9 Things Peter Jackson Got WRONG in the Fellowship of the Ring: Prologue | Movies vs. Manuscripts

The movie of "Fellowship" does Isildur no favours, making him look obsessed with the Ring. He doesn't try to conquer the world, but stays in Minas Tirith for a couple of years, instructing his nephew on ruling Gondor, and then heads north to seek the counsel of Elrond about what to do with the Ring. His escort is attacked along the way and the Ring is lost, along with the Elendilmir.

I agree. Isildur was made to look weak, making it hard to make Aragorn look like the big deal he was. The movie made it look like a fluke or bad luck on Sauron's part that he lost to the elves and men. In the scene with Isildur flailing out with broken Narsil accidentally cutting off the ring, the fearful expression he wore while doing so, then his eye buggering the ring in a later scene, then the ambush made me go "pfft" to the line of kings. I even sided with Boromir when he was "pfft" to Aragorn in Rivendale. I've read the books several times before the movies but needed to remember more details to dispute the film.
Small correction: Sauron didn't make 16 rings of power for Men and Dwarves, they were originally all meant for the Elves. But seeing how his plans failed, after sacking Eregion and taking them from Celebrimbor, he gifted them to the Men and Dwarves.
But Anarion's line did survive, they ruled as Gondor's kings for over a thousand years before the line ended.

Came here to say this. In fact, the sundering of Arnor and Gondor happened because the cousins couldn't agree on who should be high king of the Realms in Exile after Isildur. Weird thing to miss.
@RaggedGothic
22 күн бұрын
This was my immediate reaction to the video as well. Anarion may have died during _the War of the Last Alliance,_ but he had already produced heirs, and his lineage lasted until the death of king Eärnur of Gondor in 2050 Third Age, over two millennia after Anarion himself!
I loved the added sound effects - lol!
Jackson adaptation owes more to Ralph Bakshi than Tolkien in that lots of his earlier story-telling could be argued is a visual scene-by-scene upgrade of Bakshi's cartoon; it being the pre-visualization of Jackson's live film-version.
@factorfantasyweekly

Very true, especially since that was Jackson’s introduction to middle earth when he was a kid.
@gloriousginger
Ай бұрын
THANK YOU! Not many people point this out. I scoured every sentence in that chapter for the "under the log" scene with the Nazgul. I wanted to feel that terror in written form. Doesn't exist. All Bakshi.
To be extra specific, none of the rings were originally made for Men or for Dwarves, they were all made by the Elves for themselves using Sauron's teachings, to 'ward off the decays of time', make Middle-earth 'as fair as Eressëa' etc. Then Sauron took them all during the war, except three that were made by Celebrimbor alone and thus 'unsullied' but still 'subject to the One'.
@hulkrae
Ай бұрын
Exactly what I came here to comment. Sauron only made one ring, which was The One Ring. All other Rings of Power were made by Celebrimbor and the Gwaith-i-Mírdain (except for the Three, which were made by Celebrimbor alone).
Found this very interesting. However, I don't think Jackson made a mistake streamlining the action for an opening scene. It could've been overwhelming introducing additional characters who had no direct bearing on the story.
They actually do show Gil galad with the spear

Yep! He gets shown but his battle with Sauron is left out and he isn’t named. Not a giant thing, but of course as we’re pointing out every little thing, we had to mention it. 🫡
I stumbled across these videos tonight and love them. Very excited about watching the rest. You're doing a fantastic job.
As mentioned in the video, with a series of this magnitude I am bound to make mistakes! I am not Tolkien expert, just a fan having some fun with you all. :) Below are some errors that people have kindly pointed out. Feel free to reply to this to mention anything you noticed I missed. 1. Anarion's bloodline did survive and his sons, grandsons, etc... went on to be kings of Gondor. 2. Technically all the rings were made for the elves, but Sauron stole some them and gave them to dwarves and men. 3. Some of Galadriel's opening words are actually direct quotes from Treebeard in the books.
@BeteBlanc
Ай бұрын
As Anatar he helped them develop and perfect the craft. Many more minor rings were made before the perfected 9 and 7 were made. There is no number. The three were made after he left with the 16, without his knowledge or help. Which you may note is completely backward in the bad amazon show. I'm quibbling over the difference between "for" the elves and "by" the elves.
I remember when Fellowship of the Ring was first released in theatres. Folks who didn’t know it was a trilogy were so mad at the end of the film 😂😂😂.
Isildur doesn't cut off Sauron's "fingers." He cuts off only the finger that was wearing the Ring. That's why Gollum reports that Sauron, whom he has met in person, has only nine fingers.
omg I haven't realized how recent this video is before watching it. Can't wait for the follow up! Sir, you've earned your right to be followed :)

While Anarion doesn't appear or mentioned in Fellowship of the Ring, he is mentioned by Denethor in The Return of the King movie. "I am the steward of the House of Anarion and thus I'll sleep." when he and his men begins their walk towards The Tombs of the Stewards.

