UK VS THE NETHERLANDS | Which Country Is Better?

This was a suggestion from a subscriber who said I should talk about the pros and cons of living in the UK vs NL. I've jazzed up the title but yeah that's what we're doing!
My sincerest apologies for the god awful audio. The next video also has bad audio unfortunately but my new mic should arrive next week

Lived in both countries and it only took a year to decide which was better. Netherlands by far! Well-travelled, well-mannered, very educated, very friendly, very calm and welcoming individuals. The only thing you would miss about the UK is the companionship, nothing more. So to the Dutch, here's a toast to y'all! Best country in the world in my opinion

I’ve lived in England and found that the English are nicer to be friends with than the Dutch. I hear stories that English in Amsterdam who lived there for 5 years still had no friends. While one night in a British pub I had 3 friends who I still know.

if you live somewhere for five years and still haven't made any friends, maybe it's not the place but it's the person or the amount of effort they put into meeting new people. Actually one of my english friends (Alessandro from italy) told me he loved it here (the netherlands) because the people aren't really talking behind his back or anything, he just felt comfortable. But your experience obviously depends on a lot of factors, like location (amsterdam might not be the best for people from small english towns or older people in general), your own ideas about friendship, openness to experience new things (i'd never visit a pub or cafe on my own as i'm not one to consume alcoholic beverages, but in the netherlands i have a nice alternative: the coffeeshop), where you're from and how you like to spend your weekends/spare time.

I believe the idea of friendship might be different in the UK and in the Netherlands maybe? Maybe it takes more time to make one friend in the Netherlands, but if you do, you can be sure it's someone who's genuinely interested in you, who will be honest, and not just for going to the pub? Just wondering!

I was born in the UK and moved to The Netherlands in 78. I love it here and yes there are things I miss like Christmas and the hills but I feel I have a far better life here with good prospects.its well organised here. I live in north Holland and find the people in the south more friendlier but that isn't too much of an issue for me.it doesent make the Dutch in the north unfriendly its just the mannerisms between the 2. i work with Dutch people and yes I do get teased now again about my dialect but it's all in good fun and I don't feel any discrimination.im part of the team and have made many friends.the uk also have the north and south divide but.. what shocks me though in the UK is the amount of discrimination that has developed with "we want our country back"regarding brexit.yet some of you left the UK for a life in the Netherlands and state you feel that you found it hard to be accepted. seems odd that many middle aged who have holiday homes in France and Spain for example voted to leave the European union. not many bother to learn the language and seek contact with other brits so you wont feel at home with the people.just don't understand the British mentality sometimes and I know for sure that I wouldn't be able to settle back in the UK anymore.

    1) the gap between poor and rich is larger in UK. More people with nothing to lose. 2) Work culture and work-life balance are two different things. 3) Yes UK pubs are better than Dutch 'café'. Way better! (I hate 'café music') The Irish pubs in NL are ok. 4) Public transport is harder to organize when the country is bigger.

British are more polite, caring, tolerant, and are better at many things. I think the Netherlands is better at transport because it's so flat. I don't see much difference between England and the Netherlands. No country is better, but the Netherlands is a smaller nation and can be rather boring. It's just flat land while England is more hilly and has a more nicer countryside and feel to it. The performing arts and live music in England is far better.

England is far better for the arts, nature, countryside, and education. Now, that might be a shock to some because the Netherlands is rated highly in Europe for education, far ahead of Western Europe, but not that far away from England actually. My reason for education is because the UK schools are generally better well rounded and the best schools there (state or private) are some of the best in the world with high standards & better funding. I'm not a fan of the way Dutch schools are set up. The English state curriculum is rather similar to the Netherlands one. But England has more time for the design, technology, science, and arts subjects. Transport though is slightly better in the Netherlands, it's a flat nation and didn't suffer the fate of inventing the train, so trains are a bit better there. Having said that, the transport in London and Manchester is pretty good. Cycling is of course better in the Netherlands but English cities have been investing a lot in cycling. Netherland is better if you want a job and just an easy life. For granted, the country is quite boring. Things work well, but it is boring there. Saying that both England and the Netherlands are more similar than you may think... we are former navy powers, ruled vast navy empires, ruled the seas, invented the best ships back in the day, built our wealth on trade, and both truly pioneered modern capitalism. We talk about the weather a lot as well although the Dutch are far more blunt and honest. The Dutch government have similar agenda than the British government. We listen to similar music, watch similar tv, wear similar clothing, share similar weather and a boring cuisine. Uk is truly the Netherland's best friend in Europe. As a Dutch person I would love to work more with the UK now they are departing the EU.

