I agree that your crested gecko cant feel "affection" but they do have trust and they can have a bond

I came to say something similar. They don't feel affection but they feel safe ( I do not hold my geckos when I feed them), they love to be pet, I know because they move into the petting and stay still for it. I do one or two finger petting.

I really like this because I have difficulty trusting people and feeling safe around them. So when I can have that kind of connection with an animal, it may not be the same as love but it’s similar ❤️

I thought the same thing when watching that video. As some one with influence it is so important to explore and explain the context of what happens in the natural world, not just point something out and oversimplify it. Its like saying since seagulls walk into the ocean at low tide they should be kept in a fish tank. If that video had just been talking about the experiences of wild geckos it would have been fine, but it was careless to imply that geckos are good at such high temps, I am glad you clear that up Brian!

I had a conversation with the KZreadr you mentioned about his video. I feel he should have made the point about micro climates and what a Crested Gecko would do in the wild when temperatures get into the low 90s. Pre Covid I talked to him regularly and drank many a beer with him after Herp Society meetings. Controversy drives views and interactions.

I'm glad I found your channel. I had a trio of cresties years ago and the care has certainly evolved. I fed mine baby food and probably kept them too warm. They did thrive until the time I moved and my uncle brought them to my new place. I left them outside on the patio while I ran to the store thinking they would be okay in the shade until I got back. It was about 90 here in Texas and when I got back they were dead and I was devastated. Now about a week ago I got another trio in a new setup and have updated how I care for them based on all the new info out there. I definitely appreciate your videos like this to help me make sure I'm giving them the best care possible.

I agree with 1. Completely. Mine habitually jump back to me if I let anyone else handle them. However, it's a long leap to love. Could be he knows my smell, and knows it's safe. Could be he knows I feed him. Could be a lot of things. They even sometimes seem to want to come out, but that doesn't mean he wants me. Maybe he saw a fly, or knows the routine. Not enough data to jump on the love train.

Same. My boy has a habit of staring at me through the door because he knows I’ll let him out to explore my house plants (lizard-safe, but more arid climate plants than in his bioactive). They experience the world differently than we do, but they seem to share the same curiosity that other reptiles have, which is very enjoyable to watch and encourage.

I remember when I got my first crested gecko back in 2009, the pet store owner, who’s actually pretty cool guy, said that they couldn’t go without water for more than 8 hours Unfortunately, that gecko has passed away, due to user error, mainly because I was 9, and 2009 feels like it ages ago 😂. I’m now 20 and I have a 3yr old male I got for Christmas back in 2017 as hatching

I live in Oregon. Very few people have A.C. In the summer, I often put a sandwich bag full of water on the substrate, and the geckos frequently hang out on or under them. I only have a few, and they have a few fans just for them. But the sandwich bag, and sometimes putting them in a closet with fans facing out to keep the air circulating works well for them!

I just recently discovered your channel, I love your videos so far! I'm starting to get into breeding, ooking for a low/mid end female gecko to pair with my male harlequin. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg because I am just starting out and the customer base I'll have is the lower/mid class that wont be able to buy 300 dollar babies from me haha. Ive had nothing but bad experiences talking to my local breeders about a female, and about breeding in general. It really feels like most are just doing it for the money, rather than for the love of the animals and providing health animals to people. :( Although I don't want to be a high end breeder, I aspire to put as much love and passion into it as you do. You're fantastic to learn from!

  • @AltitudeExotics

Its because true green crested geckos don't exist. A few can have a very slightly greenish brown tint to them under certain light, though calling them green in person is a stretch. Most photos you see of apparently green crested geckos are just poor lighting/bad white balance in the photos.

After letting my crestie acclimate for 2 weeks to her new home I started handling her in the evening for 15-20 mins when I get her fresh food and water. Two nights a week I will tong feed her a calcium dusted cricket, which she gladly gulps up the second I put it in front of her face (I also will let a cricket go in her cage because she enjoys hunting the cricket at night when it's dark). Now she is very used to this routine and expects it. Instead of running to scurry and hide when I go to get her out of her cage she now gladly climbs onto my hand when I put it in front of her. I know she doesn't do this because she loves me, but rather because she's used to this routine and knows that she may get a cricket afterwards (I only feed her crickets twice a week, but I handle her every evening so she don't always get a cricket afterwards.

