7 Reasons You SHOULD NOT Get A Female German Shepherd

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

7 Reasons You SHOULD NOT Get A Female German Shepherd. If you're considering owning a female German Shepherd, it's important to be aware of both the pros and cons of this wonderful breed.
On the positive side, female German Shepherds are known for their loyalty and protective nature, making them excellent guard dogs and loyal companions. They are also highly intelligent and trainable, which makes them ideal for tasks such as search and rescue, police work, and even therapy dogs.
However, there are also some downsides to owning a female German Shepherd. For one, they can be quite territorial and possessive, which can lead to aggression if they feel threatened or if their territory is being invaded. They can also be prone to health issues such as hip dysplasia, which can be expensive to treat. Additionally, they require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, and may become destructive if they don't receive enough attention or exercise.
Ultimately, owning a female German Shepherd can be a rewarding experience, but it's important to be aware of the potential challenges before making the commitment to bring one into your home. With proper training, socialization, and care, however, these loyal and intelligent dogs can make wonderful additions to any family.

My female GSD was the most beautiful and loving dog I ever had. Sheila was used as a puppy breeding machine until she turned 8 years old. She had a brilliant pedigree, all German, and was a straight back, so didn't have hip problems. She lived till she was 14 years old, our male GSD collapsed with hip problems at 9 years. My experience with GSD is that females are more loving and amazing with children.

I disagree with my female shepherd to Clingy & always start the barking outside. My male Rottweiler is so good outside until she starts the barking shit. He plays with the kids like a gentle giant and protective of entire family. When she plays with the kids, meaning the female shepherd is very friggly. The last female & male shepherds we had were golden!!! He lasted 12 years and Her 14 years. I've been around Rottweilers since 1975 , I help cleaning & walking my friends' dogs. Since 1990, that's the only dog i would ever have male Rottweilers. The females are very spiteful had two female Rottweilers never again.

I am a Zoology grad that lived where there are many wolves. I am most interested in Canine biology and have studied canine ethology most of my life. There is a sexual difference in male to females in German Shepherds. I have had many over my life, my preferred breed. Dr. Stanley Coran's group has said that German Shepherds are the breed most like the wolf behaviorally. Female Shepherds are most interested in the Family unit. They become obsessed with the family. while males are into the protection of the property, females are too to a lessor degree. My last Shepherd was a female, and I think she was a wonderful protector for my wife, who died of Alzheimer's, the Grand Children and one of the very smartest shepherds that I have ever owned. It was a male Shepherd that saved my ex's life. Lucky people have security systems. The Very fortunate have a Shepherd.

I’m sorry to hear about your wife. I’m a retired nurse, seen my share. We just picked up our 3rd GS. Our first was a female. She lived to 11. Monte, who passed unexpectedly last Thursday was almost 10 but volvulus (always my nightmare) took him. An exceptional dog in every way. Now our female is almost 12 weeks. Monte was a piece of cake to train. This female pup is proving to be a tad stubborn and vocal but, I like it. Everyone loves their dogs. Everyone of them are the best. German Shepherd’s have that something else that that proves elusive to describe. The protection is paramount to me. I live in rural Maine. About 8 years ago there was a string of home burglaries in the area. Went to a local meetup with State Police and they said no home with a dog was burglarized. I had a big smile hearing that. I appreciate your post here. I love wolves. I saw a large one around 20 years ago nearby. Nobody believed me but, I know a coyote from a wolf. Also, Monte sang (not howled) along with my harmonica playing. When he sang he took it seriously. Like his whole heart was into it. There’s a clip on KZread with someone playing Ave Maria on drinking glasses. Monte sang along to this with near perfect pitch. Very solemn when he did this. I’m still not over him. The snow is melting and with it his paw prints are disappearing by the hour. I weep for him. I miss him. But, this puppy is in a home of love. She knows that. To me, German Shepherd’s just want to be with you. Period. They want to herd you. Monte surely thought I couldn’t move around the house without his direction! It’s extremely endearing. Like I always said to Monte “You’ve got my back and I’ve got yours!” Regards

@@bebopredux Wow I feel sorry for people that don't get to see wolves. Literally every time I went West to Banff, I saw wolves. They were in the tree line watching. One time I stopped my car to open my Gator Aid I looked up and I had Timber wolves surrounding my car. I was in a VW Jetta so they were looking down at me. 7 or 8 of them. On all sides. There is real love in a Shepherd for her family. When my wife passed, my dog got up and walked away., she knew it was over. But when her friends came to get her clothes for the women's shelter, my dog picked up my wife's tennis shoes and walked off. She kept those shoes in one of her beds around the house until the day that she died. If you think about it, a dogs primary sensory input is their sense of smell. Not their eyes like a primate. She kept a memento of my wife in the best way that she could.

