7 Easy Blues Bass Line Formulas (The Blues Box)

👉 My full beginner bass course: yeah.bassbuzz.com/bluesbox
Take your beginner blues bass to the next level. The Blues Box gives you fail-proof notes for your bass lines. (as seen on TV!)
Grab the 7 Formulas Cheat Sheet: www.bassbuzz.com/go/blues-box
In my last beginner blues bass lesson I showed you how to survive a 12 bar blues using two simple shapes. You can check that out here if you missed it - • Beginner Blues Bass "S...
In this video I’ll show you how to take the shapes concept to the next level using The Blues Box to create tons of kickass blues bass lines.
The blues box is just 4 notes that form the shape of a box on your fretboard (hence the name). By changing the rhythm and order of notes, you can pull tons of bass lines that work great for blues and many other styles.
After I teach you how to play the Blues Box, we’ll put it in action with some killer real-life blues tunes, from Susan Tedeschi, Eric Clapton, Otis Redding, Junior Walker, Taj Mahal, and Gary Moore.
Then I’ll take you through a simple 4-step process you can use to come up with your own Blues Box bass lines on a 12 bar blues, plus some tips for applying them in context without making your bandleader furious.
Do you like things that don’t suck? Me too. Subscribe to BassBuzz to see some more of them - yeah.bassbuzz.com/subscribe

PRO TIP: You can also use The Blues Box to get tough stains out of gig clothes, for sweat... and other fluids. 💦 What’s your favorite way to use The Blues Box around the house?

I use the "Funk" box in the living room, so I can tell people to "get the funk out", the "Rock" box in the bathroom, so I can tell people "Don't bother knocking, I'm busy rocking", the "Jazz" box in the kitchen so I can tell people "How do you like that for fusion food?" and of course I save my "blues" box for the boudoir. So I can tell people "Don't be confused, we're messing the blues."

Josh, I have played piano for 50 years and graduated music college. I just fell in love with bass 2 years ago. Have become very proficient already and your lessons are such a helpful and breath of fresh air besides playing all my scales, chords, modes, etc. This lesson is very helpful for relaxing and jamming. I like how you show these bass lines in records and that you show the written music as well. Look forward to many more of your lessons...

This is golden information for beginners and I'm willing to bet quite a few have been playing for years and have never been taught this technique. If a person looks at the fretboard the way I do, it's a huge combination lock. We can open it up to a point but how much better is it when someone hands you a working combination and you learn where your root notes are Now you can play along with other instruments and backing tracks. You can learn song after song but until you can jam in the correct key your not on the way to being a bonafide , complete musician no matter the instrument. Great lesson👍

Nice! "Blues Box" was the name of a radioshow in the 70s in Germany. I am born 1958...and play bass and guitar...also double bass, but, that has retired, have none. The best way to play for me is: switch off the rationality...dare to play "wrong" notes...as bridges or somehow..just play! Make it "feel good"...You're on the right path.

Your vids are very helpful! I'm a blues fan and these 7 easy lines have helped me a lot. I still cannot do the triplets, but I'm working on it. ( I love the humor too) Muchas gracias Josh!

Totally great ! Excellent easy to follow bass line education. Interesting why the flat 7th sounds good, but it does.

Thank you for these videos. Your teaching style is so simple for a noob like me to follow. I learned more in five minutes with you than the teacher I had for 2 months.

Did you check out Joshs online course "From beginner to badass"? Last week I did the last lesson and what should I say? It was awesome! Worth every single $ I'm not a total bass badass because I didn't completed some lessons for example "Higher and higher by Jackie Wilson" but I'm more bass badass now as I was for 6 months. 😬🤘🏼 Next week I'll meet up with some guys for my first jam session / bass audition! Thanks to Joshs course!

Hey Josh, another great video. Keep them coming. I am stuck at home for 14 days because I was out of country and have lots of time to practice. I got your Beginner to Badass learning series a few years ago and then also tried Jamplay and Scotts Bass Lessons. Gotta say that I've learned much more from your videos than from the other two websites combined. The graphics, humour and fun nature keep the interest level up. p.s a video on inversions would be great if you get a chance - or have one already

Josh is the DJ Khalid of videos: ANOTHER ONE!! Keep it up man, great stuff! 10 years of classical piano means my theory is on point but I’m currently dabbling in blues bass, jazz piano and rock drums (pandemic time-filling) and video’s like yours reeeally help me fill in my many blanks. Awesome work, much appreciated.

LOVE your videos! SUPER helpful to a beginner like me - also funny! When Picard was screaming in Klingon I shot whiskey out of my nose... the fact that it's 7am on a workday is a whole 'nother story... Keep it up & thanks!
