'62 Volvo Amazon With a Corvette Heart
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Ahh yes, the age-old classic tale of picking up a car to "restore", only to end up with a project that's slowly spiraled out of control. Shant Yazijian from Bells and Vaughn picked up this forgotten Volvo Amazon 122s with the best intentions of keeping and rebuilding the motor that was in it... but you know damn well how that goes.

I sit like larry does in my stock seat Amazon and I'm 6'2 and fat 😂 roomiest car I been in head and leg roomwise, they have decent adjustment stock , up and down by switching bolt patterns on the rails and same going more forward and backwards
Love this thing. The hodgepodge parts just look like they all belong together. Nice work
Love what Shant have done with the Amazon! They are a rare sight even in Sweden these days but when you do see them you fall in love with them all over again, great looking cars.

Thats how Volvos should be done and look. Ohhh I remember when ive seen project like this in Germany in early 2000', same model. Looked amazing. This volvo model got some style.

Dear Mr. Yazijian, super cool car - well done!! Amazing. Thanks for sharing.
You really put that old swedish car back to life in a beautiful way. I would love to see you do the same thing to a volvo p1800. That amazon is a beauty but if that would have been a p1800...man that would be insanely cool🙂🤘🏻🤘🏻
Nice! had many 122s Volvos, everyone with B18 engines at around 120 HP drove and handled like a properly thought out well engineered good looking car. So awesome to see those cars handle that kind of power. Nice to see younger folks discovering them, they are all over the world. Thanks for showing that. Amazing build.😃
Without the soul of an old Volvo a heart can never beaten.
I had three of these when I was younger living in Denmark, and the dream was definitely putting a V8 engine in like this, but too many laws against it though, so we ran the stock engines B18 / B20 with dual carbs. Congrats on the project, looks freaking awesome!
I love this car . It’s not the typical hot rods you see all the time . And that colour totally suits this car .
This made me so happy, i have a 1964 Amazon and i love that car so much. The Amazon in particular is such an underrated car, because even if it's an old design it's still had some (for the time) very modern features that makes it easy to make it drive really well today with minimal customizing.
We've had Volvos for decades. Always older rigs. Have had a '64 122S for several years, and it's one of the most fun cars, Volvo or not, we've owned. Did a bunch of updates, but all the mechanicals are stock or enhanced stock and it's a blast! 122s are very cool. Love what Shant's done!
Old Volvo guy here. IPD still lists parts for this car. In particular they have urethane bushings and upgraded sway bars. Back in the day, 1970, I had a PV 544 with parts from 1960 through 1964. Later on we had a new purchased 1982 240 GT Turbo wagon in black with tan leather seats and four speed with overdrive. Wish I still had it. Typed this before he mentioned IPD.
I have always loved Volvos. My favorite car I have ever owned was a deep blue Volvo 240 wagon with a standard 4 cylinder and 4 speed. When I got it in had 160,000 miles on it and I drove it till it hit 310,000. At that point it was finally was leaking oil and tired. I got a motor from a 740 turbo that I modified and put in. I stiffened up the suspension, dropped it and added some 17 inch wheels from a modern Volvo. I let a friend borrow it and it met a tree doing more damage than what could be safely fixed.
Larry knows where every sweet ride is apparently 😂

122s classic style that will never get old.
Sweet ride reminds me of Doc from Cars! Love the understated swoop lines down the side and the modern stance of the wheels, the custom steel bumpers, front grille, rear wing... All custom worked in ... It all just looks right.
This is everything you could ask for in a car. Fantastic job!
Wow this is probably the best Volvo that I've ever seen build up and I'm a really big fan of that body man. It reminds me of like am old Desoto or something. Super awesome build.

JUST BEAUTIFUL WITH SOUL
I have always loved these Volvos as well as the Rover P5s. You joke a little about feeling the spirit, but you obviously have a little help here from the beyond. This is just a beautiful, unique vehicle that I hope remains in this world for many many years to come. Thanks so much Hoonigan for bringing this to us, and thank you Shant for sharing your gifts with the world.
SOLD I will send my address for shipping 😁
People used to swap those small buick v8s into these in sweden in the 70s. The automatic gear box used by volvo was made by land rover for their v8 which was yet again based on the buick v8s. My relative had one with a v8 back in the 70s and my dad, uncle and aunt all had an amazon as their first car. I have a torque wrench that has swapped many b20 head gaskets during it's lifetime. Absolutely love these cars and would love to be able to own one one day.
Wow a Amazon it’s amazing 🤩

I've always loved this body design and have thought about a complete engine and electrical overhaul/swap - but not using a Corvette engine. Amazing. Looks great and sits with a perfect stance.

