75 years after it was disbanded The Second Battalion Irish Guards has been reactivated
An Army battalion that played a key role in both world wars has been reactivated in a bid to "counter threats to worldwide peace".
The Second Battalion Irish Guards, which was disbanded 75 years ago, will see new soldiers hone their "discipline and skills" by performing ceremonial duties.
The battalion’s No 12 company performed its first ceremonial duty with the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Eventually, they will be sent into the First Battalion - currently training Ukraine's armed forces to respond to the Russian invasion - and dispatched on global operations.

Actually the importance to this is that the Irish Guards remain a regiment entirely. They were probably the closest to the chopping block within the Guards Division.

@@anglo2664 2nd Bn Irish Guards was reactivated with guardsmen from 1st Bn and the London Irish Rifles forming No's 9 and 12 Coy. It wasn't created entirely new. Essentially, it's the same like what the other guards regiments did: Nijmegen Coy Grenadier Guards, No 7 Coldstream Guards Coy and F Coy Scots Guards were created from their respective 1st Bn to carry on the tradition of the deactivated 2nd Bn. Now the Irish Guards have joined the party (with 2 companies forming the 2nd Bn). And as Cody Hearne said before, once guardsmen finishing their basic training at Catterick, they will join the 2nd Bn in London for public duties before joining the 1st Bn for green duty (who will also rotate to public duties after some years). With the exception of the Welsh Guards, who currently only have 1 battalion.

It's like F Company Scots Guards and Nijmegen Company Grenadier Guards, Company's from both regiments 2nd battalion's whilst in suspended animation, custodians of the colours untill the day 2nd battalion is reformed. Its really just so each regiment has active public duties presence in London while the 1st battalions do whatever is required of them whilst posted away from London. At least that was the case when I joined 1SG 20ish years ago shortly before we left for Munster, Germany.
Suspended animation seems common in the Guards. 2nd Bn Scots Guards for example. Placed in suspended animation March 1970, reactivated January 1972 and then placed back into suspended animation 2 Novemer 1993.
Still can’t understand why they merged the oldest regiment in the British Army making it lose its name The Royal Scots the Royal Regiment

I, too, agree but there are two trends that make that difficult to retain: Fewer children mean fewer Guardsmen in the future. A shrunken recruiting pool means you can maintain height standards with fewer Guards or remove restrictions to maintain force strength. Women in every Western country simply aren't interested in replenishing their country with more countrymen anymore. The second is that society wants more inclusion and elite military organizations are inherently exclusive.

It would be lovely to see, but being realistic its unlikely, if you look at the number of amalgamations alone in the second half of the 20th century, the regiment which features strongly in my family tree, Royal Welch Fusiliers is gone. It's such a shame because the british army had something very special. You wonder if in the end we will end up with just 4 infantry regiments covering the four home countries.
Bring back the cavalry regiments the government destroyed.
This sounds like some spin to hide cuts.
The narrator does say that eventually the soldiers will be absorbed back into the 1st Batallion, so it's not as if, the Irish Guards has suddenly grown by 4 Companys to double the size of the regiment!

@Ryan It's all a bit of a sham then, isn't it!
I've been saying for years they need to do this due to having to utilize Line Infantry battalions for London District Public Duties. Hopefully they'll soon raise a PD Company to represent 2nd Battalion, Welsh Guards.
Gleaming!
Brilliant however I had a friend who was 2nd Battalion during the early eighties.
Welcome back HOME!!!!!
Really great to see, instead of our great forces being cut all the time.

It's only for the recruits coming out of Catterick won't be full strength and only for public duties and further training all guards regiments have incremental companies bar the welsh guards now
After all the cuts and restructuring of regiments and battalions over the years we have lost some of the history and identity. Yes it is still there within the regiments they was restructured to like battle honours etc. But it will be excellent to see more regiments/battalions reactivated other than history and pride we need the manpower the needs of the armed forces have changed drastically since the invasion of ukraine we need to be ready for anything both in manpower and capability which is entirely possible with more funding, time and recruitment of the right people
That’s great….but let’s keep massacring the Scottish battalions where some of the greatest and proudest history of the British military exists
It’s come out of suspended animation……did Hanssolo come out too?
"..activated to counter threats to worldwide peace". Ok.. but how, by carrying out "ceremonial duties".?! Someone needs to check their phrasing.
Stop moaning, every Battalion brought out of mothballs is a plus for the UK, and a kick in the arse for our Feinds. God Bless all of my comrades in arms.

Sadly double speak !What appears to have happened is that two companies of the 1st Battalion , 9 and12 have been put on permanent ceremonial duties and allowed to use the traditions of the 2nd Battalion rather than re-raising ('reactivation' is so American ) the 2nd Battalion.

Not to mention that the US is a much stronger ally to Ireland than the UK has ever been and we would be more than happy to not have to have any ‘guarantee’ from a lying Tory establishment. They should be called the Ulster guards if anything, even though 1/3 of ulster is actually part of the republic. The use of symbols such as the harp and shamrock by the British army is cultural appropriation. British rule in Ireland sought to destroy Celtic culture so why have they adopted the Celtic harp in their coat of arms? Despite us achieving an Irish republic the British continues to view Ireland as some kind of dominion of Britain to insult all Irish that fought against the empire over hundreds of years.
