6 Signs You’re Burnt Out, Not Lazy

There’s actually a lot of overlap between laziness and burnout that can make it difficult to differentiate between the two. Burnout is defined as “a negative state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive stress and an inability to cope with it.” To educate ourselves and better understand the nature of burnout, especially when we ourselves are at risk, here are a few tell-tale signs that what you’re experiencing right now isn’t actually laziness, but burnout.

This video really spoke to me. Before my burnout I was extremely motivated. I had just started a new relationship with my current partner and it was going amazing. I was also fully recovered from my eating disorder and my depression and self harm tendencies were going away. I was meditating every morning, frequently journaling, making my bed everyday, eating well and doing things that made me happy. I was finally cleaning my room and taking care of myself and even my parents noticed the drastic change. All of a sudden I started feeling so tired and demotivated. I stopped meditating and journaling, my room started piling up with dirty dishes and my clothes are everywhere in my bedroom floor atm. Im not cooking for myself anymore and just let my body starve cause I’m too tired to get up and cook. I’m crying everyday for reasons I don’t even understand, and I just feel so annoyed and numb. My exams were going on at the time that I was really motivated and I think that led to me stressing a lot, so now I’m here. I really hope I can crawl myself out of this pit again like I did before. I hope I find the motivation to take care of myself again.

Same here, I did go to my doctor and told her all the stress I was having. I’m starting therapie next month, and just going there, and feeling some understanding, did already really help. because when you’re at that point of no going back, everything just feels like a huge task, even showering, or brushing my teeth. Life just, hit us sometimes. Don’t let it get to the point of no turning back. Ask help

I feel the same but it happened to me after quitting a very stressful job in the same day my ex broke up with me and I'm living abroad far from my family and friends, it's has been now 4 months I'm still crying everyday, overthinking about my family how I push and I work harder to support them while I'm still only 24 yo and I have this responsibility to send money to my family, I'm feeling overwhelmed and sad. I used to be that brilliant person full of positive energy happy motivated and all people around me feel inspired, but now I'm so down , I hope I can over all that. Oh dear, I hope today will be brighter than yesterday! Try to change smaller things like getting up, making yourself some good breakfast, etc. Treat yourself with small steps first and validate your feelings. Im not a therapist or anything near to it, though, but i myself (i mean yesterday) has been sleeping for hours (from afternoon 4+ till) and getting up just now (6am), feeling clueless on why I'm like this. I try so hard to finally get up and put on the lights and get myself an easy breakfast (bread). But of course, I'm not feeling entirely ok now. So yeah, small steps and small targets🚶‍♀️. Try it!

I've hit burnout definitely. 1. Studied in my spare time for the field I want to work in. (During work break, days off, and on holiday) 2. Gained a job in my chosen field, only to find its incredibly toxic. Boss was horrible and often shouted at employee's (myself included) 3. Left job due to my mental health. 4. Desperately looked for another job, and gained employment with another firm. 5. Lost a very good friend from a fatal heart attack. His daughter sobbed. Absolutely broke me. Everyone loved him. 6. Got overwhelmed at my new job. Massive breakdown and depression. Keep getting episode of complete panic. Can't stop worrying about everything. Got beyond desperate to get away from this feeling. Thanks to my friends, got the help I needed. Getting therapy soon. Fingers crossed.

You just described my life in a 5-minute video. Right now I am at the stage where I don't care about my health anymore, even though it is getting worse and worse every day. I lie to myself that I try to do something, but I don't. When I make a phone call to a hospital, I hope that they won't answer or there will not be an option to schedule any visit. I do these calls so my parents don't bother me about it anymore. It probably is selfish, but pushing myself to do anything actually beneficial for myself is too hard and I can't tell why. Moving on, I absolutely feel that detachment from the world. It is hard to describe, but when I am talking to someone, it feels like all of this isn't real. It all feels like a dream, where you just watch your "body" doing things. It is scary especially when you have a job interview or anything that corresponds to you directly, because you don't feel the connection with your emotions, your wisdom, your intelligence. You just feel like you are watching the body talking, yet you have a slight idea that you control it and that makes you even more scared. About lacking motivation... yes, absolutely. I've recently lost my job, where I was a game developer and from the moment I left company's building, I felt like this is the end. If there is a day when I am somewhat happy, the moment I open a game engine and try to do something, it ends almost immediately. Something inside me tells me that it's not gonna work and I totally lose any interest in doing it, even though being a game developer was a dream of mine since I was a kid and working in that company was the best experience in my whole life. And yes, I am irritated very often. I used to be a very chill guy, but as the life continued, I got more and more anxious, I lost contact with most of my colleagues, all of my gfs cheated on me, I got a lot of arguments with my family, and thus I got very shy, as well as scared of myself. I am scared that I'm gonna hurt someone, even though I never did and I couldn't do it, because I hate violence. I tried to go to a psychiatrist, but he gave me two medications and called it a day. And they didn't help me at all. I felt even more hopeless. Honestly, I thought burnout was only reffered to the feeling of getting tired of the things that you do often. I didn't realize it was this connected to all the others feelings I have each day. I honestly don't know whether this video made me happier or sadder, considering I am not alone in that matter. Thank you for this video regardless.

