550. Using EPOXY to make worktops look like granite - PART ONE
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
After much deliberating I’m going to try to make my worktops look like quality shiny granite which I’ve never done and never seen done on a boat before

Mate I’m stoked to see the sink finally. Looks great. Looking forward to the install. Thanks for the fireworks. Leave the edge of the sink showing, it looks amazing.

I love it - glad it warms your heart
Its 23:15pm and I was just aboout to close down. Up pops a Young James KZread post and,,,,,,,,,,,,,Oh Dear that means I need to pop to the kitchen and pour another "VERY LARGE" one. Such is Life 😂😂😂
My vote is having the sink top on show. The one where the sink is under the wood, the wood will eventually become wet, and hold germs.
Put the sink rim on the top. Even with resin, don't give the water a chance to get at the plywood. It *WILL* find a way to get through.

James. The sink has to be drop-in mounted. If you set it flush or under-mount, water will get into the seam around the sink. Wood & water do not mix. Dropping in the countertop opening allows also for you to use a gasket alongside a silicone sealant. This has the dual benefits of a thermal break between the steel and the wood and also vibration. The galley is really coming together nicely keep up the good work!

He wants to set it flush with the top layer, which is epoxy, already sealing in the wood.

@@weerwolfproductions I’m aware. The water will flow down between the sink rim and the countertop and just sit there. Not just water but soap suds and grease and anything else that comes in contact with the rim of the sink. That will lead to a buildup of serious muck around the rim of the sink. The best way to do it is to hang it from the countertop from above with proper plumbers putty and gasket if available.
The boat is coming on James. I'm liking the curves and lines of the kitchen. Cant wait to see part 2.

Thanks Glenn
Its going to be a stunning galley, James. I'm really interested in seeing how your epoxy works out! The curves really add to your look. All the best from Missouri.
The first cut is the deepest, James. I like the way this is going. I've seen some very impressive worktops here on KZread, but it's tricky to get right, apparently. Good luck. 👍
Looks good James. Only thing I can see is that with a square bottom sink, you might find it doesn't fully empty depending on how the boat is laying in the water. You may end up with some sink water staying in the sink instead of going down the plug hole? I'm sure it will look amazing though, sloe certainly does 👌🍺
Excellent on the work tops. A little extra thought goes a long way. I think the galley is going to be striking, black and stainless.
Well done James carnt wait to see the finish on work tops hope Carol and yr family arewell tc the oldies 🌟🤗👍🤗👍
Looking really good now James really well done
Have the sink sat on top of the worktop James save yourself a world of pain. Water ingress, dirt trap, etc. 👍🏼

Roger that !!
You are so industrious! I can’t wait for more episodes!!!
I'd resin seal the underneath of the ply just to be sure when you are talking worktops, water and boats. I know resin not cheap but peace of mind and all that. One coat should do - it will soak into the ply - it could even be polyester and not epoxy.
Make your peace with it and drop it in. Get a good gasket and sealant so water can never get to the wood.
Looking good James-- I'm looking forward to seeing everything come together. Love the new saw!!

Me too - me too - thanks
THAT is looking bloody smart, James, careful you don't get to doing this as a job! Travelling boat outfitter/designer! I would think if you put the sink under the worktop you're going to have a dirt trap under the resulting lip? Glad you went with that, I think you made the right choice for the reason aforementioned.
Under mount sinks create mold and cleaning issue's. Looks great!

They're an all round bad idea, especially in a wooden worktop.

Yes top mounted is best--no gross gunk lurking underneath. Handsome sink!
The galley is starting to look really nice, even before you've put the resin on the counter tops. Not sure if you've had the thought patern, but, you could route out were the lip of the sink fits to still have the full lip showing but have it flush with the work top. Just an idea like 😉
Great job. I'm looking forward to seeing the end result
Great progress. Looking good.
Love the sink! Great job Matthew!

Here here
looking excellent ! im watching and enjoying your process of working out what you want and how to do it.( hoping to be on a fixer upper myself later in the year )
👍👌❤️🇨🇦,sweet stuff
That's looking quite nice. Well done.
Have the sink surround and the wood worktop flush.
17:24 on top jimmy more easily to clean
So much easier to make those straight cuts with a track saw, isn't it? Do you have any flush trim bits for your router? That way you don't have to worry about cutting two layers perfectly to match, just use one as a template.
good work on the channel thanks lee
Looking great.
If I heard correctly (likely not), that you'll have lighting under the worktop edges so light washes down the cabinet faces, but are you also planning to place lighting under the gunnels and/or toe kicks? ;-) I'm still a bit curious how you'll access the dishwasher soap dispenser tray? Oh, you just indicated, you'll have a splash board behind the sink so I'm guessing you'll also have one on the other worktop so there will be no lighting under the gunnels, assuming you don't come up with an ingenious alternative (you've done so before)?
💜💙💚
Great work ! 😊
Are you going to have room for the faucet between the sink and splash back?
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt

Nope - will have to go to the side of the sink
