70's Commercials Vol. 88

Ойын-сауық

These commercials aired on CBS on November 16th, 1978
1. "Hawaii Five-0" Commercial Bumper
2. Harveys Bristol Cream
3. Arrid Extra Dry (With Tina Louise. If only they'd had a few cans of this stuff on the island...the professor probably could have used them to propel a raft or something)
4. Anacin (1:10 The epic Anacin/Pong crossover that everyone has been waiting for!)
5. Promo for "The Bible" (I watched this a while back and the tone of it is very stark...appropriate for some of those bleak stories from the old testament)
6. Beneficial
7. 1979 AMC Concord
8. General Electric Televisions
9. "Hawaii Five-0" Commercial Bumper
10. Promo for "The Star Wars Holiday Special" (YES! It's amazing to post a promo for this infamous television disaster. Set your VCR's everyone, because it's NEVER airing again!) and "Flying High" (Every promo that I've posted from this show makes it look like softcore porn)
11. Kenny King's (If you're confused as to why they're advertising Kentucky Fried Chicken at this other restaurant, Kenny King's was the exclusive KFC franchisee for the Cleveland area and held the rights to sell their chicken until the late 90's)
12. WJKW Station ID/Promo Bumper
13. "Hawaii Five-0" Commercial Bumper
14. JCPenney Battery
15. United Airlines
16. Polaroid Sonar One Step Cameras
17. Master Charge (Renamed to MasterCard in 1979)
18. Cup O' Noodles (Despite not sounding like the name of a real person, JoJo Starbuck was a pair skating champion and competed in the 1968 and 1972 Olympics)
19. Lancers Rose
20. Next on "Hawaii Five-O" (The actress at 8:29 is Jean Marsh, probably best known to us traumatized 80's kids for playing Mombi the witch in "Return To Oz")
21. Promo for "60 Minutes", "All In The Family", "Alice", "Lucy Comes To Nashville" and "Dallas"
22. "Hawaii Five-0" End Credits
23. Promo for "Bobby Vinton's Rock 'N Rollers" (The girl seen at the beginning and end of this promo and the earlier "Star Wars Holiday Special" promo is actress Valerie Bertinelli, who appeared on the CBS sitcom "One Day At A Time")
24. Promo for "The Pirate"
25. American Lung Association PSA
26. CBS Station ID
27. Great Western Champagne
28. Ohio Edison (Wow at the wide collared shirts and jackets in this. You work at the freaking electric company, not a disco suit emporium!)
29. WJKW Station ID
30. WJKW Newscenter Newsbreak (Unfortunately the recording fades out here)

Promo For "The Bible"- Without the announcer narrating this commercial for this movie, I would have thought that this was a promo for a Horror-Slasher movie taking place in ancient times, including the Stone Age. American Lung Association PSA- The girl doing this PSA looked like she was half asleep throughout until she smiled at the end.

Hawaii 5-0 the original was such a long-running show, it's amazing how recording technology changed over the course of its run. When it started in 1968 you had pretty primitive (by today's standards) recording tapes, few of which survive today. By the time it ended in 1980, you had Betamax with more media that survives to this day.

I'm a '77 baby, 80's kid, 90's teen, and '00's adult, but im very fascinated by pop culture history; before and during my time. The date here says NOVEMBER 16, 1978. Two days before the Jonestown massacre. Then I see this Hawaii 5-0 preview of "The Miracle Man". COINCIDENCE?!? 🤨🤨 hmmmm......

Yes. It's a coincidence. This Hawaii Five-O episode was most likely based on Jim Jones, but was obviously written and produced well before the Jonestown massacre and was not actually aired until over a month after this on December 21st, 1978. The airing of this episode was most likely delayed due to the Jones connection. BTW Jim Jones was in the news well *before* the massacre. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Jones#Mounting_pressure_and_waning_political_support

The Harvey's Bristol Cream ad was the inspiration for a hilarious parody on SNL with Gilda Radner and Bill Murray.

WJW seriously needs to go back to its CBS affiliation, or better yet, it shouldn't have switched to Fox.

Oh man I've seen the Star Wars Holiday Special commercials from the Rifftrax presentation (now available here on YT except for the animated Boba Fett segment) and these are from around the same time! One of the riffs during their version was "Flying High, we don't even have a Wikipedia entry!" Now, it does! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_High_(TV_series)

@@80sCommercialVault Yeah I meant to say it was awesome to have an ad FOR the upcoming SWHS during this volume that came the day before! Some of the ads for the CBS programming were also on the night of the special! This was a good video!
