    Never were made for much else, the sole reason people think that Tanks are something else was NATO fascism slaughter third world countries and when the main weaponry of your victim are old asssault rifles with at best a few 100m range, than a tank is godlike. Against a real army, a tank becomes a joke alone by its extremely limited firing range in comparison to all other units. In that case the main goal is to be send against the enemy and take as many hits as possible, while the other system analyse the attacker for their strikes.

    They do actually do a good job against FPV drones tbf. They also fare badly against anything like a tank shell or artillery, because all of this armour makes you slow, it covers your sensors giving you less visibility, and you’re a bigger, taller target. Also artillery doesn’t care how many shed roofs you strap to yourself, you’re still just as dead. So these tanks can exploit the fact that Ukraine has a lot of drones, and not a lot of artillery, and they do it well. The solution is we need to restock them with more artillery and tanks, so these things can go back on the scrap heap.

    it was just an extreme modification choice against an extreme situation (drones are everywhere, artillery is few), which comes with massive trade-offs (taller profile, bad visibility & as much gun traverse as a ww2 casemate tank destroyer/assault gun) a striking comparison would be ukrainian tanks that have to face against a more widespread russian artillery, they dont have this kind of extreme modification if ukraine were to be stocked with more artillery shells, these turtle tanks would die out and the remaining russian tanks would simply adapt into new forms

    I mean they don’t “work” in that sense but they do work strategically In no way ; are they impervious of even that hard to destroy You can one hundred percent take them out but according to numerous ukranian sources , it went from 1-2 drones to 6-8 Thre way the Russians seem to be using them ks they’ll send them in first or alone They fuck about and do what damage they can , clear a rout supoort infsntry And Ukraine then either has to just lead them to do there thing; and take the consequences and deal with it without drones Or; it does take it out but then it’s used up a good chunk of the drones it has on hand and easily deployed In which case Russia can then exploit that momentary weakness by Russian uo more conventionally outfield vehicles and make an attack during the period where Ukraine has less to no drone support

    One thing I don't understand is that it's said that these tanks are used to lead a column to clear mines and protect itself against drones, in exchange for limited combat capabilities. But even if the lead tank is protected, what is stopping the drones from attacking the following tanks that don't have this makeshift armor on them? I know you mentioned the jammers, but sounded like they weren't particularly effective. If the tanks that are actually dangerous is taken out, then what good does the turtle tank do alone? also, unrelated question, but can anyone tell me why it seems like there is no kind of air combat in this war? I can't recall ever seeing any videos or jets, helicopters or even conventional UCAV's for that matter, maybe only one or two early in the war.

  • @ivanstepanovic1327

    @ivanstepanovic1327

    23 күн бұрын

    Well, the first tank in the column is usually the one that takes the most enemy fire. So, once this thing (that attracts a lot of attention anyway) shows up, everything is pointed in its direction. Also, it is very likely that it is not the only vehicle with jammers; some others in the column behind it are likely to have it, too. No air combat... Well, who? Ukrainians are in deep you-know-what any time they take off. Ground and or radars mean they have very little chance of not being detected. Then, you have all sorts of air defense, different ranges. From long range (S-300/400) through medium (Buk) to short (Tor) and so on. Going through all that is suicide. Then add Russian long range air-to-air missiles (MiG-31 with R-37M for instance)... They stand no chance. So they relied on low level flying and sudden attacks, but still paid the price. On the other hand, Russians didn't achieve full air superiority thanks to Ukrainian air defense, occasionally strenghtened with Patriot. And one more thing - doctrine. Their air power is there to support ground operations. So they use glide bombs, making it needless to even enter Ukrainian defense...

    The idea is that trailing tanks are protected by ewar on the turtle tank. So that all works brilliantly against threats that can be neutralised by that ewar. It's useless against everything else. Turtle tanks don't help against artillery, for example, or against following vehicles driving over mines, or anti-tank rockets. They are an artifact of a weird period where virtually all Russian losses were due to drones. Against a mixed threat, they're a liability.

    Yeah, it's a thing that often happens in engineering contest: you design things to compete versus a certain problem, completely forgetting there are another threats and needs. Like in this case: it can withstand 2 drones instead of 0, but completely useless against: tanks, atgms, automatic cannons, mines; cannot shoot, can drive mostly straight, cannot see anything and does so mediocrily.

    The turtle tanks weld metal sheets or siding above the tank leaving only a narrow open front. The goal of this shed like structure is to stop an FPV drone from making a direct strike on the engine, tracks or turret that would disable the tank or in some cases cause a chain reaction with the tanks own ammunition.

    It's rather obvious to anyone who understands how and explosive shape charge with a molten copper projectile works. In just a few inches of air that molten copper will cool enough to not penetrate the next layer of armor. You get that cheap charge too detonate outside of the actual tank and 6 or 12 in man there's no penetrating power anymore. Oh am I saying too much again

    Wild guess to heavy and cumbersone to put on back in the Factory plus it probably makes the maintenance clock spin like a kid whit a credit card and no limit. so you first ship the tank as close to the front where you need it. put the armour on (this takes time) hope the front line workshop does not get spotted and blown up by artillery (high chance) especially if you do the mistake of putting more then 1 tank there. Drive the armour to the battle and join the next offensive. also hope that the engineer that supposed to put the armour on did not pocket all the wielder gas and left before you got there or the logistic officer or stockpile chief. so you might get the tank the the workshop and go okey put the Turtle cage armour on and then nothing happen. because the engineer is not there, the tools to wield are not there, the cage itself is not there. a new engine to pull that darn thing for longer then 5 min is not there.

    The point of the turtle tanks was that while Mike Johnson was refusing to allow a vote on aid for Ukraine, Ukraine was running extremely low on artillery shells and had to rely on drones to take out tanks The shells for the Czech Shell Initiative should start arriving next month and aid for the U.S. is flowing again The turtle tanks will be less effective now that they are getting hit by artillery instead of just small drones

    You sound so smug, but in 99% of cases you would just be blatantly wrong and you will be wrong the moment Ukrainian or Russia is in a different position to fight the war. For example, why did the Americans put cement, logs, etc. on the Sherman armor? Not because it was the little bit, that would stop the German anti tank guns. But because the crew felt safer doing so. Same with cope cages pre drone warfare. Rpg-7 doesn't care about some 5mil metal rods, it can punish through 900 mil steel. Same with most if not all anti tank weapons. A javelin doesn't care about no cope cage.

Doesn't matter about the "99% of cases", all that matters is this case, this reality. You fight the war you are in, not the hypothetic war of tomorrow or yesterday. Javelins have been surprisingly unreliable in this war, they seem to be mostly saved for taking shots at helicopters, and NLAWs saved for the tanks.