Fascinating - subbed!
I can't wait to see follow-up videos on this. I really do wish they showed the fight with Gil Galad, Saron, and Elendil. I feel like it would have shown more depth/sacrifice/cost of victory. But i do recognize they were trying to make it feel "hopeless". Also, comon man, this is a beloved franchise. We dont need fart or squeek sounds undercutting all the hardwork youre putting into your own video.

Okay come on admit it, you smiled (on the inside) when the fart happened… don’t deny it. 😏 But yes, noted.
@thugtrippin
Ай бұрын
Taking Gil Galad out was a good move because he only shows up in the prologue so they would have to introduce him for the introduction only which makes no sense.
Sauron standing in it to break the sword makes a lot of sense to me tho
To be fair, the final duel between Gil-Galad, Elendil and Sauron does take place at the base of Mount Doom, it's just that only Elrond, Cirdan and Isildur are present along with the combatants.
@factorfantasyweekly
Ай бұрын
It’s not much of a duel. Gil Galad doesn’t contribute, and Elendil walks forward to get swatted away like a fly. 😂 As mentioned, the book says they fatally wound Sauron. So they definitely put up a better fight than is shown in the movies.
@Kynokefalos
Ай бұрын
@@factorfantasyweeklyActually they filmed the duel in the film, even Gil-Galad's death but they cut it...nonsense. You just introduce him with his spear and disappear.
Anárion did have children. His descendants ruled Gondor until T.A. 2050 when Mardil became the first Ruling Steward. Aragorn (Elessar) was the first king of Gondor from Isildur’s line. Shifting topics-Sauron originally made the rings of power for the Elves (not the 3, which Celebrimbor made in secret as you said). He only tried giving them to Dwarves and Men as a plan B when the Elves found him out.
Some of the changes I think work better than the books, so I wouldnt personally say its “wrong” but rather different.
@factorfantasyweekly
Ай бұрын
Totally agree! As I say at the end of this video, a lot of the changes are good things because they adapt it better for a visual/film format. I’m not saying they subjectively were in the “wrong” for changing something. I’m saying that they factually got some things “wrong”. Like when Sauron steps on the sword. Do I like it more for the movie? Yes! But is it factually *wrong* based on Tolkien’s original lore? Yep!
Love this, watch the trilogy Every year but never read the books so Im learning so so much from this series, commenting and liking every video to help out and hopefully going all the way through all movies/ books
He got nothing wrong, it’s a perfect movie.
Shucks, the adaptions Jackson made to explain the history of the Ring are niggling compared to some of the gratuitous changes he made later in the film (Elves at Helms Deep? Fie!) and those changes were less horrendous than some he had been contemplating (Arwen at Helms Deep? An abomination!).

Ngl i want the Sieg of Mordor be a game we can play and be involved with
If I remember, the intro to the movies was more of a opening to the film who didn't know what Lord of the Rings was, and for that who didn't read the books. So it was to set up a rough outline like plots that happened in the Second age, with the making of the rings, giving them to the Men and Dwarves, Elves making there own, the One Ring by Sauron, the Siege of Barad-Dur, cutting the hand, the Shards of Narsil, Isildur being killed and the Ring lost for centuries, Gollum finding it then loosing it, Bilbo having the ring... Then fading into legends and myths. Then the real opening for The Fellowship of the Ring. So I wouldn't say he go it wrong, I say he had to make an Epilogue for the movie to say this what roughly happened, and this is what's going to happen.
I had misgivings right from the opening moments of the film, fearing Jackson was taking too much licence, when I heard the voice of Galadriel speaking the words of Treebeard.
@factorfantasyweekly

Good catch on something I missed! I will add it to the list.
I never thought that the opening of lord of the rings was the entire battle.
Thanks a lot, this is a great work. Only one thing, Isildur only cut one finger, the one with the One Ring.

Good point!
Great video, can't wait to watch the rest. While they did lay seige to Barad-dur the final duel took place on the slopes of Mt Doom which is fascinating to think about. Sauron with the ring, which is more powerful the closer it is to Mt Doom, was still defeated by a man and an elf. A last alliance. PS - will you cover Gimli trying to destroy the ring with his axe in Rivendell? It's my least favourite change though I understand why it was done.
@matthewbreytenbach4483
Ай бұрын
To be fair though, Elendil and Gil-Galad were _not_ normal. When Frodo and Sam caught sight of Barad-Dur in the distance the sheer power and terror of Sauron's revealed presence (this being a Sauron that was somewhat weaker than the one who fought the two kings) crushed their spirits from _over_ _four_ _miles_ _away_
@factorfantasyweekly
Ай бұрын
Good points! I am sure once I get there, I will have to discuss that part as well. Looking forward to covering the entire council of Elrond scene!
You shouldn't use a typeface that adds acute accents to every letter i.
Cirdan does not have a beard in the ring sequence...the fight for middle earth is not on the slopes of Orodurin...Isildur is neither wicked nor weak in relation to the ring...Gil-galad's death from the heat of Sauron's hand . Those seem to be missing right of the top.
He did not get it wrong. He made changes to make the story flow better and made it work. Like Yea you don't want Aragorn fighting the black riders with a half broken sword. That's why they made the half broken one to be fixed that ge can finaly become the King of Gondor. Made more sence that way.

