I think I can understand where they are coming from though, they might not have been referring to pattern, if you think about it, and I am not sure if this is the case with cresties but with a lot of animals such as fire belly toads, the redness in them they get from carotenes so for example if you have a morph of crestie that is very orange or red and you feed it a diet with more carotene then it should flare the colour more. That is where I think they got confused.

My daughter and I were at petsmart buying mealworms and crickets for her Leo and my crestie. A worker proceeds to tell us that the mealworms will eat their way out of the lizards stomachs if our lizards are juveniles. It scared my daughter so much that she started squishing the mealworms heads before feeding (her Leo will eat any insect dead or alive), it to her Leo. I don't feed my crestie mealworms because seeing cresties only need to eat insects twice a week, I feed mine crickets because they are more nutritious than mealworms. My daughter mostly feeds her Leo crickets as well and occasionally feeds him mealworms because the exoskeleton can be hard for them to digest. Her Leo got impacted for a few days because he had a hard time digesting the exoskeleton. When he finally did pass it the mealworm was pretty much whole so he might just not of chewed his food enough. I think that you would more need to worry about mealsworms causing impaction than eating through your lizards stomach.

Leopard geckos are said to be crepuscular but I am with the train of thought that they are actually cathemeral/metaturnal because they are, in fact, awake sporadically throughout the middle of daytime and nighttime. I see it with mine too and he is in my room where it's quiet so he isn't being woken up. He just gets up during the day sometimes, walks around to check things out and then goes back to sleep. Compared to my crested geckos, true crepuscular animals, that becomes even more apparent because I really only see them get active towards the late evening into the night (not so much early mornings because I'm either asleep or don't have the time to peek in (no worries, they do get sprayed in the later morning hours simply for humidity, my room is oddly humid anyways which is a problem because I can't seem to get it under 70% if I can trust my gauges). Also, my geckos all love mealworms and their pupa. Of course the babies get tiny baby mealworms and if I can pick out freshly molted mealworms I do just because they are easier to eat by a little bit but they munch them just like everything else. Out of curiosity, the breeders you were talking about, I'm wondering if it's imperial and reptiles by mack since you said they supply petstores and those two both supply petsmart with reptiles among a few other smaller breeders depending on the locality of the petsmart. Not saying anything negative about them, I was just wondering.

Can you confirm or debunk if wax worms are not okay to feed because they can’t digest them? The only time I had this happen to me was when I fed one of my babies a wax worm and a few days later I found it halfway out of its rear end but not in poop form. Took it a few days to pass it, I was afraid it wouldn’t be able to and was told to just leave it and it’ll pass itself. I haven’t fed waxworks to any of my geckos ever since cause i was afraid it would happen again.

Ive read that you couldnt feed mealworms, not because they chew out the stomach but because they cannot properly digest the chitlin or the shell of the worms and can cause impaction.

  • @captainyarrr7855

Smaller lizards that eat and some how get down larger mealworms that can’t properly chew the worm can have a rust of the worm eating it’s way out. I had this happen with a young fence lizard not knowing that the worm didnt die. It did eat its way through and was horrible. So even then I still make sure if I hold have bigger meal/super worms for younger lizards I crush or take off the head the enough to not allow anything like this to happen. Not really common at all but more so a rarer mistake that can happen with new owners who don’t do research.

My crested gecko won't eat anything but crickets. I persistently tried to make him eat food. I bought every kind of food and made him wait till I was scared he'd gone to long without eating, then I'd try another food, etc, I am currently only feeding him crickets. I had no choice I do scoop his food down In the bag of crickets and gently mix it around and coat the crickets in it. I've done my research and I don't know what to do.

well, that about diet, i don't know man first i want to cover up that i was feeding my cresties like this for a 5 years because i was told to feed them like this. My cresties lived 4 years on a diet that was mainly made up of only crickets, and veeery few baby food, veery few mashed banana. Crickets were something like 85% of their diet. The fact they didn't have any problems is a more surprising when knowing that it shouldn't be like this. Maybe it's because of they've got a mix of vitamins and minerals on each feeding. Like the crickets were dipped in it. Then I learned that it shouldn 't e like that. Cresties already grown up, being 5 years old. So I bought them pangea. That grey one, i don 't know the name and fig one. I tried to gave them both. But they seemd so disgusted by it. After only a bit, and they wouldn 't want to touch it anymore. I even tried to not feed them because I reaaaally wanted to teach them to eat it. It didn 't work. They would rather eat dirt and leaves.

My created gecko refuses to eat anything other than live crickets. It absolutley will not eat anything else. Including the diet food made for them. The only way i can get him to eat the diet is if i smear it directly on his face. This tends to tick him off and he runs away and wipes it off on plants them licks the rest off. I left a bowl of meal worms in there one time until they turned into beatles. He would look at them and walk away.
