80cc Motorized Bike Problems and how to FIX them

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video is a tutorial explaining all the problems that can go wrong with a motorized bicycle and other small two stroke engines, and how to fix them to get your engine working again!
Topics covered in this video include:
- How to make sure your engine is in good physical condition
- How to check your carburetor (different types of carburetors explained)
- How to check for a good spark, airflow, and fuel input
- Additional tuneups that might work
Note: None of these solutions are guaranteed to work, sometimes these engines are just badly made and that's that, but this is just about everything I know about how to fix these things, so hopefully it helps.

    Thanks Benjamin for your clips about the 2 stroke bike engine.Im loving to play arround with those kind of engine as my hobby. From your clips it’ help me understanding step to steps though the whole process. Years ago I don’t have motorise bicycle yet , some time I play arround with lawmover / garden blowing or edge cutting with fit 2 stroke engine with I just start them up and listen to the sound of engine ! My Dad unhappy cause I stuck up his garden’s equivalents 😳😳 I’m now nearly 40 years old I’m driving heavy vehicles for 15 years for living , 5 years drove a truck then I change to long distance coach driver still now but my hobby still there as I’m now love to ride my motorise bike and my 4 wheels go kart 80cc 2storke. Don’t know the law in your Country but in Australia they allowed electric bike on public roads but not motorise bicycle so I had to ride in the back road or bike track ares to ride! One again thanks for your video clips with really interested All the best Jimmy

    Nice vid! Helps a lot. I have a bad ass 79cc 4-stroke build. But just started my first 2 stroke build. Can be a little overwhelming at first. So much more complicated than a 4 stroke. But hoping to get some good power.

  • @BenCarano

    @BenCarano

    4 жыл бұрын

    Absolutely, In reality a 2 stroke fires twice as many times as a 4 stroke, so a 2 stroke will give you almost twice the power for the same size engine. However, because two strokes rev at such high RPMs, they tend to be a little less reliable and require a little more attention, so that's why I made this video to help with taking care of them. I'm glad this video helps, and I wish you luck on your build. I'll probably be doing a pretty complicated build soon putting a Honda GX120cc 4 stroke engine on a bike.

  • @hughstevens510

    @hughstevens510

    Жыл бұрын

    Oh don't worry they're not really that complicated they're actually kind of pathetically easy it's just that everything that's new seems complicated until you get used to it but once you get used to it there is practically nothing to them to stroke engines it took me a little while and yeah I still have issues sometimes but it's not because the thing is still complicated it's just cuz my mind has trouble wrapping around the various functions of what happens with your fuel air mixture so don't worry once you get into it real good you'll find that it stops being complicated real quick

    I just had another thought too because I'm in the middle of installing another engine on my bike that spring tension guide thing you were talking about if you put that on your bike you'll need to get wide cranks. Because it goes on the outside of the cover where your drive sprocket is and normally the bolts are recessed in your in the cover but when you put that thing on there you can't recess the bolts anymore so they stick out in your cranks won't be able to go all the way around

    The uh, "lower performance" carburetor also has a jet under the needle which can be replaced with 5mm thread jets. .65- .75 is generally optimum range. The Delorto knockoff jets or, "higher performance" carb will work for the stock carb also, and I have found this is the one (stock carb) which works better in KS. Many enthusiasts feel the same.

    Two more things any engine you've got that you think might have you know a vacuum leak just start the engine and spray your starter fluid you've got there around the areas where there could be a vacuum leak and if there is a vacuum leak your engine will rev up when you do that. And on the the standard Muffler that they give you with these engines usually there's a screw on there end of it that you can drink it that you can unscrew and pull the guts out of it to clean them too at least I'm part of them yep it was helpful to me just Magneto thing I didn't know and hopefully you know maybe even one of my comments might help you I'm going to try out that new kind of chain guide thingy that I was talking about it looked interesting at least so thank you keep up the good work

    Not to be disingenuous on your prior knowledge but actually the stalk NT carb is actually more adjustable and works better than the hp carb in some situations. For my cases the NT carb will give your bike more torque and the hp carb I have found to have more smooth response and it caps out faster unless you have a tuned and a good pipe.

