70's Commercials Vol. 78
Ойын-сауық
These commercials aired on WGN on November 4th, 1979
1. WGN Station ID
2. "Family Classics With Frazier Thomas" Intro: "The Mysterious Island" (He hosted this program on WGN from 1962 until his death in 1985. It ran with a different host until its cancellation in 2000, but has returned during the holiday season since 2017)
3. "Family Classics With Frazier Thomas" Commercial Bumper
4. Bounce
5. Zest
6. Lestoil Deodorizing Rug Shampoo (3:02 OMG at that Kitten and Puppy)
7. "Family Classics With Frazier Thomas" Commercial Bumper (Damn, that is some creepy-ass horror movie font on that book)
8. Sun-Maid Raisins
9. Staley Syrup (Nice little jingle at the end there)
10. Tide
11. WGN News 9 Promo
12. "Family Classics With Frazier Thomas" Host Segment (It's a little strange that he uses so much of this segment to talk about next week's movie instead of y'know, the actual movie he's hosting)
13. Deluxe Tonka Builder Play Set
14. Era Detergent (With P.J. Soles)
15. HFC (The guy at 8:51 was the narrator on the Disney Channel series "Welcome To Pooh Corner"! I am full of useless knowledge!)
16. Head & Shoulders
17. McDonald's (10 points deducted for failing to make the obvious pun "Earthshake". And those giant googly eyes on Grimace sure were something else...)
18. Tyco Silver Streak (They say this toy train's a bad motha...shut yo mouth!)
19. Reese's Peanut Butter Chips (I would probably just eat them out of the bag too)
20. Hunt's Manwich Sandwich Sauce
21. United
22. WGN Radio 720
23. Sun Giant Raisins (With James Hampton and Marvin Kaplan)
24. Tyco Super Duper Double Looper

"No flakes, but that itch!" is a phrase that will stick in my head until I leave this world.
Greetings from SoCalif., home of KTTV, KCBS, and other K stations.:) My Mother grew up in Illinios, home of WGN!
12:13 - Here's a fun fact. This Roy Leonard guy they're talking about in this commercial hosted Family Classics after Frazier Thomas died. Leonard was a famous entertainment commentator and critic who was famous for his easy-going on-air personality. He passed away back in 2014.
I was cackling like a hen at the miniature bathtubs in the Zest commercial. But I absolutely lost it when she picked up the tiny sprayers to rinse the tubs. “What day did the Silver Streak train arrive?” “It was the 3rd of September…”
Bounce- The interior of that store reminds me of the various "Mom And Pop" Corner Stores that I used to visit as a child. Sun Maid Raisins- Those must be the most exceptional raisins in the world if that boy was so willing to trade his potentially valuable baseball cards to the girl for a box of them.
Unfortunately for Ronald, the "chocolate shake" he dove into was actually a ruptured septic tank.
I've lived in Chicagoland all my life, but was born in 1978, so I have no memories of these ads, but I do remember watching Family Classics in the 80s, and God do I miss the McDonalds character ads.
1:38 - How dare this woman question the long-lasting fresh smell of Bounce! Blasphemy, I say! I love it how all these people just surround her after this.

Don't let Bounce hear you question its freshness! It'll wish you into the cornfield!
Great vintage Chicago TV find! 👍
0:37 - Frazier Thomas deserves credit simply for appearing dignified in front of that duck painting...

The other painting of the little boy was on no less than 10 walls in my circle of friends in the 70's. My Mom and Sister still have it to this day.

That duck painting is fantastically terrible.

That duck painting is almost as weird as the one on the wall in The Addams Family, the one with the giraffe wearing a smoking jacket and reading a map. Now THAT'S weird.

I believe the painting is supposed to be of the duck hand puppet he worked alongside in the Garfield Goose show, or at least is a nod to it.
2:31--I remember back in the 70's and 80's they kept trying to convince us that Zest was not really a "soap." A check of the ingredients indicated otherwise. 4:11--I don't recall seeing the Staley brand of pancake syrup. Per Wikipedia, the brand was sold to Purex a couple years later. 7:36--I never owned this Tonka play set, but I would have loved toys like that back then. 9:40--One of many great commercials for McDonald's through the years. And that jingle--my elementary school actually used it (with different lyrics) for a school song for several years! 10:12--That electric train set looks really cool. 10:42--I'm not a big peanut butter eater, but those cookies look yummy! 11:12--"A sandwich is a sandwich, but a Manwich is a meal." That is an iconic advertising slogan from that time. 13:12--Tyco made some really cool electric toys back then. I had one of their racing sets, though not quite as fancy as this one.
It’s funny how many products I know my parents still use and it’s 100% totally because of these commercials lol
I want that slot car track! Always loved looking at those in Christmas catalogs. Still do.
I remember most of these commercials vividly 👍👍👍👍
If I'm not mistaken the music used in the WGN Station ID is the opening of Roger Whittaker's 'The Last Farewell'. Edit: It's this version: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fnmNsa-ppK3Ohaw.html Also the jingle for the United commercial at 11:42 is based off the theme for 'Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines', just some more trivia.
Oh wow, Family Classics!! I grew up watching this! I instantly remembered the theme music too! Thanks for the memories.......
Holy flashback! I totally had that Tonka Builder set! I saw the commercial and remembered the three modes before they came up! So cool when that happens.
Watching this reminds me that back in the 70's, most people weren't obviously overweight.
I remember the station ID, its music, and Frasier!
The VO for the WGN promo was the late great Bob Bell better known as Chicago's Bozo the clown
That Grimace in the McDonald's commercial looked scary .
Awesome set thank you!!
In that Sun Giant raisins ad, that's James Hampton from F Troop as the lawyer, and Marvin Kaplan from Alice as the sun. Kaplan was also the voice of Benny the Ball on Top Cat.
The judge in the Sun Giant Raisins commercial looks so familiar! Could it be Michael Vale, aka "Fred the Baker" from Dunkin' Donuts?
Era Commercial with P.J. Soles aired a year after the release of Halloween
Ah the 70s were great
I REALLY need that rug shampoo
Sun-Maid Raisins-she would later discover that those cards werent valuable Tide-the commercial i'd write would be somewhat better than that one Frazier Thomas Host Segment-"Since this movie is a dud,i'll just tell the viewers about next week's showing.." Tyco Silver Streak -Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor figures sold separately

What if you'd rather have the Jill Clayburgh figure? (hubba hubba)
You could have put the dog and cat from 3:02 on the thumbnail but NOOOO had to creep us out with Ronald McDonald! Oh well at least we get an ad for the most disco train you'll ever see plus Ernie Anderson V/O for the Super Duper Double Looper!
Uh, Fraze? About that duck...