We are never alone. Even when we dont believe in things greater than ourselves. Im 49. I used to be a lead singer in a band. I have owned a dog grooming business for the last 8 yrs. Im in the stages of my body breaking. Up until this very moment, I couldn't put a finger on the center of the black hole that I thought was my soul. Recently feeling I was some kinda horrible person, when previously I felt like I lived my whole life being a good person (known for being a good person). Realizing that it's not just me and it's not just you... means WE, ALL OF US/WE....ARE NOT ALONE. The feelings we feel are real. It's been taboo, and the greatest trick ever played on us... to think we are separate from anything or anyone. The connection is what we are missing. That pent-up thing we have inside us is LOVE. LOVE we are unable to share with people, their situations, and their positions in life. Heres why I say it's LOVE we have inside. Fear turns to anger that turns into hate. Love turns fear into faith that turns everything back into love. I am not a religious person, but I know if we treat the person next to us badly, it creates an ugly cycle. So the opposite is also True. Know my friend you are not alone. I Love you 😍

Find new hobbies. Music, Art, Photography, or anything that you feel deep inside you are connected to. Step by step and you will gain your interest of what's around you hopefully. Try to do 1 new thing at least everyday. And once you feel comfortable enough, try to meet new people and hang out with your friends. I really wish you get through this and i believe in you. I usually never comment on vids like this, but this honestly explains a lot about how I've felt, especially with my art. Through 2016 to early 2022 I was super motivated and passionate with drawing, and while I've had moments where I'll do a decent amount afterwards, there is a lot of space in between with me not even touching my sketchbook. I'm still dealing with the burnout so hopefully I'll get myself motivated to draw more consistently again

Honestly, burn out has never crossed my mind when I started my final year of degree. I always thought "Why are you so lazy and unmotivated?! You were never like this before!". I simply brushed it off and got irritated, it made me more mad when all the things I enjoyed before no longer give me a spark of happiness. My mood was all over the place and there are days I feel like crying but I physically can't. Taking breaks was sacrilegious; all I could think is the outcome. I just wish I listened to my body cues more, maybe if I did I won't feel like this. I hope everyone experiencing this gets better (as I hope I would too), I couldn't stress this more but please GET SOME REST AND DON'T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT. IT IS OKAY TO TAKE A BREAK. Take care.

No exception or care will be provided by others esp. school or workplace. It’s a cruel world and it also shows why mental health problems are so devastating. There are always blames on the victims.

The "losing interest and motivation in things you used to love" hit me like a rock. This just makes me realize how fast you can get into this black hole. My 2 year relationship endet and I pushed my interests I loved so much to a limit where I just feel empty and don't feel like doing them no more. I work with one of my passions and I slowly gain my motivation back. It's a hard way and it also shows how easy it is to just burn out. Take care of yourself everyone. You're worth it, don't work yourself over your limits. ❤️

damn... i personally lose interest and passion for a lot of things may it be my fav song that i used to listen every day or my hobbies such as editing meme videos or working out. I always felt that i was being lazy and being burnt out didn't ring the bells. I always thought that this happened probably because I'm used to CHANGES. (Growing up we used to move a lot, this affected my social relationships with people, my personal development and ect. since i adapting these things when i was little.) Through those changes i was able to adapt more quickly to new things and just lose interest to the things i love. And today is one of those days. Thanks for hearing me out random internet person! I feel like the most tiring thing is the fact you feel *horrid* for laying around, for not always be working and running around for everyone’s praise and approval, even yours. You get upset with yourself, you resent yourself for being unable to get up and work, how tired you constantly feel despite how bad you feel the need to work. Sometimes it feels like there’s no worth to you if you don’t work hard and have get noticed for it, you existing wouldn’t be near enough for you, and you get sick of being burnt out, but that whole thought process is burning you out even further and you don’t know how to stop it. (Personally, another reason I’ve been stressing is because we’ll be starting physical school very soon, something that I’m personally not ready for, ive been finding myself just wasting away this month just stressing it instead of enjoying it, and I hate that I don’t have enough faith in myself to pull through school this year)