  • @BenCarano

    @BenCarano

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes! I have definitely found that to be true. Honestly I think the only upgrade that has really made a difference is a better exhaust, but the rest don't really work much better than the stalk components, especially for this particular motorized bike engine. Yah they might add a little more torque, but I personally don't think they're worth the money unless you're in some race and you need to do everything you can to make the bike go faster regardless of how reliable you want the motor to be.

    I wouldn't be able to pin point the exact problem with that as it never happened to me, but my best guess is that it could either be a bad bearing that causes the shaft to shake around a little, or it could potentially be a loose gear in the gear case of the motor. I would take it apart and check that all the bolts are tight and nothing is physically broken. Hopefully that helps

    I’m having a problem with my bike. So I recently got my 80cc bike going and it was running smooth and was pretty powerful, it’s still in the break in stage but I leaned against the wall and it fell and I forgot to turn off the petcock so it flooded, I managed to get the bike running and it burned all the fuel out of the cylinder, it started to burn a lot of oil so I changed the mix to 25:1 instead of 20:1 and it seemed to smoke less but now when ever I go about mid speed it starts to shudder back and forth and the only way the stop it is to pull the clutch in. It will set off and run smooth at around running speed but any faster and it starts to shudder even with the clutch not fully engaged. Any thoughts?

  • @BenCarano

    @BenCarano

    4 жыл бұрын

    Honestly that was the same kind of problem I started having before I decided to build my 4 stroke 120cc bike. My 80cc started doing exactly that, and it's usually fixable, but there's no guarantee. If I were you, I would try replacing the cylinder housing as well as the piston rings. Sometimes overtime when the aluminum heats up, it can warp which can throw things out of alignment. You could also take the engine apart and check for any carbon buildup, as you said it was flooded and even if you burned off the excess fuel and oil, there might be more carbon build-up as a result. Hopefully this helps! And good luck!!

  • @flynnlee2378

    @flynnlee2378

    4 жыл бұрын

    Benjamin Carano Thanks for the advice, I did notice a lot of thick black oil build up in the exhaust which might have something to do with it being flooded and it was running way too rich at one point, I moved the E clamp on the needle up one so it’s running a lot better now and there’s also less smoke coming out the exhaust. I’ve noticed when I start to get on the throttle and it shakes if I just coast for a few seconds with the clutch still engaged and then get on the gas again the shuddering seems to go away or atleast be only a little bit there. I’ll definitely crack open the engine and have a look, I’m not sure wether it would have warped since it’s only been ridden about maybe 1 tank worth of fuel and not for a long period of time but yeh I guess cheap Chinese motors probably would.

    just a update if anyone’s wondering I Think it was doing the shuddering thing due to a very weak spark. One side of the magneto magnet is weaker than the other which might be causing the weak spark. Today I cracked open the magneto case and took the magneto out and then sanded down the the back and front of it to get a better connection because there’s sorta coating on it from factory. So far I’ve tested it and it seems fine without a new magneto magnet. I may still need to order a new one which would be a shame due to this corona virus thing because it means delivery’s are 2-3 weeks longer for me even if they are based in Australia which is where I live. I have ordered a new NGK B6HS spark plug and am planning to put a BBR stage 1 or 2 CDI in the future.

    I could use some help. This is my first build and I just finished last night. I just got it started but it was instantly full throttle and it would stop. I held down the clutch and the engine eventually just stopped. I don’t think the throttle wore inside the cable is long enough because the throttle will only spin about a centimeter. Any tips?

