Beginner Funk Bass Made Simple (Bootsy’s Funk Formula)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

👉 My full beginner bass course: yeah.bassbuzz.com/bootsy
You can be a total beginner, know no theory, and still use this formula to kill it with beginner funk bass and beyond.
Play-along track with no bass: / bootsys-funk-formula-p...
Bootsy Collins is the legendary bass player who played with James Brown, and then Parliament-Funkadelic and Bootsy’s Rubber Band. His “funk formula” came from his experience working with James Brown and learning about “the one”, which he developed further with his later project.
In this video I’ve broken down the formula to work even for beginner funk bass, so that you don’t have to guess if you’re doing it right or not. I’ll talk about what “on the one” actually means, how Bootsy defines it and how we can use it to sound funkier.
I’ll also show you a cool fretboard shape called the Funk Box, which will give you quick access to some notes that will sound funky on almost anythang.
If you want more foolproof bass lessons to make sure you’re keepin’ it funky, subscribe here - yeah.bassbuzz.com/subscribe

Worked at a motel in the mid 90s, took a smoke break out back and a dude hit me up for a smoke, turned out he was Bootsy's tour bus driver. He took me on a little tour of the bus, totally funked out inside, looked like a disco club from the 70s. Way cool.

@@BassBuzz Hey, thanks for the reply! I was lucky enough, thankfully. My uncle is a great musician, played in everything from funk to punk bands. I think I was maybe 15ish, a teenager nonetheless, and he told me about the 'Bootsy Rule'. He taught me that no matter what I was doing with my sloppy attempt at bass fills, as long as I could bring it back to the root-note, all is well.

I've been sharing the Bootsy video and doing play-alongs with my students for years, but this adds so much more to the lesson. Really nicely presented and concise, too. Barely an "um" in 15 minutes. Truly well done, and it shows you THE key to holding the funk pocket. Seriously, this is a perfect piece of instruction, that leaves the young player with a solid tool in their box they can use forever in the first 2 minutes. Right on! Gotta say your teaching style is on the mark - get em' groovin' first and having fun then sneak in the theory until they get curious about that of which you speak. "You keep saying One-Four-Five. What does the mean?" - "Funny you should ask!" Gonna follow your lessons as if I am a 14-year-old newb. Love this lesson, gonna be three-and-four-and -UGHing all day.

I know theory like the back of my hand. These videos are so refreshing because it allows me to return to the most important thing about music: how it sounds. From a 'how to enjoy making music' standpoint, this video is awesome, even though my theory mind wants to pull it apart. You've helped me really enjoy picking up bass and learning how to groove. Thanks very much for that.

You're welcome! Glad you're integrating the theory with the actual sound of music (like, not the Julie Andrews musical). Theory should help us actual make better music / appreciate music more, or it's not doing its job!

Hey man, ... a min ago I was listening to "soul power". I'm so madly glad I found you. I'm playing the bass for about 20 years. In one video you're talking about "not to murder it" by too much pressure on the frets. Oh!!!! No!!! How I murdered my bass for years! What horror for me and my poor instrument...! You saved me! There is no word in no language on this planet that could express what that did to me. I'm so happy and motivated and inspired by your videos that I'm finally playing again every day as much as time permits. You and your videos are unique and lively, positive and so funny, I think I would love to watch them too, even if I had no idea of what you 're talking about. But I have! So I feel like the luckiest one, nothing can break me... or my basses' neck.. You're teaching as if there was no evil, no option to fail, and : you make me laugh and when you leave I still have to smile for a while... 💣💥😁 Music is more than music... 👉🎵... Let the good times roll... 🎢🎱🎣🎠🧿🎵... 👈

Thank you for providing standard notation for this lesson. I grew up w/standard notation on all the instruments that I play. Standard notation communicates SO MUCH more info about music (notes, rhythm, dynamics phrasing). It’s incredibly powerful, if we’ll make an investment in the time to learn.

Amazing the way you teach. You show the pentagram with the notes, and for someone that doesn’t have the theory you teach in an easy way. So people are able to play even if they don’t know the theory, and can learn the theory at the same time.
