the rear I have bilstien 5160 with a add a leaf. And for the price point it is very capable off road. I live in the north east and hit some of the areas best off road parks.

A body lift isn't just for aesthetic, it gives more clearance between the chassis and the body to fit bigger tyres which adds more clearance. Usually done with a suspension lift at the same time. This usually does start creating issues with drive shaft angles though.
