Agreed. If your goal is just to _functionally survive_ in the Netherlands you can get by without knowing Dutch (e.g. an internship or job you know won't last longer than a year or so). If you truly want to _live_ in the Netherlands (e.g. form friendships with the locals), you probably should learn Dutch - it would be worth the investment. Or be content with never really leaving the expat bubble.

Agree completely about learning Dutch. I've often heard people say Dutch is such a difficult language. Not true, it's similar to German in many ways but without all the unnecessary grammar. Admittedly some of the pronunciation is tricky for native English speakers.

It was a month ago, I was walking along a busy cycle path while I was eating a nice sandwich when the monthly siren went off, a tourist was shocked and almost fell over, fortunately we Dutch people are used to unexpected noises due to the New Year's fireworks and so that sound didn't bother me. In the meantime I received a text message from Edwin's brother, keep a distance of about 1.5 meters or something. While I was struggling with the sandwich and the phone a mosquito managed to sting me in the neck, nasty little insects! The tourist had recovered a bit and asked me the way to the center in English. Cross right at the next intersection and then follow the signs for the center, I politely explained. At that moment I saw an acquaintance cycling past, with a shaved head, it turned out that he had just had a hazing from his new student association. In the distance I heard the sound of two bicycles crashing into the tourist who had tried to cross the cycle path, how careless can you be? And this is how you describe a typical Dutch scene, without referring to tulips :-)

In many cases society, club or perhaps association may translate pretty well to ‘vereniging’, but a ‘studentengezelligheidsvereniging’ (the type of hazing/frat-culture clubs you’re referring to) is something so specific, that these translations don’t really work well. Simply because in all college towns there are many clubs, societies and associations for students and/or university personnel, but there are typically only a handful or less ‘studentengezelligheidsverenigingen’ that can pay for their own exclusive ‘sociëteit’ (clubhouse)-often in the city center-and only one or two of them are (what they themselves consider to be) ‘the real deal’.

Never heard remarked before that we have more mosquitoes here. But yeah, we're a water rich country so it is to be expected I suppose. The monthly alarm testing is a good thing, but it can freak out outsiders. I read a story once about refugees from a war area (Syrians) that totally panicked when it happened the first time, because no one had thought of telling them ....

Thank you so much for adding your video. This would've helped a ton back 18 months ago when I was experiencing an unpleasant degree of culture-shock. The tulip one just blew my mind. One thing I would add to this list is: Don't swim too far out into canals. Maybe people from the UK know this, but we don't have canals where I'm from. So save a life & tell a friend to not swim too far out, because chances are they will drown in the strong current in the middle, which is a lot deeper as well.

Regarding fireworks: Where I used to live there was a tunnel for cyclists behind my apartment building, and this tunnel was a favourite battleground (for lack of a better word) for children living in the area: groups of school children would converge there and throw fireworks at each other and at passers-by. I'm not that afraid of fireworks myself, love to light some at new year's eve, but I would avoid this particular tunnel around new year's eve, simply because I feel quite attached to my eyes, ears and extremities. Regarding frat boys: have you been introduced to Dutch comedy show Jiskefet, and "De Lullo's" in particular? It's a series of sketches where the Jiskefet members play these horrible frat boys in a very stereotypically but also (to me at least) very recognizable fashion. Other than that, I agree with you - I never understood that part of Dutch culture myself. I was looking for a link to De Lullo's, but apparently a lot of material has been removed from YT and moved to Amazon Prime.

When I first started studying, I joined a student society that 'equality between members' and 'no hazing' as their main selling points. While I understand that nowadays, most of what the more traditional societies do is mostly theater ('just for fun'), hazing still feels very vindictive to me, i.e. just because the senior members had to go though some shit during their initiation, they believe junior members should to.