I know how that feels: you’re tired and a part of you wants to take a break. But that other part is so loud and is telling yourself to push through and to get things done. When you do take a break, you feel awful, almost like you don’t deserve this break because you’re not doing anything. If you think of taking a break as a necessary part of working in order to work at full capability, it may not feel as guilt-wrenching. What has worked for me is taking more and more breaks. The more you do something, the easier (or less anxious-filled) it gets. You got this~

Luckily my parents understand this and are there to calm me down during my breakdowns. This video helped me to stop blaming myself and understand the difference.

I feel so lazy this last year or two and I am so hard on myself. After watching this video I fit everything that is described and deep down I knew it all along. I do not feel like myself anymore. I was a driven person with goals, worked out almost every day, got up at 530am and swam 1-2 miles. I was always a high achiever top of my classes in school. Have run business that others in the same industry never could make it. I currently run a family operation that my grandfather started. I am now 42 and in the last 4 years we have been wiped out by hurricanes, then dealt with covid lockdowns and losses, and now the inflation nightmare. I have gained 50lbs and my personal care has gone to shi*T. I struggle everyday to go to work or just get out of bed but, my work is suffering because, I do not have the energy to do my job properly and feel guilty for any personal time I manage to muster the energy to take. The main person my Aunt who always helped run the business with me passed away 2.5 years ago so it is all on my shoulders now with the 30+ employees who depend on me for their living. I am not in a position to stop but, if I do not do something I am going to break. I recently started with panic attacks that I never had in my life. I recognize all that was said in this video and that I need to get out of the hole I am in but, despite past trials and tribulations this time I seem unable to pull myself out.

sadly, since I've heard this so many times, I've learned to ignore it. But sometimes it's just too much and it hurts you know? I literally failed one class during one quarter and my mom acted like I was a disappointment, a failure, and no longer needed. I try my best in school, since it's hs. I'm slow at doing homework, I just can't keep up. after that happened, my mom acted like I never existed for like 3-6 days and constantly saying to my younger brother, "you're my only hope, don't be like him." like it just hurts to hear someone say that, especially when I'm doing my best.

My life isn't as hard as that of my parents but somehow it is much more stressfull and exausting. Moreover, my social life is infected by technology. It's suprisingly hard to go and meet a friend and relax with simple conversation which was normal way of keeping mental health few decades ago. I think technology is definitely a primary cause in more ways than one. Like social media, social pressures, etc, all of things we already know about. But also now you have to compete to keep up so parents and schools I think just don't understand the insane amount of pressure. As technology advances they try to advance kids faster. But it is never a gradual introduction little by little, more and more they just add things. Even before covid and the shut downs hit kids were already becoming pretty isolated. Computers are both an incredible, helpful blessing and a dangerous, toxic curse.

You could ease yourself back into by trying some no-pressure drawing. A couple ways I do this are by using a buddha board to paint with water and it dries so fast without a trace and I know that so I can't hold pressure over the outcome. Another way is to draw with pen on cheap paper. You can't erase it to fix it, so let the mistakes happen. It's on bad paper (napkin, notebook, sticky note) so you're not going to do anything special with this drawing, so just play around with forms and techniques without pressure.

I walked until my legs hurt, and then walked back to my house. I’m still not sure how to get out of it, but I’ve been exercising 5 days a week. It gives me something to build upon. Sometimes I get suicidal thoughts and I have to yell inside my brain that I like being alive. But I don’t have the answers. I don’t know how other people cope, I just try to focus on the positive. I’m grateful to have roof over my head when so many people are homeless. I feel grateful to have food in my belly when so many people are starving. I feel grateful that I have downtime to relax, when so many people have to slave away just to keep the lights on. The next day, sit up straight on your bed. The next day, walk around your room for one minute. The next day, step outside your house and feel the air. I became less tired and i feel more motivated. Thanks for spreading awareness about burnout. I really apreciate it.