I love amazons and i never seen a lip like that on the trunk its brilliant and looks realty good . Well. Done
Amazed to see some one into ooold volvos like this, and this is my dream car project, but a '67 sedan. Just love how this car looks, so classy, but so retro-race car.
I don't know about the 120S but the 123GT had a built in rollcage. If you felt the roof it was about 4" thick. It had front and rear sway bars, also, I believe they're called ladder bars. On either side of the rear end, near the wheels, they ran forward to the frame. It had a posi track, chrome piston rings. To make it simple, it had the exact same drive train as the P1800. Forgot to mention, overdrive that you engaged by a switch on the steering column. Dual SU carbs, double brake lines. Not 100% sure but pretty sure it had the drum-discs on the rear wheel. Discs for driving and drums for parking. Speaking of which, the park brake lever was located between the drivers seat and door. Ergo you could engage it and keep your right hand on the wheel. I'm sure I'm missing many features. Bought it for $500 around 1982. Drove it for about 2 years and sold it. Advertised it at $500. Dude shows up, looks at all four sides and says, "I'll take it." He didn't even test drive it. That's when one realizes ya sold it way to cheap. The thing handle like a gokart. I really regret selling it but the cost to restore it was way too much for me at the time. At that time I could get an airfilter for my 318 Fury on sale for about $1.49 where as the pair of filters for the 123GT was $35! In Victoria BC, the wreckers had a deal where for certain makes, they wouldn't bid against eachother when ICBC (the government run insurance company) auctioned off the written off cars. Not only that, I don't recall the exact rules, but on ICBC claims, the body shop was supposed to use used parts of possible. Hence the used parts were about 60-80% of new and with Volvo, that's still pricy. I recall I once need a phony spoked hubcap for my 80s Newyorker. Called the dealer and it was a hair over $300. So I called a wrecker and he wanted $125. I replied, "that's not too bad considering what a new one's worth." The wrecker thanks me. Tells most people flip out and call him names I won't text and hangup only to call back sheepishly. He commended me for checking it out before calling him. Once again I've ventured way off topic. Sorry about that. A bad habit I must try to rectify.

I should add, on my 123GT it had a badge that said "Volvo Canadian" If the meant it was only available up here in the great white north, I don't know. It was an excellent snow car. I once saw a sand truck give up on a hill and back down. I thought what the hell, bogged it in 2nd gear all the way up no problem. Was once told that's why the car was so popular for rally type racing and hence hard to find in a reasonable condition. Really wish I could of kept it. Couldn't afford to restore or hell, even just store it at that time
Man, i just love seeing old Volvos in America. This man really did a beautiful job on it. Love it!
Lovely build, grew up in one of these Amazons. My dad had the stock B18A type 1 - 1,8 L 68 HP 4 cylinder cast iron block.Model name was 121, it was a 4 door basic version.the 122 was a sportier one, and there was even a 123 S version with dual stromberg or SU carb setup and around 103 HP. love Your build, greetings from Sweden :D
Car is stanced perfectly.
I really enjoy your auto vlogs. This one is very cool. thanks for showing this special work.
I'm glad you still have the unique speedometer. In Sweden, in the 70s and 80s, it was common to put a Rover V8 in the Amazons.
Dude built an GORGEOUS car.
Your back and shoulders gotta be sore carrying Hoonigan with content Larry, love this car and great feature 🤟
good memories. back in the 60s my aunt had one she bought in Europe. She came to stay at Christmas , we went out to visit relatives at the farm while me and my sisters sat in the back.
Amazing car. Love builds that take an obscure car and turn it into a sleeper like this one.

