70's Commercials Vol. 97

Ойын-сауық

These commercials aired on NBC on December 22nd, 1978
1. Crazy Eddie (Partial, even though it's just a few seconds it's neat to post a Crazy Eddie ad from the 70's!)
2. King Tut? (Most likely about the traveling "Treasures Of Tutankhamen" exhibition: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhibit... that inspired Steve Martin’s “King Tut”)
3. Texaco (These aired during "Bob Hope's All Star Christmas Special", sponsored by Texaco)
4. "The Bob Hope All Star Christmas Special" Promotional Bumper
5. Texaco Havoline Super Premium (With race car driver Janet Guthrie)
6. Dristan
7. Primatene Mist and Tablets
8. Promo for "Christmas Miracle In Caufield, U.S.A." (This movie was a repeat from 1977. This was just about a month before Kurt Russell starred in the TV biopic "Elvis" in 1979 on ABC which ended his post-Disney career slump and also started his long collaboration with director John Carpenter)
9. Texaco Havoline Super Premium
10. "The Bob Hope All Star Christmas Special" Promotional Bumper
11. Texaco
12. "The Bob Hope All Star Christmas Special" Commercial Bumper
13. Promo for "Amahl And The Night Visitors" and "Huckleberry Finn" (This was the 1974 film musical version starring Jeff East and Paul Winfield)
14. US Home
15. WNBC NewsCenter 4 Bumper
16. Anacin
17. Canon AE-1
18. Promo for "Little House On The Prairie" and "Sunshine Christmas" (Featuring Cliff DeYoung aka the dad from "Flight Of The Navigator" doing his best John Denver impression. This was a sequel to the 1973 TV movie "Sunshine")
19. Texaco
20. "The Bob Hope All Star Christmas Special" Promotional Bumper
21. Texaco Havoline Super Premium
22. "The Bob Hope All Star Christmas Special" Ending (What he says here feels very relevant for today. I can actually sense that he's holding back some genuine emotions around 7:55 which is kind of rare considering Hope's wisecracking TV persona)
23. Texaco and Dristan Sponsorship Plugs
24. "The Bob Hope All Star Christmas Special" End Credits
25. Red Cross PSA
26. Promo for "AFC Playoff"
27. NBC News Update
a. SALT Treaty (SALT stood for Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. The SALT II treaty was signed in Vienna in June 1979 but was never ratified by the legislative bodies of either side after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan later that year, though both sides abided by it)
b. Italian airliner crashes in ocean (They crashed thinking they were closer to the runaway than they were, 21 of the 129 passengers survived)
c. Jim Jones/Jonestown (Whatever this ruling was it was wrong, he committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot)
d. Consumer Prices up 0.5%
28. Geritol (The end appears to have been cut off by the station)
29. Promo for "The Stingiest Man In Town" (An ok animated adaptation but it's a shame Walter Matthau never played Scrooge in live action with Jack Lemmon as Marley's ghost)
30. Promo for "The Tonight Show"
31. Babe Fragrance by Faberge (With Margaux Hemingway)
32. TV Spot for "Brass Target"
33. WNBC News Bumper
34. TV Spot for "Every Which Way But Loose"
35. Coca Cola

    16. Anacin- The way those medicine bottles are arranged in a circle at 4:49, it looks like they’re having a secret meeting, plotting world domination like a group of Evil Villains.

That Texaco commercial with the owl, rabbit and turtle must have had some great outtakes. Very well trained animals, I have to admit.

The traveling King Tut exhibit was currently at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in December 1978 so that could have been a promo for it, that was from WABC before the Bob Hope special on WNBC. But yeah that closing monologue hit me right in the feels too! Relevant nearly 45 years later!

Regarding the AFC wild-card promo, in addition to being a rematch of the November 20 Monday Night classic where Earl Campbell ran for 199 yards and 4 touchdowns; this was the first season after (among many changes in 1978 including expanding to a 16-game schedule and several rule changes to open up scoring) the playoff field expanded to 10 teams. Miami ended up managing to bottle up Campbell early (16 first half yards and 84 total) but ended up losing 17-9 thanks to Oilers quarterback Dan Pastorini throwing for 306 yards and a touchdown

I will always love that Coca Cola commercial. Nice to see Janet Guthrie whose name I knew but had never seen.

0:42 and 2:34--Wow; I had forgotten that there was a female auto racing champion that far back. I looked up Janet Guthrie and found out that she was actually born in my home state of Iowa. 3:11--Even Texaco did its own take on the "tortoise and the hare" fable. 4:42--I remember the aspirin/pain reliever wars of the 70's very well. 5:43--Little House On the Prairie is rerunning on Cozi TV, a retro network available over the air in many parts of the country. 11:01--Another retro network, Antenna TV, is rerunning Tonight Show episodes from the Carson era, rebranded as just "Johnny Carson" since NBC owns (and still uses) the Tonight Show branding. 12:49--One of many great jingles used by Coca Cola over the years. I believe this one started out as a Coke jingle and was adapted into a pop song. Usually it's the other way around.