I would add to this list your bank cards may not work! Particularly if you're going to a more rural/less touristy area. Several places only take maestro and if, like me, your country hasn't issued Maestro in years and switched to Mastercard, it ain't gonna work. What's worse is lots of places are moving towards cashless and then you're completely stuck. So always have cash just in case, but also be prepared to get stuck. If you're coming for a while then you'll probably get a Dutch bank account anyway and your problems will then be solved, but for short-medium term visitors it's a bit of a nightmare.

If you get spooked by fireworks, then never go to Paris on 14th of July. You are supposed to dance arm-in-arm on the squares, especially on Bastille Square while adolescents throw firecrackers among the dancers (called "pétards" in French or "rotjes" in Dutch). I found that quite a disturbing experience and at some point was afraid my calf would be blown off but found it impolite (and not conducive to the love affair) to quit. Compared to that, Dutch fireworks are child's play, although each year some showboating adolescents become one-handed.

So, I just got here from your video about your 7 mistakes, and I have to admit that I had to laugh a little bit, because it seems you added an 8th one while you posted it! Which would be to think that you could mention Sinterklaas without having to shut down your comment section. ;)

Hahaha well the comment section on that video was intense. Basically everyone correcting me on every point I made (particularly with sinterklaas and the origins) so I thought I could temporarily disable comments so I could feel sane again but I didn't realise disabling comments deletes them forever whoops :P

Those awful societies are an old tradition intended for students to build a network after moving to live in the town they study. In general they organise dinner for people that have trouble boiling water for low prices. The hazing thing is probably a leftover from guild rituals. Most of those societies are quite awful, but there are some that have other standards than mercantile excess and misogynist behaviour. Every university has information on the societies associated with it and what the general idea is. In general they are a good reflection of political ideology in the Netherlands as well. I have a nice Dutch word for you to learn. "Verzuiling" Though more fluid these days, it still explains a lot about the Netherlands.

good content. One slight correction, Tulips do not originate from the Netherlands. They do nowadays come from the Netherlands. And the fireworks will slowly be abolished. It simply got out of hand. Too many people hurt, and too many birds, dogs and cats in panic and too much environmental pollution. Your Dutch is excellent. But doing a master in English as a native speaker sounds to me like a bit of cheating the system, don't you think?

  • @p_mouse8676

    @p_mouse8676

How is that even close to cheating? In some cases and jobs it's actually mandatory to have a master degree in a language, even when you're a native speaker. Similar for teaching in a certain language. Studying a language is an awful lot more than just being able to speak it.

  • @ronaldderooij1774

@@p_mouse8676 Studyin a language is a lot of work. But it makes it a hell of a lot easier if you have spoken it from birth. And if you can get a PhD the easy way by doing exams in things you did from birth in a country where students did another language from birth, I cannot see that you can say "it is not even close to cheating". I don't mind, I wish I would have had the shrewdness to study Dutch in England. Easy peasy!

Ah thanks for the comment and good to know about the tulips and the fireworks. Yeah I like a celebration of course but then you hear about accidents and people getting hurt with fireworks. What do you mean with the cheating comment? I wanted to do a Dutch course but there wasn't one available for what I wanted to study and at the university I wanted. Plus my Dutch level wouldn't have been high enough at the time to have been able to apply. You need to meet a certain level and I just didn't have that unfortunately since I wasn't even living in the Netherlands when I applied :/

@@EliseAcrossTheChannel My guess would be there has been some confusion between "master in English" (as in: a master in the field of the English language), and 'a master given in English' (but in another field). I'm inferring you meant the second-- not that I think even the first would have been "cheating" anyway.

They get angry in discussions. - Americans are perfect. If its something bad it comes from another country. Excuse my French? Going Dutch? But she noticed going Dutch(at dinner) is bullshit. She never seen that happen in the Netherlands. - The bitch loved stroopwafels - Pancakes for dinner are weird untill you bring her to a pancake house

I don't think they are that loved in the Netherlands generally, except perhaps by the people who are(or ever were) members of such a society themselves. There have been some scandals concerning hazings that went too far in recent years, so nowadays these societies are expected to "behave" themselves and not go overboard, and it may yet be tighter regulated in the future.