Supernice VolVette 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😊
Every car on the planet deserves a Corvette engine!
Cool project and great car. :D These cars were common when I was a child. It probably had the B16 engine (75 HP) and 3 speed transmission. Later models had B18 engines and some of these had double carborator (115 HP) I think the police in both Sweden and Denmark used Volvos and Volvos also functioned as ambulances. The B18 is legend. Word is they are impossible to kill.
I really dig this car. Well done Shant.
I’ve always loved how Larry can portray dreams that have become reality, only to inspire new dreams and new builds. This is my favorite car you’ve ever featured... there’s a 142 covered in snow somewhere around here. Great build, love the work and thanks for the dreams!
My first car was a brand new from the dealer 1967 Volvo Amazon 4 cylinder 4 speed (In Peru, South America) They used these Amazons cars for racing and also the 544s and they did pretty good. In Peru they had races every year called "6 horas peruanas" because they raced for 6 hours none stop. Oh memories...
This car is insane! He's a genius got to give it to him! Great work!👍
This video made me happy but also tearfully sad. Back in 2001 a crock of a person named Jakob Herzog was supposed to do an LS swap to my 1963 Volvo 122S. I had purchased many goodies that would go into the car: custom-spec’d Tremec TR-3550 TKO transmission, Simpson five-point harnesses, Kirkey racing seats/mounts, just to name a few. I’d already installed all the IPD goodies (delrin and urethane bushings, Bilsteins, and the lowered street coil springs), and had a local (Mountain View, CA) shop fabricate a custom adjustable four-link rear end setup (but a Mark Williams 9" rear end was going to be ordered/purchased eventually). Fast-forward to 2002 he comes out of the blue and asks ME (WTF??? 🤔) for fabrication blueprints to do the modifications (this was after the car sat in his hands for ONE YEAR and all he f’in did to it was cut out the trans tunnel and firewall and also the rear trunk area for a custom fuel cell which I had already spec’d). Bascially I got raped by Jakob Herzog, promiser of dreams he was unable to fulfill.
I can’t stop watching this. What a beauty!
got one 4 door from my father 14 years ago stock; with manual 4 speed the stick is close to the steering wheel and has one big sofa in front and one rear. . its the 63 model and hope one day i clean its rust and roll it not much rust . just making myself more responsible with cars and then dive into the special ones
Awesome Volvo, this guys got a great eye. I had an 84 240 wagon factory Buick diesel. Loved that car. Volvo and Buick must have had something going on. My 66 Volkswagen bug had headlight covers like that.
What an awesome build.....touching so many parts of "car culture"!!! Also the camera van is gangster.
AMAZING ,A CREDIT TO YOU , AND HOW THE BITS AND PIECES COME TOGETHER , LOOKS AS IF YOU GREW IT FROM SEED .
I have '69 122s B18 as my fist cheap used car , 🧡it ! strong robust engine & body, moved on & good deal on a 144 fuel inject got, just sold 144 carb' moved on But still got it ,just needs TLC on body
My first car was a baby blue Amazon 122s that had rust holes in the floor and the original white vinyl seats. My second car was an EK Civic. Amazingly, despite feeling like a tank, the Volvo weighed less than the Civic. Can't imagine what 450hp would be like in one though; mine had 120hp at best, and was practically always sideways. Also, the car in the video is likely a 123GT (122s would be a four-door). Thanks for sharing it
Just freaking amazing. Love those old Volvo, we had one in the village but not with such a sweet power plant!
Very very impressive and healthy organic SCARY, even to a well schooled driver. Much joy watching this. Thx dude. Ps with just a touch of yellow, Sweden all over it.
It's a grasshopper on wheels. I think you broke his heart when you told him there was another Amazon that's fitted to a Corvette chassis. What can you say about improving perfection? Ditch the rear deck spoiler? Hammer the roof a quarter of an inch? Replace the turned-metal sheet with carpeting? Light-blue tinted glass? Change the gear-shift knob? Nah, it's good as it is! 😊
That car is absolutely beautiful
beautiful
Stock horsepower was about 75 at 4500 rpm. Really cool build!
@ around 18mins he mentions "old school feel",, that's the right moniker to describe the simple, clean beauty of this hotrod. The door panels,, saweeet! Nothing overdone, everything clean,, it's 'Super Sano',, just plain Nice. [edit] after watching the drive,, that engine/trans sounds so sweet. We would suppose one day he'll go with all around disks since he mentioned it stops BUT,, I was thinking it may need an overdrive - sounds like it's winding around 3k at 55 or 60 but then he mentioned it has a 273 rear gear, does 70 in 1st, 90 or so in 2nd, 120+ in 3rd so an OD isn't needed. We wondered about the van,, thought maybe they were videoing for you but guess not,, just another who appreciated that cool car.

Thanks dude, much appreciated. It cruises pretty well. It does 80 mph at around 3100 rpm with 24" tires. Eventually I'll put a 5 speed in it and 3.42s out back. But it drives so nice, so I'm not in a huge rush. The van belongs to a friend of mine. They shot that the same day and you should see a vid up soon.
What a beauty!
A good friend of mine around 1996 had one of these that he had swapped with a 13b rotary and I loved that car. RX7s were huge back then but ain’t nobody got that kind of money to really rebuild these cars every couple weekends 😝 I’m more into LS’s these days 😉