Very nice video. I am moving to the Netherlands soon and trying to find out the pros and cons when comparing to other places in Europe. I am Brazilian and have been in Sweden for almost 8 years now. So when it comes to vibe and organisation, I have experienced the two extremes (Brazil and Sweden are waaay different in almost everything). But great experiences though. I travel to London quite often and the energy of the city is something I really miss here in Stockholm. But in the other hand, commuting there is the worst thing you want to have in your routine (those tubes...). So Amsterdam is somewhere in between I believe. Half way to the fun, half way to the organised (I know it's hard to reach the Scandinavian organisation, but I am happy to trade it for a more liveable place =). ) Hope everything will be fine there, really looking forward to starting life in Amsterdam soon.

I think inequality is one of the things that should be mentioned and has not... Being an engineer in the UK with an MSc and 7 years of experience I have to say that the salaries compared to the cost to rent or buy a house are very low... UK has a lot of inequality... people in finance are the only ones who make good money and people with money are the only ones who get on finance because studying finance is extremely expensive... I think the Netherlands give a lot more options to people form different backgrounds to develop while in the uk there is a clear discrimination between the rich Londoners and the poor degenerates that live in other cities...

I was wondering if it was difficult at first to adjust to the frankness of the Dutch culture? I find that in the UK there's a big non-offending and positivism culture so wondering how it felt at first? Also, do you find that it's easier to have access to fresh products? (variety of fruits and vegs)

Thanks for watching! In the UK we are very polite and I've heard from others that it can be extreme and go too far. With regards to work culture, I much prefer a more honest/open culture (so more Dutch) but when it comes to day-to-day interactions outside work, it depends. People have bumped into me in the supermarket in the Netherlands and not apologised which I find pretty rude. Sometimes I miss the politeness a bit but it's not too bad in the Netherlands. I think fresh fruit and veg access is pretty similar in the Netherlands and in the UK. I think both have a pretty good variety but I guess it depends where you live. There are a lot more bigger supermarkets in the UK than in the Netherlands as well so I find the choice of food products in general a little limited here but mostly I find what I need

So, basically you're telling us that in terms of practical matters and provisions (transportation, housing, safety, etc), the Netherlands might be better, and the UK might be better in terms of social life/having fun. It's interesting that the first area probably is a bit less subject to subjectivity than the second. It's likely that this Corona season, a general cultural slight 'disconnect' and you still not being 100% at comfort with Dutch (even though your skills are impressive) all factor in in this assessment, and that it would be the other way around for a Dutch person visiting England (or not, depending on his or her tastes). I believe you mentioned most of these things in your video already. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if you really have more of a partying culture in the UK than we do here, and more opportunities for going out and variety in them, too. After all, we're ultimately still a pragmatic, down to earth culture, with values inherited from our Calvinistic past (at least, the Northern part of the Netherlands). It still shows, even in simple things such as "let's have a party but let's not get too carried away/ spend too much money on it", "doe maar normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg", etc.

The English healthcare model is a state funded one. It's not a private enterprise like the Dutch one. The English/Scottish/Welsh (there isn't a British healthcare model, but they do share the NHS) all have an idea that healthcare should be paid through by taxes, free at the point of need, and simple to use. The Dutch healthcare model is not state-funded and is privately run. It's like the US healthcare but slightly better. While England has issues with waiting times (present in other Northern European countries as well), it is because it is state controlled and funded. There's no way out of that I'm afraid. You have a public funded system and that is the result. On the other hand, the Dutch healthcare is the private sector. It's an enterprise where you pay for your service. This means the Dutch system is better - because it's privately run, hospitals can invest their own money to cut down waiting times, while the English hospitals share funding from their local councils. There are over 20 hospitals in each county in England - the finding needs to be split between them and each county. In Netherlands it's private - they don't need to go through those issues. It's simple: England has a state funded healthcare model, free at need, at the cost of waiting times and lesser funded hospitals. Netherlands has a privately run healthcare model at the cost of rising prices and costs, leaving some of the most in need behind. smaller population and private healthcare. equal

About the crime part, just because we convict less people doesnt necessarily mean there is less crime. It can also mean we just let more people get away with crimes or let them off with a warning instead of having a court case. You cant pull those factors apart, because you dont know how much crime actually occurs. A lot of crimes arent even being reported because people know the police wont get around to them anyway. Its just a waste of time.

This means that there is just alot more money available for most people. The exeption would be the uber rich. Im talking the Eton, Oxford, Cambridge people. Displays of extreme wealth are frowned upon in The Netherlands and there isnt really an upscale millionaire culture like in the UK.

