Need to get a grasp on the basics of blues bass lines before you tackle these turnarounds and walk ups?
Check out my other video - Blues Bass Lines: 6 Authentic Formulas That Work Every Time:
• Blues Bass Lines: 6 Au...
If you play for long enough, someone at some point is going to want to play a blues with you.
It could be at a jam session, an open mic, at a real-world gig, or maybe just playing with your buddies on the weekend.
Wouldn't it be great if you had a whole bag of tricks you could pull from that could take your bass lines to the next level?
If you've checked out my earlier blues bass lines lesson, you'll already have everything you need to play authentic blues bass lines, but in this lesson, you'll learn how to go beyond those and make your bass lines more fun, more interesting and carry more impact.
These turnarounds and walk ups are part of the language of the blues. You'll find them all over tons of recordings and you'll hear them if you ever check out any live blues gigs.
You've got a ton of different options, and you don't have to use all the ideas all the time. Just pick your moments and keep your ears open.
Of course, if you want the tabs, notation and practice tracks from this lesson, be sure to visit the site to download them for free:
becomeabassist.com/blues-bass...
Just fill out the form on that page and you'll be sent all the different turnaround and walk up ideas in PDF form, plus you can download the backing tracks that I used in this lesson.
As always, if you have any questions, make sure to leave a comment, and if you haven't already, make sure you subscribe to the channel so you're always the first to get new videos.

Sounds great.
Bonjour de France, so clear....and efficient....congratulations !
Nice lesson Luke. Great practical approach and very effective.
thanks dude l l use these when i need them
Great stuff here, Luke ! I already used some of this stuff with the guitar, ( I love banging around on various blues/boogie riffs in open E) and they've transitioned over to bass pretty seamlessly for me, but this video showed me a couple new angles ! (and I can actually wrap my head around them without having a seizure , unlike so much else I''m trying to absorb,LOL !) As always, A+++!!
The idiots that disliked this video, evidently dislike blues music. And Rock, because this is the basics for rock licks also. Keep up the good work. We appreciate what you do here.

I'm glad you appreciate it @Robert Pickett - and I don't worry about the dislikes. Show something to enough people and you're bound to find some that aren't into it and that's fine. I'm more focused on people like you who ARE interested, so thanks for watching.

If you ask me - the reason you get dislikes (and yeah they are best ignored anyway) is because this is covering basics - but isn't that the point? Building blocks - whn I first learned bass I just had to learn this stuff by listening to other players and think "what was that little turn they played there??".... now we have YT it makes life a lot easier...... I say ignore them and keep up the good work!
thanks Luke Really enjoy your lessons...I appreciate how you are teaching us to think about bassline creation...Good job!

Bahaha! Noice!
Hello Luke! Great lesson here, unlike other Bass Guitar Channels that just offer near worthless "fluff". That "fluff" others offer, I don't see much practicality. Here what you've presented could easily be applied PRACTICALLY for applying this you've presented to playing the walking Bass Guitarist lines in Johnny Rivers' "High on A Mountain of Love", and other such walking bass lines from the hit songs of the 60s & 70s. Offering "Practicality" ... such as "how can I use this lesson to apply to playing Pop, Rock, Soul, Country Songs that the audience can easily recognize? ... is valuable! Wonder if you'd consider talking about how the Bass Guitarist's work can prove to be very complimentary in a band that already has a Keyboard Synthesizer Player who is using Bass Synthesizer octaves sequences going on in a song. Example, for instance, if you watch the earliest KZread videos of Steve Winwood's Band live concert where the band is playing ("Valerie" Yokohama Area see KZread), I see a 5-string Bass Player in the band. What is he playing exactly? Because I hear a synchronized Bass Octave Synthesizer also in the mix. Notice that in Steve Winwood's later live performances of "Valerie on KZread", there's an absence of a Bass Guitarist. Mind discussing this topic? Thanks. I play a 5-String Bass Guitar.
The tricks in this, literally me playing the blues...
Great lessons,thank you,,yeah?...
Cool
Thanks for the great class, it's very useful, greetings master!
Thank you. As a pro also, this gives me the inspiration to go back and organize my buildup in a song. I always believe in starting simple and building from there. Just taking your basic example and this one, almost completely solves that strategy.

Good lesson Luke. It would be helpful for me, working to get my speed up, to know what the tempo is. Then I could work up using a metronome. Anyway, thanks! :-)

Hey John - no worries. The tempo in this one is 108BPM.

I had a go at estimating the tempo - your 12 bars seems to take about 26 seconds - so I get 110 bpm. Is that about right?

Sir luke does every chord uses flat 7 in blues

Like every chord progression
@BecomeABassist

Good question @Draaaka Diaz. Most of the time, yes - the chords will all be 'dominant' 7 chords (major chord with a flat 7). Not every single blues will be like this, but that's usually a good place to start from.

I always think it looks like a banana as well
Be careful adding that turnaround shown first! Some songs have one, some don't. Don't just go applying it without asking. If you're holding the 'shape' of the song down, hinting to the listeners as to what the chords is at the time (it's what bass do!), while say the guitar player is off in LaLaLeadLand, you've just changed the chord progression of the song. For a jam, it should be specified or you end up going two different directions on the last bar. So see if there's either a quick change on the second bar, a turnaround on the last, or both, or neither, and you'll do just fine. That doesn't mean you can't do any of the other things shown here to make it interesting. Just don't think you can do whatever you want and won't end up changing the song structure.