Yeah that gecko that he found on that 90° day was certainly not the obese gecko that I own. And there's really not much chance of a strong cross breeze through my vivarium. I kind of think that the KZreadr who posted that video did not intend to set that as a precedent but the problem is the viewer. Here's the thing: he's right to question our practices. We should all question our practices. People kept fish for how long now? And they live longer now than they did 30 years ago because knowledge grows. Learning about their habitat is part of that. We just need to recognize there are places we do better than nature. At our best, we are far more consistent than nature.

many reptiles and even fishes are able to change their sex based on the conditions (like all male salmon was killed and there is no male, some female will change their sex). This is the reason why some reptile species egg hatching sex ration can change due to temperature (is a condition also).

I cohab a crested with a whites tree frog in a vivarium. Large water bowl with a water fall kits to it constantly over flowing it. About 4 gallons worth of water in the viv with adding half gallon plus every week with plant consumption and evaporation. Have no issues. They don’t bother each other. Even watch them hunt crickets next to each other at times. I make them hunt for their food but keep a steady supply in the viv . Gecko still has his gecko food in 2 locations as well plus trying to start a dubia colony in the enclosure. They do good. A standing bowl of water I can see issues but proper set up they do fine. No aggression towards each other. Crested still has its tail. Both are active animals. No feeding issues. No signs is stress from either animal. Whites active croaks regularly as he always did and roams. Crested active hunting roaming the enclosure. No signs of being territorial between the two either. They are in a 18x18x36 tall paludarium exoterra tank stays at 80-81 degrees during the day around 75 at night. 40-50% humidity during the day spikes at night of 70-80%.

I would like to counteract the argument for keeping geckos with frogs. I've been keeping and breeding extremely rare salamanders, frogs, toads, etc. for years now so I know a thing or two. Most frogs lose that toxicity in captivity, also there are many frog species in New Caledonia. There are MANY species of frogs that could be safe to cohab though 99% of the frogs in the hobby wouldn't work and I wouldn't cohab unless you have at least one year of experience with amphibians and geckos. The issue is that frogs that appreciate higher humidity typically need more heat and the species that can live in cooler climates typically like drier climates, also you need a much bigger enclosure, I'd custom build a 3 foot cube tank (minimum) to cohab. And at that point, it would be more fun (in my opinion) to have a community of brown anoles, green anoles, cuban tree frogs, long-tailed grass lizards, gray's tree frogs, red eye tree frogs, etc. The bottom line is that it can be done but mostly likely shouldn't be done.

@@Battshimself My sister got a 4-5 month old one and i was scared he wasn’t eating, so i put some of the mixed up powder/water on the end of a straw and he starts licking it off. I do that until he seems full and turns away from the food just to make sure he eats (: I’m glad to hear he’s doing well!

I JUST CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE PEOPLE COHAB DIFFERENT SPECIES 💀💀 I just wish people would use their heads. I have a few questions! I was thinking of using 2% chlorhexedine for tank cleaning, but If I remember correctly it can leave mineral stains. What do you use for cleaning and for mineral stains? Also, how do you keep humidity regulated in the winter? I find it difficult to keep the room warm, and keep the humidity up. Thanks! :)

  • @AltitudeExotics

I use antibacterial dish soap for cleaning. It can be a challenge to keep the humidity up in the winter. Keeping a humid hide in the geckos cage can be a big help for this!

I have a weirdly social geko then, almost beardie level and I don’t think we give them enough credit. Sure it’s humanization to think they feel but some individuals are more curious and they all do have their own personality. From a breeder stance I’m sure it’s just breed lizards and sell, make sure their healthy blaaa. But there’s nothing wrong with thinking they can show affection or maybe they do like the dorky little lizards they are.
