I found out (the hard way!) that the more stuff I have, the longer cleaning will take. I have recently started taking everything out of a room, except large, and necessary furniture, and plants. You're supposed to live with the space for 24 hours, then just bring back in what you really need and love. I like the uncluttered look so much, I live with it all week! I also take the chance to give things a good clean. Living without the stuff in my living space helps me to let go of it, too.

Although my room is minimal, lately I have been feeling the call to minimize even more. The Japanese simple life is beautiful and my room is also inspired by the design. ❤ Thank you for all the helpful tips Aki! 😊

When I practiced a more Buddhist lifestyle, I've always had a phrase in my head, "Messy room, messy mind." Over the years it's helped me greatly reduce the amount of unnecessary things and to create that space you mentioned. I love that computer desk idea with the smaller drawers! 😊

Interesting and you don't practice said lifestyle anymore? What happened if you don't mind me asking? One my sisters is a practicing Buddhist and she finds that it helps calm her ADHD mind as she goes about her day.

@@thelifewithnate I feel like I did everything to be the "perfect" Buddhist - and that's where I went wrong, haha. Perfection is silly. There's nothing wrong with meditation, it's just that my hardcore approach to it made me lose my sense of self. While I don't have ADHD, I believe routine and a regular meditation practice would greatly help your sister. I hope she finds comfort in it like I did.

I have always found the Japanese way of living respect worthy and fascinating. Personally I feel the more one grows spiritually the more one gets drawn towards minimalist lifestyle. Once you start decluttering your mind and soul you naturally want to declutter your physical environment.....!

The concept of a clean room is one that cannot be overestimated! I find that when my home or surroundings are dirty, it creates a ton of additional unconscious stress for me as I try to go about my day. Like when I go to my normal day job and the apartment is a mess, all I think about is "dang, I need to clean everything up today!" and I run out of time! I got to implement some of these tips just to breathe more normally. Arigato, Aki!

I have been doing well with minimizing so far but I love the idea of a theme so much! I chose the theme “heart and forge” after your advice. I even write it (badly 😅) in caligraphy and hung it on the wall! I chose this because I only have one room to pack everything I am in, so I will now only allow things that are close to my heart and that support my creative work. 🎉

It’s the kind of thing I unconsciously know; “I have too many of this item!” But we’re so conditioned to want to consume and buy cool new stuff, and we might have a bad day and buy something we already have too many of, just because. And I know it’s not making me happy! But I do it anyway. It’s definitely pens/art supplies for me. But looking around my house, I notice also: -coffee mugs -Blankets -Hair ties -Random little toys All of these are the kinds of things I tend to buy when I’m depressed. And it makes me feel better for a second, but then I get it home and the stress sets in! Where is this going to go? Do I even have room for it?! I’ll try to remember this next time I’m out and I’m in a bad mood!

Thank you for yet another exceptional video. Since I started following your content, I've noticed a positive transformation in my life. While I may not embrace minimalism to the extent you do, I've made a conscious effort to incorporate many of your insightful tips into my daily routine. I've stopped impulsively buying unnecessary things, gotten rid of some unnecessary items, but most importantly, you've awakened motivation in me to clean up. I used to dread cleaning at home, but your videos have changed my attitude towards this task. I no longer see cleaning as an unpleasant duty but as a way to relieve stress and bring order not only to my surroundings but also to my life. Greetings from Slovakia.

as a tea student myself, I noticed some of these principles creeping into my life, too, the longer I practise. Such as assigning places, minimizing on the essentials, focusing on the beauty of the space and minimizing storage - after all: We do not LIVE in the storage. Life is activity and that means space. And I do find these changes extremely liberating. Still, you gave me some more ideas like the 5 second rule and the number of items. Thank you 🙏

Determining the theme of the room is such a helpful idea. I’m definitely going to use that. I also really like the idea of limiting the number of items to 3 or 5. I’m also going to use this. I was at the store yesterday and they had a really good sale on shoes. There were quite a few in my size that I really liked and I do need new shoes. But I couldn’t figure out how many I needed at the store. I didn’t buy any because I just couldn’t make a decision. Having a pre set number is such a helpful tool.

"if something feels bothersome people tend not to do it" - yes. We got a battery powered vacuum cleaner as a gift. We've been using it a ton since then. Much more than the "normal" one. It's easier to get started, easier to clean the dust when it gathers in the container (container is smaller), no cables to fiddle around with when you go around the house. No need to look for a socket to turn it on. All these small things make it like 2 times more enojable to use.

I work with a person and for a person both who are keepers of everything. the boss owns the place and sees everything (even if it don't work well) as later a price for retirement, the building is to me a storage unit, but stays in the back rooms. Now my co worker who is also my daughter, is allowed to (we both are actually) to have projects at work to keep busy during down time. But she has so many and they are all over the shelves and such, in the area where we sit. We have a small space but many shelves. I have very little space and this is after she cleans up. She does sell her stuff, but I mentally am overwhelmed most days. My car is my go between and I want to keep it clean for my own piece of mind.

I am actively working on getting rid of excess/unneeded things in my man cave, and having a designated place for all of my belongings. Less things, and a designated place for what I keep makes for a less stressful daily life.

Thank you so much for this video Aki, I love how you use the framework of the Chanoyu as a template for everyday life! Much appreciated, and very helpful. I am still hoping you will make a detailed video of the chanoyu ceremony ( step by step instructions) and especially how you use your travel kit 🤞🏼