I think that the extended edition of the film is a bit too long while the theatrical release ever-so-slightly too terse. I am glad with almost any change the film trilogy made, as it works a lot better on the screen. What I don't like is the new color grading. From a movie I expect to understand every character without prior knowledge. LotR does a great job. Here and there it helps knowing the books, but the film is a piece of art and animated literature in its own right.

Ehh really you list the missing characters but forget to mention Cirdan the shipwright , carrier of one of the 3 elven rings ? Who was also part of the last alliance and actually tried to convince Isildur to destroy the one ring right then and there ?
An important difference to note about Lore Isildur versus his movie counterpart is that he wasn't a jerk. He wanted to stay and fight, but his sons all but forced him to try and flee, offering themselves up as sacrifices to protect their king. The Ring slipped off as he tried to get away, but it was a tragic turn of mischief against a valiant hero rather than a last joke played on a weak-minded coward.

Now you're going to make watch the movies again, you evil person! To be fair to the movie, the narration didn't say who forged the rings nor who gifted them, just that it happened. The only ring explicitly stated as being forged by Sauron was the one ring to rule them all. The movie also didn't say how long the battle was. I guess it sort of implied one battle, but I always assumed it was a long campaign since it shows scenes of destruction in the lands, and then showing the climactic battle.

Ditto with the swooshes, bings, blips and Windows tones. Your content is good, your narration is fine too; the music you could perhaps drop in volume a little, but it's OK as well. But the sound effects; enuff! Think: would you hear them in the work of a pro grade documentary director. No. They're kiddie gimmicks, by kids, for kids. Your stuff is better than that. (Believe it or not, all of that was a compliment! 🤓 )
I do wish people would stop using this fannish meaning of "lore."
I never liked that the LOTR trilogy opened with that massive prologue, and I disagree that it's necessary for viewers to know everything about the back-lore before going into the main narrative. When you read the books, you're not given ANY of that information - it unfolds gradually as you make your way through the story. In fact, I think it spoils a lot and gives away WAY too much information about the Ring itself! Such a prologue eliminates a lot of the mystery around the ring and other characters, which is critical in telling such a story. Why not just let the story unfold and reveal itself naturally? Why front-load the narrative with this hyper-dense prologue. It does not help at all. One can just enjoy the story and learn along the way WITH FRODO. It's supposed to be seen more or less through the eyes of the hobbits, so we should come into the narrative just as innocent and naive about the bigger outer world and its history as Frodo and the other hobbits are! Anyway, just my two cents.

I am currently making episode 10 where I cover the Council of Elrond, and something I noticed is that all of this lore and history gets brought up there. Elrond shares the history of the ring, etc… But those couple of chapters in Rivendell take 3 hours by themselves (if you use audible narration). So while I agree with your points, I’m not sure how the viewer would’ve learned the lore elsewhere in the movie since obviously they weren’t gonna give Elrond an hour long monologue in Rivendell. 😂 If they avoided this AND didn’t do a prologue, they would’ve had to invent a completely new narrative to unfold this mystery, therefore contradicting Tolkien big time. It’s kind of a lose lose situation.

If all you have to do is sit and scrutinize a movie that is over twenty years old you are wasting your life
Peter Jackson didn't get anything WRONG, he made the trilogy " based on the books " not an exact copy of. It take about 54 hours to read the books, do you want to sit in a movie theater for three 18 hour movies. I personally find Tolkien's writing incredibly boring but then he is an English professor. He will take a whole chapter just to tell you what color Elrond's hair is and why. PJ took all the boring parts out and ended up with the three greatest movies ever made.

Agreed! There’s no way he could make a carbon copy of the books. This series is a chance for Tolkien nerds and lovers of the movies to explore the vast lore of Middle Earth! It’s a celebration of both the films and the books. 👏🏼
Peter Jackson got EVERYTHING wrong. While I enjoy the films as cinema, and they are certainly deserving of merit in that regard, I still say that Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the worst literary adaptations ever made. And a lot of the horrible choices made in regards to adaptation often lower the quality of the story as cinema: The dispensing of Tolkien’s morality. The uncanonical failures of nerve. The disregard for proper tone. The elasticity of pacing. The flattening of narrative. The interminable battle scenes. The complete destruction of characterization. The degradation of Tolkien’s prose, reducing beautiful sentiment to corny greeting card mush. The relentless trivialization of the story. And perhaps most egregiously, the facile appreciation of the book thinly veiling a profound and contemptible lack of comprehension of its themes. This is in addition to the enthusiastic copying of an alarming amount of shots, scenes, and entire sequences from Ralph Bakshi’s animated adaptation from 1978.