I was also a Zoology grad and have had 25 years of pairs of GSDs. They all protected me and my husband. Once it was 2 female and a male to chased away a burglar all together late at night. Last was a lone female who blocked a burglar inside the house for 20 minutes until the police came. She was perfect ,is now 10 and very healthy, never a single medical problem. My young male is the most active and highest German line working dog I have ever had. He barks at every stranger, but is very friendly when I signal him to be. He is only 2 years old. He and my older Heidi work well together in protection.

Our female GSD was not only breathtakingly gorgeous, she was obedient, loyal, protective, brave, sweet, loving, and lived to age 13. The problem with GSD's, m or f, is extreme breeding that destroys the hips. The challenge with female GSD's is not the dog but irresponsible owners. People who won't devote the expense and effort a dog of any kind requires don't deserve to own or be loved by one, especially a GSD.

I have a female Czech German Shepherd, none of this is no big deal. They are very smart and true, they are dormant and protective. They also are very affectenent to the one person they choose as their master. Not only that, but they are very jealous as well. But don't let this keep you from an awesome dog. The biggest thing is to make sure they get enough exercise. I have to play ball with mine twice a day to get the energy out of her. They are not dogs for couch potatoes. Plus, I take her for walks 2 to 3 times a week. They love to explore. They are herding dogs, after all. They love to play too. And they love to learn, it builds their confidence. The more time you spend with your GSD teaching them tricks or walking or agility tracking or defense, the better they like it, I love my GSD

I had an GS//Japanese Akita crossbreed and for our 11years together she was settled, outside regarding those issues you’ve mentioned. During her seasonal X2, she’d’ bash out a couple of minutes worth of frustrations out of my bedroom pillows - but could take a verbal telling off without aggressive reaction.. she also had an adorable, mutual, respectful goofy character -which, just like humans, showed a different side dependant on who in the family she was entertaining. She died in March, 6wks after my husband’s passing. Obviously, it’s very, very different without them, but she & my husband we’re a ‘team’ thanks for helping understand the care & vigilance needed for the female dog. Best wishes, JaneR

My oldest brother had two German Shepherds, Rebel and Brandy; a brother and sister from the same litter. I don't remember if David got them in the late 1980s, or in the early 1990s. They were so sweet. We babied them their whole lives. They both died of cancer in the early part of this century. Rebel died first and Brandy a year later. Their vet used to tell us that Rebel and Brandy were the gentlest German Shepherds they had ever seen. They would let the doctor do anything he needed to, to them. They loved me. I was their favorite "uncle". If I was in the yard with them, and someone drove up that they did not know, they would get in front of me and sit, or stand; but they would smile at that person. They would not growl, or snarl, or act aggressive at that person; but if you have a functioning brain, and valued your life, you would not get any closer; because they would have killed you. They were the same way with my brother's two granddaughters who were like four and six at the time. We didn't train them to be that way. We loved them and respected them and let them be themselves. We didn't try to be too controlling. I miss them so much. After Rebel and Brandy died, we got wolves. They're all gone now. David's two wolves loved me. If I was in the pen with them, and some stranger came by, or a strange dog came by; they would not let me leave the pen until that person or dog was gone. They would not let me near their gate. They were all incredibly smart, the Shepherds and the wolves.

I have owned and raised female German Shepherds never owned a male and I can tell you without a doubt they are extremely intelligent eager to please and great with children. They become their nannies never leave their side. They do not tire so easily. My females are always ready to go out for walks and runs and some are protective it all depends how you raise them. If you don't associate any German Shepherd they can get aggressive. If your not going to breed them get your female spayed so you don't have to worry about the heat cycle, pregnancy or them getting annoying. It's not that big of a deal. Spaying also helps prolong their life and I recommend to get them spayed before their first heat cycle . I always do never had a problem. When they are puppies it's less a hassle with them being down within a week or so they will start feeling better. They the best dogs I ever owned and can't see myself owning any other breed. They are not meant for just any owner or lazy owners these dogs need attention, grooming and exercise or can get destructive/annoying. I consider German Shepherd active breeds and very territorial and vocal these dogs tend to bark a lot.