  • @BenCarano

    @BenCarano

    4 жыл бұрын

    Throttle is probably too short or the idle speed is too high. there are two adjustments for changing the length of the cable, one at the throttle grip and one at the carburetor. there is also an idle speed adjustment screw on the carburetor: turning it in will increase idle speed and turning it out will decrease it. It could also be that they just sent you the wrong size cable if none of the adjustments help. I haven't had much luck with the stock throttle assemblies myself.

    hi there. i have a nt motorized bike, I got it back from the mechanic that builds these things and Im still having issues. plug keeps clogging up with oil, oil spraying over the exhaust manifold. i cleaned the exhaust out, cleaned the sparkplug, cleaned airfilter. after doing that, took it out for 12 minutes and it was perfect, then it started its clogging again. I have changed the mix from 25 mls to a litre, down to 20mls to a litre and still no change. what is even more weird is, when i turn the fuelcap to off before stopping, as it runs dry, the bike goes back to normal with the last remaining fuel, any idea whats going on?

    The other day my motorized bicycle started having issues to keep running. I at the time suspected bad fuel so I switched out the gas with a fresh batch and all was good... later the problem came back and I was back at square one! Yesterday I had a good ride without a problem only to have to limp home with a major issue. I cleaned the carb out and blew air through it to make sure there wasn't an obstruction. Next I looked at the spark plug, I replaced the factory cheap plug with one from a chainsaw. That was in prestine shape... test for spark??? No spark! I suspected a bad CDI ignition a few days ago and ordered a backup. Next I opened the magneto cover to see if something was grounding out.. When the cover came off the entire compartment was full of fuel! Now I suspect a bad seal! On inspection I found that the seal was not far enough in and the shaft was exposed on the end. Decided to first reseat the seal by tapping it farther in. I blew out the magnet and magneto the best I could and tried to run it. She fired up right away and ran reliably! I took it on a short run to see if there would be any fuel leaking out and found none. Problem was solved! Had I found this video earlier I would have had the motor problem fixed last week! Hope this helps someone in the future. 🙂

    I have one of the better engines and it’s still a piece of junk. I took my engine after only 2 tanks of gas and tons of problems. The clutch cam already had wear, the crank seals weren’t even sealing the crank so there was a vacuum leak, the clutch shaft cracked when removing it with the proper tool because the metal is pretty thin and the shaft wasn’t machined good so the bearings were super stuck to the shaft, the crankshaft wasn’t machined right on one side so one of the bearings was too tight on the crank, no crankshaft shims there was .055 thousands endplay, the cylinder studs were bent, the case was machined like crap so where the cylinder mounts to the case wasn’t flush making a vacuum leak, one of the crank bearings was already bad, the cylinder had open transfer ports which is fine for an engine with modifications but a stock engine they make no power at lower rpms, the stock carburetor has vacuum leaks because it’s such a poor design. To make the engine have some power and be reliable I literally took the engine apart and I throw out everything other than the crank and the crank case. I bought new cylinder with iron sleeve, a cylinder head like in this video (cools head better), intake, carburetors, crank and clutch bearings, crank shims, clutch cam, clutch shaft, cylinder studs, crank seals. I also got copper head gasket because they seal better, stiffer clutch spring, expansion pipe, crankcase stuffing plates, reed valve, I went with oko carb. The stock and hp carbs were junk and I’ll tell you I am good at tuning so it wasn’t something I was doing so the 21mm oko carb is definitely the way to go if you modify it then it’s the best carb for this engine IMO. IMO if you don’t know much about engines I wouldn’t buy one of these you will have a bad experience and hate it. I would do one of 2 things do some research and find the highest quality engine you can buy so u can just bolt it on and go or I would buy a predator engine from HarborFreight, a clutch and couple other things needed to mount it on a bicycle. If I could do it all over again I probably would have just bought a predator engine they are only like 140 bucks, a good clutch is like 50, then figure another 100 bucks for the few other things needed then you will have an engine you know will run great. I have spent way too much time and money making one of these crappy engines run good.