I have aspergers and find it very difficult to make friends in England. My best friend I met online, she is from Germany. I have only been to the Netherlands once but me and my partner (from Hungary) are already seriously considering moving there. We're doing a lot of research, but yeah, something that especially stood out to me is I think people are very unfriendly in England (in general) if you don't "fit in". I've always not fit in with groups and people judge you immediately by how you look. Women are especially bad with other women. If I try to smile at someone passing by, 99% of the time I get a weird look. When I went to the Netherlands, I was genuinely shocked how many women gave me a genuine smile out of nowhere. It seems like a little thing but it's just nice.

The pubs, live music and art are much much better in the UK. However if you want to settle down and start a family then the Netherlands is the place to be and she already explained why in this video. There are so many beautiful parks and lakes to enjoy with your family in the Netherlands. Better support for the children and elderly in the Netherlands. With Brexit and covid things are only getting worse in the UK. UK=Fun NL=Security and Future.

You should try travelling in my region of the Netherlands (in and around the city of Den Bosch in North Brabant) for a while. Then you'll see you're having quite the same experience as the one you described with all the delays. The busses will come late, more than 5 minutes too early, ignore customers by driving past, or they won't come at all until the next one is supposed to come. Trains will be delayed as many times as busses, but they won't delay as much in time and customers are notified of delays. On the other hand, the bus stops still have proper time schedules to be shown, but for trains, you'll have to actually walk to a platform to see if your train will stop there and, if so, at which time. There was a time that these schedules were found in the train station's main hall as well, which is much more practical. And why is this? Well, they seem to like it that people are depending on apps and internet on their mobile phones more and more, which really makes me sick, because it appears that there is something wrong with a good overview for ALL people by using those boards, instead of the technological advances for ONLY the people who seem to be interested in them. Also, the chip card you're praising may be more practical because of the ability to just scan the same card for different rides, but there are enough people who try to scan the thing and are not aware of if they did what was intended or not. Actually buying a ticket takes more time, but it gives you a physical kind of evidence that you have done something right or not. A chip card will rather let you 'guess' if you did. This is a problem for visually/auditorily and/or impaired/disabled people, but they're not really doing something about it. And finally, our roads may be better, but they are worked on too often. Specially in places with roads that are not as wide as the ones in the west of the country, they seem to shut down every single road once at least every 2 years, which makes people irritated. And the frequency of shutting down roads is not the only problem. They also tend to shut down multiple roads in the same neighbourhood at te same time and they keep it shut down longer than scheduled, while in the meantime people who are passing by daily are wondering why on Earth they never see a single person working there for days. I'm sorry to say this, and of course I don't really know how this is in the UK, but I really get the impression that the whole network of road and travelling systems Netherlands is arranged by a bunch of lazy people. So I'm not proud of it that much.

Have you ever lived anywhere else then in The Netherlands? I guess not because your complaints seem like you're just an average spoiled Dutch guy. I lived elsewhere in North Brabant, not outside of it. I have in Belgium very often, but didn't live there. But I've travelled to places outside the region of Den Bosch enough to see the differences. I'm not complaining about busses in the whole country here, so if you think that's the case, then you're wrong. It's the company responsible for the service that makes a lot of mess of things in the Den Bosch region. Besides, people from abroad talk about what they think of the Netherlands, which I appreciate, but the country is more than just the provinces of North Holland, South Holland and Utrecht. There's nothing wrong with those places in general, but the country is bigger than that and it doesn't all look or work the same way everywhere. I want to make the people who make these videos aware of that. And I guess there is no country where everything is the same everywhere. No, I'm not that old, but what difference does age make anyway? What is wrong with having a good overview of getting information per boards on train stations the old fashioned way, or expecting some respect for customers from a bus comany which lacks it? And how can people even judge about someone else being just 'another spoiled Dutch guy'? The only thing true about it is being Dutch. No need to snap at other visitors on a site for sharing an opinion that's not the same as yours, not to mention insult or discriminate them on age, origin, etc. I won't at least. If you don't like a comment, don't read it. But don't insult me for who or what I am, because I'm the wrong person to do that to. Elise, these aren't complaints about you or your experience. I still like the videos you make and you're doing a nice job. I just want to make my point here about not everything being the same as what people from abroad may have seen. Most people who moved to the Netherlands from the UK, Ireland, US, Canada,or Australia are living in the western part of the country. There is nothing wrong with that, but it's not the same everywhere. I only want to make these people aware of that. I may be complaining about travelling services, but that is my experience as well as my opinion. But unfortunately, it appears one can't be allowed to share such things when natives who disagree can also read the comment. And that, foreign friends, is what they call our 'directness'. Disgusting!