My grandmoms GSD was crazy but that was probably from how she was raised prior to my grandparents getting her. That bite is no joke, felt it down to the bone for the rest of the day. Had to remind her who the alpha is after she bit my mom and we had an understanding from that day on. I was the only one able to dog sit her for my grandparents when they went out of town lol R.I.P. I love my German shepherd she is totally my amazing best friend. I miss her can’t wait to get home to see her she misses me and runs to the door and is excited to see me regardless of time I get home. She keeps my wife busy. It is a full time job and they need lots of love if you can’t treat them like your own then you don’t deserve one. They are very energetic they need lots of play time. Long walks super smart animals. Now I feel like I’m part of the wolf pack. She talks to me. Tells me when my car is running Ruff ruff

Knock on wood..... none of the Females i have owned in the last 35 years have passed younger than 13. My oldest was just shy of 15. I have an 11yr old European line longcoat that has perfect teeth, has never limped, runs, chases the ball. Her weight is perfect....being overweight is a good way to shorten any dogs life. Her coat is in great shape. She does nap a little longer than she used to but otherwise her vet says she is in great health. She was spayed at 1 yr.... Her half sister is a year younger. She still has the energy of a 4-5 yr old however she has always thought she was a Mal.... she does have tooth wear because she is an aggressive chewer. She also has perfect body weight. She is will be 10 in a couple months. She was spayed at 6 years after she had 2 litters of pups. Mammary cancer is usually caused from having a female that hasn't been spayed but has never had pups. The longer they go, once they reach maturity at 2 years...the higher the risk. The same is true for males. I have been training and showing dogs for 48 yrs, 35 of them gsd's. I have never had a dog get a UTI, have any problems concerning their urinary system period.

The only reason I didn't enjoy having a GSD was because of hip displaysia. They shed a lot and they cost a lot but they are totally worth it. Males tend to be more active and goofy where females are a bit more reserved and certainly more protective. Either way they are totally worth every day.

4 months in, with a female GSD. Vet estimated Nayla was 9 months old when I got her. No background knowledge of her past, other than last owners had her for a couple weeks and gave up. Black and gold, and draws attention everywhere we go. Good around people, but aggressive to other dogs. All dogs. That is a hassle on our long walks. But what really stands out, is her ability to judge strangers. Mostly she wants to go over and meet new people, but occasionally I sense she is uncomfortable, starts to hunch down, ears and eyes locked on stranger, hair standing up. Annoyed to what she has done to sofa, and any cardboard box. But took it in stride, because she is so loving, loyal, and protective. I just couldn't let her go to a shelter. First month timid, head and ears down when being scolded. Now it's a blank stare, she rules the house.

If you work with a trainer to overcome her fear and mistrust of other dogs, she'll be more confident and make more friends. In three sessions, our trainer had figured out what was going on with the dog, how we were making it worse and how to fix the problem. Worth every penny.

Simple reasons that no one really borders. We have female shepherds and we feel they are preferable, as always. We never had problems such as infection, and they live longer than average males. Just need to give them what we eat, especially meat. No dry crap which with give to dogs. People have different views and preferences, and those are respected!

That is BS, I have a pair of german shepherds. Both dogs are intact. The female is 7 and the male is 4. My female GSD is so clean that it is very difficult to notice the beggining of the heat cycle if not for 1 or 2 drops of blood on the floor. The heat cycle does not even bother her at all. She has had puppies two times and it was such a joy to have them. In fact my male is the father of the second litter(she was 5 at the time and he was 2). I keep carefull tabs on her heat cycles and my family and I had discovered that for our pair, during the first week of her cycle we don't need to separate them as her hormones levels didn't bother our male. After that he does not have any contact with her until her heat is gone. We know our dogs and we know what to look for. We had prepared ourselfs for that second litter and even we had timed it with her april heat cycle so the pupps could be born in the summer. Having a female GSD is no more difficult to having a male and for someone to produce such a video shows that either he does not know the breed or has heard from somewhere that having a male dog is better than having a female in general. Females dogs aren't to different from males, infact my female had taken the role of the guard dog in the family instead of my male as he would greet anyone even strangers with licks and kisses, while she is the watcher and she has even managed to foil an attempted bulgrary, as few years ago we had a series of thefts in our neibourhoud and one night I saw a car that stopped infront of my house and stayed a long time with her engine running and her lights on, but my female sensed that something was wrong an her barking woke us and I could see from my bedroom window( that overlooks the street) the car departing. At the time it was only me and my mother at home as my father was out of the country on a business trip. Of it wasn't for my female there was a high chance that we could have been robbed. My male mainwhile had been asleep and it wasn't until we showed up to see what was wrong that he woke up.

I had GSD of both sexes and the the only issues I see here that are valid are those pertaining to being male vs. female, which has nothing to do with the breed. I see zero difference in ease of training or long term temperament. All GSD want to please their owners and are defensive of their people and property.
