Oil on the deck looks beautiful! And the sliding hatch now built on our wooden sailing boat (EP 51)

In this episode we hit some exciting milestones. Iefke finishes all the little details on the cabin top deck and is then finally able to oil the timber. The result is beautiful and rewarding. Matt also reaches a milestone when He glues down the planks on the top of the sliding hatch. This final step now completes the main companionway. The hatch top has a finger joint construction using plywood strips into the Celerytop Pine rebate. All that is left is some details for Iefke to finish and off course the finishing touches of varnish, that last step will have to wait as this episode is also filled with the joys of our shed and it's animals.

It took me a long time to find you as well. Not sure why because I’m scanning for vintage boat building and sailing all the time. Now that I’m here, I find your videos an absolute joy. The rustic setting, your fine craftsmanship and quiet commentary (even the chickens) meld together into an inviting soul-satisfying world which we are privileged to feel a part of while watching. Thank you both for your beautiful work. You are doing something truly great. Best wishes 🇨🇦

This took me back to working on my dad’s 42’ ketch, using “Deks”… only downside we discovered, using oil on Teak anyway, was that the oiled deck got darker due to UV and hot to the feet. In the end, we let it all go silver.

Thank you again for taking us along on another trip. The cabin top looks beautiful now it is oiled. As does the hatch. By the way, Matt, you call your solution with the wood strips a poor man’s dowel, but it is actually a centuries old way of joining planks. Especially in cabinetry. In Dutch, the strip of wood is called a ‘veer’, and it is meant to do exactly what you are doing. It provides the same strength as a tongue and groove joint would, but leaves the ends of the planks ‘clean’.

At 70 and being a 'wood guy' all my life (also studied Finishers like Georges Frank and others) may I interject? The 1st coat - all important - is going in two directions: into the thirsty grain and evaporating out into the air. The life of the finish is extended by getting a good foothold, so flood the 1st coat and then, with a drier brush, pick up the excess. A thin 1st coat dries/gels before it gets very deep.

Loose tongues (AKA floating tongues) have been in use for centuries prior to the arrival of biscuits (although obviously not using ply)....so not "poor man's" anything. I'm not familiar with your cabin top timber, but it was much improved aesthetically with the addition of the oil, and looks great now. Oh, and I know it's counter-intuitive, but sanding across the grain first with a belt sander gets stuff fairer quicker, and you then just follow up along the grain.

What design is the boat based on? Have I missed that episode? Would love to know who the designer was and why you chose the design that you have.

11:50 "Poor mans Biscuit Joiner" - Nah. Its a clever mans waterproof reinforcing technique. Not a place I would use dowels or biscuits, as it has to keep a lot of weather out. PS - Whats your favourite brand of coffee ? I was thinking of a boat-warming gift when I drop in and annoy you one day when I am going past.

Your content is awesome and motivating, thank you for yet another of your vids! I wish you soooo many more subscribers, I guess they just haven't found you (yet)!! Maybe consider a brief cooperation with another sailboat-build-channel to achieve some cross-pollination, I'm sure that many, many other's would enjoy your content just like I do!..

Super mooi hoe de cabin top eruit springt met de olie. De zwarte naden maken het helemaal af. Komt het deck er ook zo uit te zien?
