75 years after it was disbanded The Second Battalion Irish Guards has been reactivated

An Army battalion that played a key role in both world wars has been reactivated in a bid to "counter threats to worldwide peace".
The Second Battalion Irish Guards, which was disbanded 75 years ago, will see new soldiers hone their "discipline and skills" by performing ceremonial duties.
The battalion’s No 12 company performed its first ceremonial duty with the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. Eventually, they will be sent into the First Battalion - currently training Ukraine's armed forces to respond to the Russian invasion - and dispatched on global operations.

Actually the importance to this is that the Irish Guards remain a regiment entirely. They were probably the closest to the chopping block within the Guards Division.

@@anglo2664 2nd Bn Irish Guards was reactivated with guardsmen from 1st Bn and the London Irish Rifles forming No's 9 and 12 Coy. It wasn't created entirely new. Essentially, it's the same like what the other guards regiments did: Nijmegen Coy Grenadier Guards, No 7 Coldstream Guards Coy and F Coy Scots Guards were created from their respective 1st Bn to carry on the tradition of the deactivated 2nd Bn. Now the Irish Guards have joined the party (with 2 companies forming the 2nd Bn). And as Cody Hearne said before, once guardsmen finishing their basic training at Catterick, they will join the 2nd Bn in London for public duties before joining the 1st Bn for green duty (who will also rotate to public duties after some years). With the exception of the Welsh Guards, who currently only have 1 battalion.

It's like F Company Scots Guards and Nijmegen Company Grenadier Guards, Company's from both regiments 2nd battalion's whilst in suspended animation, custodians of the colours untill the day 2nd battalion is reformed. Its really just so each regiment has active public duties presence in London while the 1st battalions do whatever is required of them whilst posted away from London. At least that was the case when I joined 1SG 20ish years ago shortly before we left for Munster, Germany.

I, too, agree but there are two trends that make that difficult to retain: Fewer children mean fewer Guardsmen in the future. A shrunken recruiting pool means you can maintain height standards with fewer Guards or remove restrictions to maintain force strength. Women in every Western country simply aren't interested in replenishing their country with more countrymen anymore. The second is that society wants more inclusion and elite military organizations are inherently exclusive.

How? Is it on paper? The british forces have a huge recruitment problem. Nobody wants to stay In. Each year manning fudges figures to look good to top brass but alas people are leaving fast. In 20 years only 4 of them have the forces broke even with joiners and leavers.

@R B Ireland ‘turning a blind eye’ is complete nonsense. The security is not guaranteed but would expected because the UK and Ireland are two allied independent nations. Not to mention that the US is a much stronger ally to Ireland than the UK has ever been and we would be more than happy to not have to have any ‘guarantee’ from a lying Tory establishment. They should be called the Ulster guards if anything, even though 1/3 of ulster is actually part of the republic. The use of symbols such as the harp and shamrock by the British army is cultural appropriation. British rule in Ireland sought to destroy Celtic culture so why have they adopted the Celtic harp in their coat of arms? Despite us achieving an Irish republic the British continues to view Ireland as some kind of dominion of Britain to insult all Irish that fought against the empire over hundreds of years.
